If we are going to bunt you are exactly right in picking the time and place to do it. As much as I hate the sac bunt I would not argue against using the bunt in those settings.

Mark does his homework and I think we will be pleased with most of his decisions. During his pre season presser he was asked if he would ask Tanner for advice. Not to tick Tanner or anyone else off Mark let it be known he will be the man making the decisions. He said he would only ask Tanner some things about this area's recruiting or things of that nature. Chad often said he talked to Tanner most days and tried to get good tips from him. IMO Chad was not ready for a head coaching job. IMO Mark is his own man and well qualified to be our head coach. Great to have him here and it will be great when he has a full recruiting cycle.

Times have changed in baseball over the last 20-30 years. If you canít hit the ball, you likely wonít find yourself in the lineup. Defensive players are becoming less and less respected. Itís not necessarily a bad thing. Itís just that the difference between a player batting .225 and .275 is huge, whereas, the difference in a couple errors really isnít that impactful over the course of a season.

Itís kind of like fantasy football. A QB will score the most points on average, but you donít draft them first because the difference between the top QB and the #10 QB is not that much. Meanwhile, the difference between the #1 and #10 RB is huge.

Point is, the ninth batter in the lineup isnít just your worst hitter anymore. When you get to 6-9 hitters, much of it is situational positioning in the lineup. Thatís often why the lead off guy has a lower batting average than the 2-3 hitters. Instead, they have a good OBP and/or is somebody who doesnít strike out frequently. This is why you canít just treat the #9 guy as a designated bunter either. Because the guy after him isnít necessarily the top hitter on the team relative batting average.
