So we are 2nd in SEC standings, top 25, and lost a game to a very good KENTUCKY team in Rupp arena, without our starting PG and it seems people are ready to slit their wrists.... LOL

Guys like McKie and Holliman (and frankly Notice nowadays) should be nowhere near the rotation of a good basketball team like we're trying to be. Fortunately we will be deeper next year and won't have to rely as much on walk-ons/2 stars.

people forget that blanton was supposed to be a shooter. he happened to have a terrible injury that changed who he is as an athlete completely. Let's not act like Martin hasnt been recruiting guys that can shoot.

I don't think so. Coming in before the injury, most were saying Blanton was a slasher and effective finisher at the rim, but not necessarily a great shooter. He had to change his game post-injury to be more of a shooter.

Blanton was never a shooter coming out of HS. Had it not been for the devastating hip injury he may be the most athletic player on our team right now. He's developed his shooting out of necessity. Also it seems to be a trend with the players Frank brings in, shooting for the most part gets better over the course of their career. Remember Carrera couldn't hit anything outside of 6 or 7 feet as a freshman and was 40%+ from beyond the arc as a senior. Same could be said with Silva with how he has a good midrange jumper now. Heck the issues with Notice don't seem to be form they seem to be 100% mental at this point, if he gets it worked out we become deadlier. Martin does a good job of developing shots for his players over time, I think that plays into the type of guy that Martin recruits because they're willing to bust their asses to improve in the offseason.

I think that's it. You can make most players serviceable shooters through repetition (maybe not all). But you can't make a non elite shooter an elite shooter without massive alterations to their mechanics.

Shooting, like golf can be taught physically and assisted in the mental department but nothing does more for a shooter than to have confidence and the only way to get confidence is to shoot the ball. A shooter no matter what, must feel like he is going to make the shot, just like a golfer must know he is going to make the 2 foot putt.

Seen some guys with ugly shots drain shots from all over the place, several played here and the reason they shot like that? They have shot so many shots this way, they are confident they will make it when shooting like this. Terry Dozier would shoot the ball 100's of times a day not missing many but still have games the ball would not fall, his jump shot was somewhat unorthodox, his set shot was almost ugly but when hot he was money, Devon Downey and Chuck Eidson also come to mind. Notice will find his shot before the SEC is over I have no doubt.

When you get to college your shot is your shot, you can tweak that shot, work on release points, following through, grip when transitioning a set shot from a jumper but most set shot shooters, who can shoot are set early in basketball, as why would a coach work on something that is not broke. Having a player that has not played the game for long makes that mute and teaching to shoot becomes all about mechanics and timing, depending on the player this can be both an advantage and disadvantage.

If we had consistent shooting with the defense we play we would win most of our games like we did last night against Auburn.

IMO Coach Martin's philosophy is a lot like baseball coaches - like Coach Tanner used to have: if you play solid to excellent defense, you take away points from the other guy/team. And that's the same as scoring points for your team.

Coach Tanner's signature as USC's baseball coach was outstanding team defense: so check out the SEC stats during Tanner's time as our HC, from 2000 to his retirement - USC was the most dominant team in the SEC in fielding percentage, and had nationally elite stats many of those years, defensively.

IMO Coach Martin's signature is also solid to excellent team defense. He and his staff will put players in position to be most effective scoring points, but wins will typically be driven by how well we defend and rebound the ball. Taking away scoring opportunities from our opponents.

And we aren't rebounding very well right now - not as well as Coach Martin and his staff is wanting us to. Just imagine how dominating our defense would be once our young bigs start improving on the rebounding.

I imagine that the type of 100-98 score games with each team going back and forth shooting and scoring would bore Martin to death on the bench. He'll be happy with our points, but not with how we let the other team score. In that game's post-game presser, he'll mostly talk about how poorly he thought we did defensively....

The thing is, if Notice can get out of his slump, we have decent enough shooters right now on this team. Thornwell and Dozier are shooting in the 40%s from behind the arc, and Felder is almost at 50%. Notice is streaky and prone to slumps, but he's capable of shooting in the 35%-40% range, and has been most of his career until this season. Gravett and McKie also contribute to a degree.

We'll never become a Citadel (36+ 3-pt attempts per game) or a UCLA (43% making an average of 11 3s per game) with the 3-point shooting, and I don't think Coach Martin even wants us to. Improve on the rebounding, and cut down on the silly fouling and the turnovers - things any team should be able to improve on - and the Gamecocks will be scary good (they are now, but even more so)...
