Default New developmental league could mark shift for college football, NFL

Not sure if anyone noticed this, but if they get it up and running, it will be direct competition to CFB and recruiting.
Once a player signs with this league (if it happens), they lose all NCAA eligibility.
Quote:
The plan: Four teams based in Southern California, each playing an eight-game schedule on Sundays during the sports dead zone of July and August. Roughly 50 players per team making an average salary and benefits package of $50,000 a year, which they’d be free to supplement with endorsements. Rules tweaked to enhance safety and give NFL scouts matchups they want to see. Coaches with NFL experience, who would teach pro-style schemes in an immersive environment unbound by rules regarding classroom time. Any player four years or fewer removed from high school would be eligible, including college underclassmen who’d entered the NFL draft.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out. It's so much different than the NBA-D because there isn't another option.

Let's take Clowney for example. So much hype coming out of high school that in the right circles he was already a name. Why come to USC over this league? He'd get paid, get NFL type training, and be free to make more money with endorsements. However, he would also run the risk of being completely forgotten about nationally for 3 years.

I can see this being a draw for some players, but still not a major threat at this point.

If they really want to douse it with gasoline, they should add in copious female "escorts" and make weed legal (and provided) for "medicinal" purposes.

They'll be making 50,000 per year and driving distance to Las Vegas...they'll be fine.

Don't think you understand the Cost of living in Southern California, you have to have a 6 figure income to live comfortably. Even If they get a job during the rest of the year it will be tough to pull it off. With a 10.50 dollar an hour job, IIRC that is the minimum wage in California, they would be at 71k if they can work full time during the year. The few players who get endorsements might be living comfortably, but the ones who don't have any, it will be a waste of time. This league is probably aiming to get most of the 5 star players, in a way this could be interesting because it would even the field out in college a lot.

The only way this league survives long enough to become a factor is if the wallet(s) behind it are willing to take a big loss initially and not turn a profit for a while in my opinion.

For non-qualifiers and those already in college who become ineligible this league would make sense, but at least initially it would be a HUGE risk for anyone else. They are gonna need to find some recognizable names to keep people interested in watching the games (plus to be able to attract a quality TV deal)...and I'm not sure $50,000 is gonna be enough to get kids away from major college programs, especially when you consider that this is located in southern California.

If it is me and I am really trying to make this thing work I am throwing money (at least 6 figures) at the top freshman/sophomores in college football and the top recruits because you are going to need draft results quickly to convince kids that your league isn't just another joke league that falls apart after a couple years. After you get the league established then you can bring the salaries down.

I thought they were going to start that this year as they were too late to secure stadium leases or something like that last year.

They probably folded or maybe rolled it into this new thing.

I like this idea. Let the kids skip college and have their choice of what to do. However, the college kids better not complain about money, since they had a choice or weren't considered good enough to be selected.

However, I see this league ending in a train wreck when guys go in it and then bust, are poor and have no college degree.

I could see this as a place for guys that get flushed out of college for whatever reason (like Garcia) for for underclassmen that declare for the draft but don't make the cut.

Yeah I mean the main question is how is this league going to make money? People watch college football because they like the school, not because the athletes are so great. The coaching and facilities in this league won't be as good as most major colleges, so there won't be much incentive for athletes to choose it over school. The college education, meal plan, housing, etc that you receive as an athlete in college is worth more than 50k.

i think if they get some good coaches like chip kelly or gruden, it will attract good players and people will pull for home town players.

No way they are getting Chip Kelly. They are trying to make this pro-style under center O's and D's. Basically they are taking away all the things that make college football enjoyable to create a 4 team minor league for guys.

I don't see that happening. If Chip Kelly or Gruden or anyone of that status wants to coach they could have way better opportunities besides this league.

I don't think any College or NFL coaches would be able to do this if they wanted to because of Summer Workouts and recruiting (college) and such.

Basically their coaches will be the leftovers of guys that couldn't get a job in the NFL or NCAA or probably even CFL.

If the players get 50K what will the HC get 100K? Where are the coaches coming from HS, JC?
