Default Looking ahead: what needs to change?

For me, recruiting. The general consensus seems to be that Frank relies too heavily on project players. They are great as an adjunct to game-ready players, but hard to build success with a roster full of them.

Frank simply has to up his recruitig game, if that’s possible. Maybe it’s not for USC. Nevertheless, I don’t give him a free pass like others do. He gets paid a pretty penny to do this thing. It’s not like he’s doing charity work. Do we really want to believe the hopes for this season depended entirely on Felder? Really? He’s decent, but not THAT good.

In the 6 seasons he’s been here, name the players Frank has recruited they have developed into legitimate DI starters...meaning they would be starting anywhere. Dozier doesn’t count, since he was a gimme.

We need more horses. Bowen should help and next season is essentially Bowen or bust.

Recruiting has to get a lot better. In my opinion we had the least talented roster in the SEC this past year.

He doesn't need AAU superstars. He needs to sign more kids that can contribute in their first year instead of sitting on the bench. He needs guards that can shoot AND play defense (hint: they are out there and they don't all go to blue bloods). There should be a lot of concern about the recruiting efforts right now and I hope he can get it straightened out or the bottom will fall out in the next 2 years. The conference isn't falling off anytime soon especially if Ole Miss and Georgia make really good hires.

I agree that we need better players, especially at the guard positions. But I don't think having players that "would be starting anywhere" is realistic, or should be the goal. There are lots of good teams that don't have starters who would be starting anywhere.

Frank had the winningest two consecutive years in USC history. He coached the first USC team that made the Final Four. That shows that he is a good coach and is being successful. In my opinion, Frank is the best coach at USC since McGuire. Recruiting is a crap shoot. And that's true today more than ever. Frank is looking for good players that fit his system. I guess it could be argued that is the wrong approach, but it has been successful for Frank.

Who will be on the team next season is still to be determined. There will probably be transfers out and more players signed this spring. Every season is different. Every team in the SEC will be different next year too. We have had four consecutive winning seasons, and I expect next year to be the fifth. Frank wants to win and he knows he gets paid to win.

Yep, doesnít seem like weíve taken advantage of the final four run, on the recruiting trail.

Frank's style, not just the yelling, but the defense first focus along with boring offensive style really limits the type of recruit that we can recruit.

Essentially, we have the Paul Johnson of basketball as our head coach, and that limits appeal and narrows our recruiting pool.

Not true because Tony Bennett, Mick Cronin, and Bob Huggins all preach defense first. They are also not loading up with 5 stars. What they have that Frank doesn't is guards that can put the ball in the basket.

I have no doubt that Frank can find and develop bigs but his guard recruiting especially lately is extremely suspect. Almost every one we sign is a "good athlete with a developing shot" which basically means they are athletic but can't shoot.

Our offensive style isn't boring. Did you watch us in the NCAAT last season? Did you watch us when we beat Auburn? Frank likes to play fast on offense. But you can't do that on every possession and get good shots.

Does the system need to change then? Iím old school and miss the days of seeing great defense. Those Knicks/Heat/Pacers battles innthr 90s were epic. But the NBA wrote off defense long ago. It just is what it is and it trickles down. If you canít find players to play your system, then I think the system has to change.

I know there isnít much you can do about getting passed over for Duke, but getting spurned by Zion was a real kick in the nuts. It just seemed to set up so nicely with us making a Final Four run the season before he committed. What seems to suck the most is that he never even considered us. But, beating a dead horse.

Both; Frank is very demanding and few top ranked players want to play for a tough coach. Our biggest shortcoming is in facilities. We should have built a top notch practice facility instead of cobbling together something out of the Coliseum.

Talent is definitely needed but honestly the most important thing we need is guys that will last 3-4 years. Adding 8 people who never wore a Gamecock jersey before this season was a huge disadvantage, especially with no established leadership left on the team.

Not true? WTF are you on about CT? To say that our recruiting pool isn't limited because of Frank's coaching style is a case of wearing garnet glasses. You are smarter than that.

If you are a guard why the hell would you come here to run this tight as a tick offense then get yelled at everytime you miss a shot. Then get yelled at if the guy you are guarding scores? Guards are jazz musicians and Frank teaches marching band.

Frank's system works as we witnessed in our tournament run last season but he struggles to find the pieces to keep the engine humming. I don't think anyone is screaming that he should be signing 5 stars on the regular but he has got to start bringing in better players and especially players that do SOMETHING in their freshman season.

Since his first class, every recruit that has left the program has pretty much done zilch their first season here. Our best players during the same time frame were contributors even if it was small (5 ppg, 3 rpg, etc etc).

Zion was a Duke fan. Its almost impossible to recruit a kid when he is also offered by his "dream school". Same thing with the Felton kid. He grew up dreaming of going to UNC. They offered him, and he was not going to turn that down. The only thing I regret is that our coaches wasted a lot of time recruiting guys they were never going to get.
