Heading upsTate to start off the 2017 indoor season

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...011317aab.html

The University of South Carolina track & field program opens the 2017 indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 14, when it heads to the Upstate for the Clemson Invitational. Field events begin at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, while running events start with the women's 500m run at 12:30 p.m. ET. The last scheduled event is the men's 4x4 relay, set to go off at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Joining the Gamecocks and host Clemson at the event are Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Johnson C. Smith, North Florida, North Carolina A&T and Southern Wesleyan.

Saturday's meet is the first official competition of the season for Carolina and the first time the Gamecocks have competed as a program since last season's NCAA Outdoor National Championships in Oregon.

OPEN SEASON IN USTFCCCA TOP-25

Both Carolina programs will open the 2017 indoor season as top-25 teams, with the men checking in 22nd and the women 24th in the USTFCCCA National Indoor Preseason Rankings.

On the women's squad, Briana Haith (2nd) and Aliyah Abrams (9th) enter the season with top-10 returning times in the 400m, and as a squad Carolina holds the 16th-fastest 4x400 returning mark. Also, Natasha Dicks sports the country's seventh-best returning effort in the triple jump.

For the men, six Gamecocks enter the season with past marks that rank in the national top-30. David Winters ranks fourth in the 200m and 14th in the 60m, and Isaiah Moore is listed 10th in the 60mH. Ncincilili Titi's 200m time ranks 11th, while transfer Ben Bonhurst checks in 11th in the shot put with Josh Awotunde 14th. Last but not least, Markus Leemet opens the season with the nation's 26th-best returning heptathlon score.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS

Four Gamecocks return to the squad in 2017 after finishing last year as NCAA Indoor All-Americans. Natasha Dicks (Triple Jump) and Briana Haith (400m) both earned the honor on the women's side, while Ncincilili Titi (200m) and David Winters (200m) grabbed indoor laurels for the men's squad. Both Haith and Titi were also Indoor All-Americans in 2015.

Several more Gamecock veterans have earned Indoor All-America accolades in previous seasons, including Tyler Brockington, Marisa Bellamy, Precious Holmes and Jussi Kanervo. All four are back in the fold and looking to achieve greatness again in 2017.

Last but not least, several Outdoor All-Americans return from a very successful 2016 NCAA Championships. On the women's side, Brockington (400m Hurdles, 4x400m), Holmes (4x400m), Aliyah Abrams (400m, 4x400m), Natasha Dicks (Triple Jump) and Shelby Freedman (Javelin) were honored at outdoor nationals last season. For the men, Kanervo (400m Hurdles) and Josh Awotunde (Shot Put) grabbed outdoor laurels a season ago.

SEC CHAMPION BACK IN THE FOLD

Though she has exhausted her indoor eligibility, senior Nakita Gray is already training for her final season of outdoor competition. Gray was the SEC Indoor Champion in the high jump last season, with a winning mark of 5-11 ½. When she earned the crown last season, Gary became the first Gamecock female student-athlete to win SEC Indoor top honors in any event since 2011, and she added anther medal to the Carolina trophy case after alumna Jeannelle Scheper was the 2015 SEC Outdoor medalist.

LAST TRIP TO CLEMSON

Carolina returns to the Clemson Indoor Complex for the first time since 2015, when it ran in both the Orange and Purple Classic and the Bob Pollock Invitational.

Among current Gamecocks, Tyler Brockington had the most success at the 2015 Orange and Purple Classic, as she won the women's 200m dash. Briana Haith finished second in the women's 400m dash, and the duo combined to lead Carolina to the women's 4x400m relay victory. On the men's side, Jussi Kanervo and Ryan Bermudez were part of the winning 4x400m relay team, while Isaiah Moore finished second in long jump and Richard Fish placed runner-up in pole vault. Overall, Carolina won 11 events at the meet, which opened the 2015 indoor campaign.

The University of South Carolina track & field program opened their 2017 indoor season on Saturday with a hugely successful day at the Clemson Invitational. The Gamecocks won 10 events at the Clemson Indoor Complex and finished with 27 podium finishes.

Both newcomers and veterans were victorious for Carolina on Saturday. Hailey Sweatman, Taranisha Taylor, Isaiah Moore, Simon Gyllensten, Tye Williams, Michael Wamer, Josh Awotunde and Ncincilili Titi each won an individual title at Clemson, with several Gamecocks making a mark on the program's record book. Also, Carolina brought home a win in the women's distance medley relay and the men's 4x400m relay.

Overall, Carolina's 10 victories led all teams on Saturday, giving head coach Curtis Frye and the Gamecocks loads of momentum for the long season ahead.

Man hasn't Curtis Frye been here about twenty years at this point?

That guy has a consistently great program.

Guessing it's a Title IX deal why there's only a women's XC.

As for the men's long distance events, looking at the results sheet:

we were 2nd, 3rd & 7th in the 500 meter run (Clemson's only competitor was 6th for comparison)

20th in the 800 meter (Clemson was 1st 4th & 13th)

14th in the 1 mile (Clemson 1st and DNF)

neither school competed in the 3000 meter

3rd & 4th in the 5000 meter (no Clemson runners in that one; 8 competitors altogether)

Up to Nashville for our first SEC competition (amongst others)

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...011917aab.html

Full of momentum after a strong opening weekend, the University of South Carolina track & field program is back in action this weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The two-day meet begins Friday at 4 p.m. CT, with Saturday's action starting at 11 a.m. CT inside of the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility.

Carolina and host Vanderbilt will be joined by Arizona, Arkansas, Furman, Georgia Tech, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, Southern Miss, Tennessee State, UAB and Western Kentucky at the meet. This is Carolina's first look at fellow SEC rivals this season and also its first competition against ranked programs; the Arkansas women are ranked second and the men fourth in the preseason USTFCCCA rankings. Carolina, of course, is ranked 22nd in the men's poll and 24th on the women's side.

Good showing last week at Vanderbilt

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...012117aad.html

Saturday brought more triumphs for the University of South Carolina track & field program, as the Gamecocks were victorious in two events at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Isaiah Moore and Michael Wamer each won their event at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility, just two of the many strong efforts from Carolina to close the event.

Moore won the 60mH on Saturday, while Wamer captured the triple jump. Both Gamecocks won their event for the second consecutive week, and they were joined on the podium Saturday by teammates Aliyah Abrams, Josh Awotunde, Natasha Dicks and Ncincilili Titi to close a great weekend in Nashville.

Moore was the top finisher in 60mH prelims, with his 7.93 booking the top seed in the finals. In his second run, Moore lowered his time to 7.80, a new season-best and the fifth-best mark in the nation this season. Matt Froschauer also qualified for finals and finished eighth.

Wamer was eager to build on a victorious opening weekend at Clemson, and he did just that by setting a personal record for the second straight week. His mark of 52-1 was good for the triple jump victory and ranks seventh nationally this season. In addition, it’s the second-best mark in Carolina history.

Titi made it through to 60m finals with a seventh-place finish in the early session, and he was a big mover the second time around. The junior clocked a time of 6.80 to move up four spots and on to the podium with a third-place result.

Carolina stood on the podium again in the women’s 400m, with Abrams making her season debut in the event. The sophomore finished in 53.46 to place third at the meet and establish the fourth-fastest time in the nation this season. Precious Holmes came in fifth on Saturday; her time of 54.36 ranks 14th nationally.

Dicks added a third-place finish in her best triple jump effort of the season. The senor posted a mark of 42-10 ¾, finishing third at the meet and setting the nation’s eighth-best mark of the season to date.

Men’s shot put continues to be a strength for Carolina, as Awotunde was the top collegiate finisher and placed second overall. His throw of 63-0 ¾ is a new personal best and ranks third both on the Carolina records list and the 2017 national chart. Ben Bonhurst placed fifth on Saturday with a throw of 59-6 ¾ that will likely place him in the national top-25 this week and Eric Favors, who entered the week with the nation’s best freshman mark, finished sixth with an effort of 58-4 ½.

Carolina took their first swing at the women’s 4x400m relay Saturday and left Nashville with a strong result. The quartet of Abrams, Briana Haith, Holmes and Marisa Bellamy came in second behind Arkansas with a time of 3:38.58. That mark ranks 14th in the nation to date.

Several more Gamecocks just missed the podium on Saturday but turned in strong efforts. Makyla Stanley (fourth) and Maiya Dendy (sixth) made the finals of the 60m, Alycia Springs placed fifth in the shot put, Ryan Bermudez earned sixth in the 400m, Milan Parks took seventh in the 60mH and Otis Jones was seventh in the 800m.

And some more good showings in Fayetteville against some stout competition

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...012817aad.html

The last day of the 2017 Razorback Invitational brought more success for the University of South Carolina track & field program. Guided by podium finishes from individuals Josh Awotunde, Natasha Dicks and Isaiah Moore and a breakout performance from the women's 4x400m relay team, Carolina finished ninth in both the men’s and women’s standings at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

The Gamecock men finished with 34 points, and the women ended the meet with 28. Host Arkansas took the men’s team title, with 99.5 points, and the women’s championship went to LSU with 84.33 points.

Awotunde placed second in the shot put, while Dicks earned a third-place result in the triple jump and Moore took third in the 60mH. Aliyah Abrams, Eric Favors, Precious Holmes, Markus Leemet, Taranisha Taylor and Michael Wamer also earned top-eight finishes for Carolina, and the women’s 4x4 squad took second place in the 4x400m Invitational with one of the fastest times in the NCAA this season.

Carolina’s first highlight of the day came in the 400m, with Holmes and Abrams both scoring. Holmes was one of the fastest runners in the early heats, stopping the clock in 54.17 to eventually finish eighth. Abrams placed fourth in the fastest heat of the Invitational portion of the event, coming in fifth overall with a time of 53.68.

Soon the Carolina shot put crew was hard at work for the men’s squad. Awotunde continued his run of podium finishes by placing second in the event, with a throw of 60-10. Favors was right behind him; the nation’s top freshman in the event set a new PR with a mark of 59-7 ½ to post a fourth-place result.

After winning his heat in the prelims of the men’s 60mH, Moore was on to the finals. The junior recovered from a tough start and finished third, with a time of 7.83, and he earned six points for the Gamecocks.

Just minutes later, Taylor was on the track for the women’s 60mH final. The senior finished in 8.40, earning four points with a fifth-place result.

Wamer has been one of Carolina’s breakout performers this season, setting new personal bests and ranking in the top-10 nationally in the triple jump. The senior continued his strong season with a sixth-place finish in Fayetteville; his mark of 49-11 earned three points.

Leemet began the day listed sixth in the heptathlon and was in range of another scoring chance. The senior set a new personal record in the 60mH, at 8.34, and that propelled him to an eighth-place result. His final tally was 5,274 points.

Right as Leemet was finishing the heptathlon, Dicks was putting the finishing touches on another good day in the triple jump. The All-American set another season best, at 42-11, and scored six points with a third-place result.

The Gamecock women finished the day running in the fastest heat of the 4x400m relay. Abrams, Holmes, Tyler Brockington and Briana Haith combined to post a time of 3:32.77 and finish second overall.

NOTABLE

The Carolina women’s 4x4 relay team improved all the way up to third in the country with their time. They finished just behind Southern Cal, whose time of 3:30.66 is tops in the nation.

Still doing well overall as the regular season nears the end

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...042217aab.html

Another day at Sheila & Morris Cregger Track produced another round of victories for the University of South Carolina as the Gamecocks found the winner's circle 11 times at the 2017 USC Open. Mary Reiser (3000m), Allie Mueller (1500m), Yann Randrianasolo (long jump), Rougui Sow (long jump), Otis Jones (800m), Nakita Gray (high jump), Kara Lyles (400mH), Eric Favors (shot put) and Tye Williams (high jump) earned individual victories, and the men's 4x100m and women's 4x400m relays also took home wins.

Saturday was the final regular-season home meet of the season for the Gamecocks, who honored 26 graduating student-athletes as part of Senior Day festivities.

The day started on a high note, with Reiser taking the 3000m victory in her final regular-season event on the Carolina campus. The senior kicked into high gear over the final 200 meters, reclaiming the lead late and finishing with a time of 10:01.41.

A week after Ncincilili Titi electrified the crowd with the NCAA's top 200m time this season, he ran the anchor leg on Carolina's fastest 4x100m relay of the season. Titi was joined by DeVon Lewis, David Winters and Ryan Bermudez, and the group turned in a time of 39.37. That matches the 10th-best mark in school history, and it's the 13th-best time in the NCAA this season.

Mueller earned her first career victory in the 1500m. She took the lead on the final turn and surged to a time of 4:38.71, almost three seconds clear of the field.

Randrianasolo was victorious last week at Cregger Track, and he added a second consecutive triumph on Saturday. His top mark of 24-9 ¼ was the winning attempt against a very strong field.

In her first long jump appearance since setting the world's best long jump effort of the season two weeks ago, Sow was victorious once again. She was the lone competitor to go over 20 feet on Saturday, with a best effort of 20-10 ¾ into a headwind. Her closest competitor was teammate Makyla Stanley, at 18-6.

After silver medal finishes in his last two races, Jones brought home his first victory of the season in the 800m. His time of 1:51.81 bested the field by more than a full second.

Gray won the high jump last week at the Gamecock Invitational, a feat she matched Saturday in her final home competition. She equaled her top mark from last week as well, clearing 5-10 ¾.

Lyles also earned a Cregger Track victory for the second weekend in a row. The sophomore captured the 400mH in a time of 59.26, her second-best effort of the season.

Favors earned his first career victory in the shot put. His top effort checked in at 55-5 1/2, two feet clear of the field.

Williams set a new outdoor PR on Saturday, clearing seven feet outdoors for the first time. His final mark was 7-1 ¾, which ranks third in Gamecock history and 12th in the NCAA this season.

The final victory came from the women's 4x4 relay. Carolina fielded two of their indoor All-Americans in the same heat for the first time this outdoor season, and the final results was a time of 3:33.68 from Precious Holmes, Marisa Bellamy, Tyler Brockington and Kara Lyles. That time ranks 16th in the nation this season.

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS

Carolina competes in its final regular season meet of 2017 next week at the 123rd Penn Relays Carnival. The meet runs April 27-29 at famed Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

The University of South Carolina track & field program reaches a milestone weekend as it hosts the 2017 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet runs Thursday-Saturday, May 11-13, at Sheila & Morris Cregger Track on the Carolina campus.

Action begins at 10:15 a.m. ET on Thursday and 11 a.m. ET both Friday and Saturday. Fans planning to follow the SEC Championships, either in-person at Cregger Track or from afar, should visit Carolina's Championship Central page for live results, meet schedules and more. Tickets are still available here, with all-session passes just $25 for adults and $10 for youth 18 and under.

This is the first time since 2001 that the Gamecocks have hosted the SEC Outdoor Championships. Joining Carolina this week are conference rivals from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

WATCH THE GAMECOCKS LIVE ON SEC NETWORK+

SEC Network+ will stream live coverage from Cregger Track on both Friday and Saturday. SEC Network subscribers can view the stream beginning at 6:25 p.m. ET Friday and 3:10 p.m. ET Saturday. Also, highlights from the meet will run on ESPNU on Wednesday, May 17 from 8-10 p.m. ET.

2001 -- THE LAST SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS AT CAROLINA

South Carolina last hosted the SEC Outdoor Championships in 2001 at the old Weems Baskin Track. Carolina's women placed third, and the men came in eighth. Arkansas won the event on the women's side, with Tennessee taking the men's crown.

The Gamecock women won four individual titles at the 2001 meet. Miki Barber captured her third consecutive 400m dash conference championship, and she led both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays to victory. Also, Tacita Bass was the SEC medalist in the 400mH.

Two Gamecock men stood at the top of the podium in 2001: Otukile Lekote (800m) and Chris Steddum (pole vault).

LAST TIME OUT -- APRIL 27-29 -- SEVEN VICTORIES HIGHLIGHT CAROLINA'S PENN RELAYS TRIP

South Carolina had a huge weekend at the Penn Relays, held April 27-29 in Philadelphia, including the team's 21st Wagon Wheel. The Gamecocks won the women's 4x200m relay, with the quartet of Precious Holmes, Tyler Brockington, Aalayah Sanders and Maiya Dendy grabbing the title with a time of 1:33.79

Carolina also won six individual titles at the Penn Relays. Leading the way was Tye Williams, who broke Carolina's 29-year-old high jump record with a mark of 7-4 ½ (VIDEO). It vaults the junior up to second on the NCAA list this season.

Other champions from Penn include Clarence Gallop, who was the hammer throw winner with a mark of 220-11. That's the second-best mark in Carolina history and ranks 20th nationally. In the pole vault, Armand Woodley set a PR for the third week in a row and was victorious with a mark of 16-6 3/4. Josh Awotunde took the shot put; his top effort of 65-6 was his best ever in a collegiate competition and ranks sixth nationally. Yann Randrianasolo set a long jump PR and won his event on the men's side. The mark of 25-5 1/2 is 18th in the NCAA. Last but not least, Rougui Sow was the women's long jump champion at 20-8 1/2.

GAMECOCKS RISE IN USTFCCCA NATIONAL POLLS

Both Carolina sides are ranked in the USTFCCCA national top-25 heading into the SEC Championships. The Gamecock men occupy the 19th position, while the women are ranked 25th.

A gold medal run highlights the final day

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...051317aab.html

The 2017 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships ended with a bang for the University of South Carolina on Saturday, thanks in large part to redshirt senior Tyler Brockington. The Greensboro, N.C., native sped away from the field in the finals of the women’s 400m hurdles to win the individual SEC title at Sheila & Morris Cregger Track.

Brockington wasn’t the only Gamecock to electrify the Cregger Track crowd with a podium finish on Saturday. Josh Awotunde and Ben Bonhurst grabbed top-three spots in the shot put, Isaiah Moore finished in third in the 100m hurdles and Natasha Dicks came on strong at the end of the triple jump for a third-place finish.

Overall, the Carolina men finished in eighth place, with 46 points. That’s their best result since 2010. The women placed 11th, their best finish since 2012, with 31 points.

Looks like Tyler Brockington didn't make it in the women's 400 meter hurdles . After winning the SEC outdoor with a 55-something she had a 59-something here .
