Default Projecting the starting defensive line

Kinlaw
Thomas
Sterling
Wonnum

https://www.thestate.com/sports/coll...214375359.html

Kinlaw is listed at 302, Thomas at 265, Sterling at 240 and Wonnum at 258.

I trust Muschamp so this is just an observation. (assuming this projection is correct) This DL looks a little small. Sterling is going to be up against tackles 5 inches taller and 80 pounds heavier.

I'm glad to see Blackshear listed in the first 2.

As with last year, we'll be running a lot of different sets so expect to see Kobe Smith (6'2" / 295) plenty at tackle. I'm still hopeful that MJ Webb cranks it up this year after a full year in the program, and the playing time is there for the taking for Jabari Ellis (and Rick Sandidge, but that's going to be a tall order off the bat). I'll be curious as to what Sterling and Brad Johnson actually weigh in at this fall. And, is this finally the Year of the Blackshear? I hope so!

I will say Thomas plays big for his size. I was really surprised at how well he handled himself last year. When he came in I really just thought he was going to be a pass rusher, but he showed that he could play the fun as well.

The defensive line rotated a lot last year, and I expect the same this year. Muschamp is big on keeping DL from getting exhausted and realizes how much the grind in the trenches can beat down a DT or DE. I think our depth will allow a lot of in and out with the front seven this year.
As far as the weight of the likely starting front seven, Thomas and Sterling are the places with the dropoff, and both have shown their ability against the run and have very promising pass-rush ability. I think TRob/Thompson may be able to throw a lot of looks against opponents this season. Getting off blocks might be more important than holding/pushing the LOS. With today's mobile quarterbacks, quickness on the front can disrupt and contain much better than heft. Given the speed many powerful running backs have these days, you've got to catch them to stop them, and good tackling technique is more valuable there than weight and size.

Since this is a projection and not official I am not going to put much stock in it. Blackshear at end would give us better size and we do have some big guys who can play. So I guess we can go with speed and quickness or brute strength when needed.

Have heard some good things about Jabari Ellis at DT and he's a big dude.

I said it earlier in the year and I will say it again. With Fennels speed, they could put him just about anywhere near the line of scrimmage. I see him playing some DE on occasion for sure.

Sounds like Kinlaw will change his number from #99 to #3 per Wes Mitchell on Twitter.

Probably lost so much weight and toned up so much over the last year that he wanted to go single digits.

Coach Robinson said in his presser too that were a little smaller on the line this year, that he has to remember to run more stunts and things to make best use of their speed. Not as big as last year, but definately faster. I’m not sure how that bodes against teams that like to run the ball down your throat (UGA, Florida, Mizzou at times can, KENTUCKY) but hopefully linebackers can fill gaps and the line can stay within the scheme. It worries me a little bit because we’ve seen how its hurt our defense in the past. Being small on the d-line never seemed to hurt Mizzou during their eastern division runs though.

Offense may make some strides this year, while the defense may fall behind a little from last year. Which always seems to be the case with our team. The defense seemed to maybe overachieve some last year and forced a lot of turnovers/tightened up in the red zone. Hoping for that again and hoping I’m wrong about the defense maybe taking a step back this year.

the thing with thomas is he played plenty inside last year too, it wasnt excusively rabbits package either. i think he'll be fine starting full time at dt, the question is do we have enough talented depth behind him and kinlaw.

also the heights/weights on gamecocksonline have been updated with fall practice on the way. keir thomas is now listed at 6'2 276.

Actually USC just updated the weights today so that starting DL you've got is slightly different.

Kinlaw 305 Thomas 276 Sterling 245 and Wonnum 258. So a bit bigger. With Blackshear at 270, Enagbare at 285, Webb at 288, B Johnson at 250, and so on. We've got plenty of size plus we're adding Sandidge and Barkley as well.

Enagbare at 285 is crazy. That dude has tons of of potential. Not sure if he should stay around 270 to be a DE, or go big to be a DT.

If they have good weight, they are big enough, and they have the time to add a few more lbs. before the season starts.

Kinlaw would have been able to play the play the line by himself if he had not lost weight, but he is a much more effective player now that he has dropped the pudge.

And don't forget about Kobe Smith and Jabari Ellis, who have size and experience. We will be quick, athletic, and deep, with enough bodies to rotate players to keep them fresh. I like the line.
