Default McClendon to go 4 wide?

Thoughts on seeing Edwards, Samuel, Shi and OrTre on the field at the same time?

Would put defenders in a pick your poison kind of situation.

That's assuming if Bentley is given enough time to get a pass off.

Our OTs weren't an issue last year. They held up very nicely. We had some serious predictability issues that hampered everyone from Bentley to skill players to OL but our OTs did quite well. I expect the interior OL to be improved with Bailey shifting back inside so my guess is he'll get time. There's no such thing as a dominant OL anymore but I think this one will be above average.

I think this could work at times. We have an abundance of talent at receiver and I also think that Jacob August could be moved out as I think this guy is a very good tight end and blocker. Deebo, Bryan E. and both of the Smith Boys on the field at the same time would have to give a D/C a migraine that would last all game long. I also believe that Jake Bentley would have to unload the ball in a hurry as teams would load up on us to get a quick sack before a receiver could make his break. I still like this idea and hope we use it a lot this upcoming season.

i think youll definitely see it often, how often depends, but in theory youve got your 4 best playmakers out there and the defense will have to go nickel and spread out to match up. my question is the same for any set we use, do we run effectively out of it and are we willing to run jake out of it often enough to keep the defense honest.

It's really no different than what we've been running, just instead of a tightend with Hurst going out for passes you just move them off the line (although he lined up off the line on multiple occasions). I mean KC although listed as a TE spent more time off the line of scrimmage than he ever has on it.

I'm also very impressed with the game planning of Bmac. All of his interviews it really sounds like he's going to have a much better Offense with a common sense approach to things. Instead of having a system and making the players run it. He's going to adjust the system and plays to what's on the field at any given time.

4 Wide? Sounds like a Veer and Shoot formation that Baylor, Houston and some other run.

I think UCF does it now too.

The goal is to create at least 1 mis-match where you have a large OLB trying to cover a WR AND you'll usually have 1 WR going Post to pull the Safety. To defend it, you have to have great OLB athletes in a 3-4 or 4-2-5. This type of offense, if run at least pretty well, destroys 4-3 schemes.

This is also an offense that is hard to just throw in every once and a while (say...15% of the game.) If you want to be successful with it, you have to practice the route changes/configurations a lot and everybody has to be on the same page...especially for the timed passes it needs. Those teams who do this offense well do the Veer and Shoot the majority of the game and practices.

Also, you're taking away the TE, so your OL has to be ready to step up against DL, most of the time they'll be one-on-one blocking. The HB also has to be able to recognize the blitz/additional rush, then decide if they'll take the option, and then if need be work to the flat to get a 'save the play' dump off pass.

This is not really an offense that you can just throw in over the summer. If they aren't fully committed to it, and just want some looks, they probably should just learn a 2-3 of the Veer and Shoot base positionings and then practice 3-5 route tree combos per configuration every practice. Also, it's harder to run this offense in a hurry up during loud away games if the sideline is radio'ing in the calls...they're usually pretty long verbal play calls. Some teams who run this will use the visual ques, but the problem with that is you have to almost change them every game...or change the reference point for the start of the call every quarter. Good DC's and their snipers can pick up on visual ques/cards that were popular at the beginning of this decade.

Although, this offense really is the most exciting in college football. If we have the personnel and commitment to running it, I would be all for it. I wanted Briles as our OC 6 months ago.

It would be nice to have depth to keep the offense clicking and not missing a beat when you sub personnel off.

I think our Oline coach feels that is exactly what will happen. If it does we can go 4 wide with no problem.

With questions at TE...I could see it.

OrTre could fill the spot in the 4-wide Hurst filled when he split out.
The big question is can our 5 hogs block, or will a TE who is strong at blocking (Markaway/August) need to be put in for time...if so, the 4-wide formation won't happen much.

What are you talking about? The Veer offense is an old triple option offense that was run back in the 70's. Nobody runs that anymore.
