Default Re: 2018 Commitment - Dakereon Joyner

I think we need to have him ready to play as a frosh.

Right now, we run a type of zone read. However, we seldom run the quarterback because we do not have an adequate backup for Jake. When we do run him, it opens up a lot more for the rbs and it makes the other team play more zone coverage.

Would love to see Jake keep the ball more on the read. I would play DAK on two series per game to get him a feel for the game and have him prepared if Jake gets hurt running a FULL zone read offense.

I think Roper's offense could be very effective if we ran it properly but Muschamp stiffles it because of fear that our only qB will get injured if he runs morr

I wouldn’t be surprised if Urich becomes that guy next year...

I could see this. I could also see Urich, based on coaches comments, stepping into the permanent backup role barring any unfortunate events. I really hope Joyner gets a year to red shirt and another year to develop (with some play time involved other than just mop up duty). This means I hope Bentley decides to graduate and we are solid at QB until Joyner is ready. Once he is, he is going to be electric.

I am not going to say he will be Watson or Shaw, but he will be dang good. If he has the competitive edge that those 2 had then we will be solid for a couple of years further.

Redshirt, barring an injury to Bentley next year, then a year of competing with Urich for back-up minutes.

Urich is going to surprise some people once he gets a little stronger. I think Joyner will still be the guy - three year starter - but Urich will be a better back-up than we have now, which is good since DT QBs like Joyner and Urich get hit a lot more.

Then again, I could also see him red shirting and being dang good for us after. Only time will truly tell.
this would waste a year of his eligibility. we need to keep him for as long as we can, and giving him a few snaps a game isn’t doing that.

We need him to start at QB for at least 3 years!!! Have you guys been watching/reading about his performances in in the playoffs. He is amazing. Last game he throws a 60+ yard TD, it is called back on penalty. He then runs for a 60+ yard TD. Some say he needs to improve his passing. When he has to he throws well but with his running ability he does not have to throw a lot. he doesn't have many passes because they go for TD's or runs for TD. Everybody loves the new QB (I KNOW) but this guy is the real deal. His Team will win the next 2 games and the state championship. He needs to PLAY not seat the BENCH a single year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3, I don't disagree. I was saying that I could see Champ doing it to get his feet wet. In an ideal world he takes a red shirt freshman year, plays some as a red shirt freshman and then takes over as a red shirt sophomore/junior depending on Urich and his progression.

Our situation at QB has been slightly less than ideal the last couple of years though. I am hoping Urich can be that running QB that we need next year.

During our 5 year streak against the UpsTaters, I can recall many times where Shaw and even DT where able to keep drives alive on third down with designed QB runs. They weren’t the speediest QB’s but it worked against Venable’s aggressive schemes. Hopefully having Joyner under center will fit into what Roper is trying to accomplish.

I will never agree that starting a true freshman at QB is the best thing to do for that individual or the team. There are times where Bentley does things that he probably wouldn’t had he not been thrown to the wolves last season. Obviously, we’re finding ways to win which makes those mistakes easier to just brush off, but they’re still there.

Either way, there’s NO reason why Joyner should see the field next year. Jake is our guy as long as he’s here. Even in the event of an injury, Urich should be the one that steps in.

Umm yeah he's redshirting next year. I realize he's done well in HIGH SCHOOL, but this ain't high school any more. You know who else did awesome in high school? Connor Mitch, Brandon McIlwain, Lorenzo Nunez...any of them look ready to play as freshmen here?

The best thing for the team is to red shirt him his freshman year. Then let him get his feet wet Bentley’s senior year and be ready to go full-fledge after that!!

So much this.

Quit putting weight into HS stats and trust the coaches to make the right decision. He needs time to develop into a college QB at a level where his athleticism alone won't win the game anymore.

I think playing last year probably helped Bentley in the getting used to environments aspect. I think most of his mechanics issues are due to offseason work and throwing from weird angles.

There are times that you can play a true freshman QB *cough Alabama cough*. Like when you have the best OLine in the country along with the best defense. Mistakes made are magnified when you don't have either of these.

I stand by my original statement. Red shirt him his freshman year, let him get some kind of play time other than just mop up duty in his red shirt freshman season and go from there. I doubt Urich is going to let him just take it from him though.

Actually, Joyner has done much better in HS than all three of the guys you listed. The better comparison, based on his HS results, is Deshaun Watson. Who did play as a true Freshman - and played well.

The three that you mention were all 4* like Joyner and Mitch had nice passing stats. But Joyner has had the best career, and the only thing that held his numbers back was that he made his team so good that they blow people out. As a result, Joyner has spent the second half of most games on the bench, keeping his stats down.

I am okay with the RS. I think he competes for the back-up job as a RS Freshman, and gets regular minutes as a change of pace QB - a Wildcat QB that can also do damage with his arm.

Kereon's definitely in the mold of a prototypical Roper QB. It would depend on him (and game scores) if he gets any playing time next year if he somehow beats out Urich and becomes the backup QB. I wouldn't bet against his skills and competitive nature.
