Default Re: Red shirt rule changed...can play up to 4 games

This is the best rule change in a long time.

First, the players who redshirt will have to be engaged. I'm sure there were some who, once redshirted, dialed it in during the season. Now, week six and doing well, why not give them a shot? Injury gets you to the third string and there's a redshirt freshman who may just be ready, throw him in and see what happens.

Bentley gets a sprain and whoever the 2nd guy is sucks it up, throw in Helinski for a week or two.

Find out the two deep isn't as good as you thought? Toss in the freshman without worrying about burning the redshirt.

From the fans POV, there's not going to be that missing year or what if. The WR who breaks out in the next year, where was he last year? The big name recruit who had the vets ahead of him, let's see what he can do in a real game.

Does this apply to transfers or just new freshmen?

it would apply to anyone eligible for a redshirt...which don't necessarily have to be taken during a players freshman year.

Nothing I have seen indicates that there has been any change to any other aspect of eligibility (i.e. transfers being able to play). Transfers using a redshirt during their year where they aren't eligible (assuming they still have one) has just been a way to keep them from losing a year of eligibility.
