Default MBB Commit - PG Kory Holden (Transfer)

Didn't see a thread for this, but reportedly Holden has us Miami, Arizona, LaSalle and VaTech as his Top 5. I think Maryland might be in the mix too. Holden's expected to make a visit soon.

Averaged 17.7 a game in CAA last year as a sophomore and is viewed as the #1 transfer player available. Would have to sit out next season, but would have two years of eligibility after. He would be a big get for the season after we lose Thornwell and Notice.

From The State:

Holden said he talks every day with Martin and the message he’s received from him is simple.

“Come in, be the guy basically,” Holden said.

Not that excited - he played for a Delaware team that was not that good and shot about 39% - on twos and threes. 39% is okay for threes - just as good as shooting 58.5% on twos - but the 39% on twos is not good.

Bottom line is that he got his average by shooting a lot for a bad team. And he would be a RS Junior at the same time that Stroman is a Senior, Dozier is a Junior, and our incoming PG from NYC is a Sophomore.

Just saying, if he is the #1 prospect, the pickings are pretty slim. And if he can come in and be the Man, that is not a good reflection on the current roster. But I have not seen him play and he has some nice offers - if the coaching staff likes him, I will be behind it.

I'd definitely get excited about this. He would give us some nice perimeter shooting. Plus with Dozier's size they can be on the court at the same time and on top of that you never know what kind of attrition you will see from year to year. The guy knows how to put the ball in the basket and we need as many guys on our team as possible that know how to do that.

Agree with gotrice...the one thing that plagued this team has been shooting efficiancy...they can play defense, they can rebound...but they struggle shooting still....we also need a guy who can create his own shot....we have the role players we need (well we did until the five guys got suspended) but we need that guy that when the clock is ticking down, can create and make a shot.

My point is that he is not that good a shooter. A guard should shoot around 45% on twos, this guy is under 40%. He is respectable from 3, but shot a lower percentage than Carrera and almost exactly the same as Notice - even though both of those individuals tailed off badly at the end of the year. At one point, they were shooting a much higher percentage on three pointers.

And - remember this - Holden was doing it against much weaker competition. Early in the season when Notice and Carrera were going against teams similar to the ones that Holden played all year, Carrera was up around 50% and Notice was well over 40%.

Just saying to all of the people that cry about our shooting - this is another guy that will throw up a lot of shots and miss a lot. Again, I trust the coaches, but not sure that we are getting what people are thinking.

I'd be good with accepting him as a transfer. It's not unprecedented for CAA players to have success on a bigger stage. This guy dropped 35 on Boston College and 23 on Villanova, so he's shown he can do it against better competition. I don't know if he would come in and be The Man, but he would at least provide another solid backcourt option.

I agree with your premise here but BC went win less in the ACC this year. Dropping 23 pts on Villanova is good though. We need a PG who can score because we don't have enough production out of our wing players. The exception being Thornwell but he was streaky this past season.

I know BC was bad, but they're still a power conference team and pulling players slightly better than CAA. Hell, we could have used a guard that could drop 35 on Mizzou, Tennessee, or Miss State.

At worst, he'd be a solid backup pg. At best, he could have a Damion Lee type effect on the team. I'd be OK with either end of that spectrum.

At best, he's an upgrade on Stroman. At worst, he shoots 35% and has more turnovers than assists.

That is shortsighted, he shot 40% from the field, 38% from 3 and averaged 4.2 assists per game on a team that could not shoot very well...

Other than varying a little on the rounding up/down thing, we said the same thing. Three point numbers are good but not great, two pointers are a little below average. The assists are good but indicate that he had the ball in his hands - a lot - because he was a good player on a bad team. It remains to be seen how that translates to a team and opposition that will have much better players.

Not that excited because we have PGs and this guy will need the ball (a lot) to be effective. If Stroman does not come back, or if Dozier is getting moved to off guard, or if the Freshman from NYC is a reach, then he makes sense. If none of those things winds up being the case, then we will have experienced veterans coming back that will be pushed aside for a transfer. And I really think Frank has recruited better than that.

Holden enjoys his official visit to USC

APRIL 17, 2016 BY PHIL KORNBLUT

6-2 Deleware transfer PG Kory Holden was at USC over the weekend for an official visit. It was the first of at least two other visits he plans to make as he goes thru the recruiting process again. Holden also plans to visit Seton Hall unofficially Tuesday and Baylor officially at the end of the month. He’s also looking at Kansas.

Holden said he enjoyed the USC visit and got an inside look at how Frank Martin runs his program.

“I liked how close the players were, the coaching staff and how it was like a big community and family,” Holden said. “Coach Martin was what I thought he was. He’ll tell you the truth. He’ll tell you what he wants from you and lets you know he’s going to coach you.”

Holden added that Martin spelled out for him how he sees him fitting into the program and the role he would play.

“He wants a two point guard system so he said for me to sit out, get bigger and stronger and come in and play.”

Holden said he doesn’t have a favorite yet and wants to take his other visits before identifying one. He does not have a timetable for a decision.

Last season as a sophomore Holden averaged 18 points per game shooting 80% from the line and 39% behind the three point arc. He will have to sit out next season and will have two seasons to play.

A 6'2 PG that averaged 18ppg in college, to put that in perspective for you Stroman averaged 16.8 points his SR year at Keenan, so you are worried about hurting feelings and not winning games?

38% from three is plenty good.

I'd have to see the shots he is missing from 2 pt range. If he is the best player on a bad team, he very well may be forced to take bad shots.

that could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. It's possible that he will take better and fewer shots at Carolina and improve that percentage. Or he could be wired to take bad shots and his tenure will not go well here.

Very similar dynamic to Kaela Davis, really. Question his how he fits into a different situation.

The team needs players and scorers and swag. I'd take him in a heart beat.
