Default ***Can You Hear Me Running - Cross Country 2016 Season***

Starting things off this morning with the Carolina Challenge, but on a new course

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...083116aaa.html

South Carolina begins its 2016 cross country season on Saturday morning on a new home course, as the Carolina Challenge pits 15 collegiate teams on the Sandhill REC course in the northeast part of Columbia.

The Gamecocks, who return 14 active letter-winners this fall, kick off the season on a tried-and-true course. With the course's parking entrance located across from the main entryway to The Village at Sandhill shopping center, the Sandhill REC course hosts numerous high school and collegiate races, including the South Carolina High School League state meet each year. The 5K races this Saturday will provide a good first test for the 15 collegiate women's teams set to run.

Senior Mary Reiser tops the returners for South Carolina, as she has posted top-10 times in program history in both the 5K and 6K, including last year's SEC Championships finish of 20:45.7, the third-fastest 6K run by a Gamecock. Also back are all five scorers from last year's SEC Championship team. A crop of 13 newcomers, including 11 freshmen, a sophomore transfer and a graduate student transfer, will push the returners.

Admission is free for fans who want to watch Saturday's races, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the college women's 5K. The college men's 5K is set for a 9:40 a.m. start, with the open, 2.2-mile high school race beginning at 10:10 a.m. Fans need to enter the Sandhill REC site at the traffic signal at Promenade Place and Clemson Road. A reminder to all South Carolina students, double points are being offered on the Gamecock Student Rewards app for coming out to Saturday's event, with a special prize going to a random winner who attends both Gamecock cross country home races this fall.

USC wins the Division I portion

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...090316aaa.html

On a beautiful day after the rains of Friday, South Carolina started the 2016 cross country season with a solid win in the Division I portion of the Carolina Challenge, a meet hosted by the Gamecocks at the Sandhill REC 5K course.

The Gamecocks took the title with 29 points, besting Winthrop's 53 in second. Senior Mary Reiser finished second among Division I competitors, clocking a 18:39.67 in the season's first race, just three seconds in back of Winthrop's Harper Henson (18:36.44). For Reiser, the Gamecocks' top returner, that's a 12-second improvement from last year's lidlifter at home.

Freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard led the next three Gamecocks who placed 11-13 overall, posting an 18:59.90 time. Redshirt junior Martha McCoy (19:04.30) edged out sophomore Allison Mueller (19:05.02). Both improved their time from last year's opener by over 40 seconds on the new home course. Freshman Leah Ford rounded out the scoring five in 16th (19:22.77), while fellow rookies Emily Crounse (19:38.00) and Sarah-Sims McGrath (19:40.14) finished in 19th and 21st around junior Allie Sprague in 20th (19:38.85).

Heading to Winthrop this morning

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091616aaa.html

South Carolina continues its cross country campaign on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. EDT in the Winthrop/adidas Invitational, held on the Winthrop Lake Course in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Gamecocks are fresh after winning the Division I portion of the season-opening Carolina Challenge two weeks ago. Senior Mary Reiser led the team in that meet with her 18:39.67 clocking, a solid outing in the first race of the year. Freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard finished 10th among the collegiate competitors in the home meet, breaking 19 minutes in her debut for the Garnet and Black.

Three more Gamecocks are expected to compete in the 5K race on Winthrop's campus after missing the lidlifter, including juniors Kaylee Wessel and Monica York, both of whom posted her personal-best 5K time in last year's meet in Rock Hill.

The women's race begins at 10 a.m. on the Winthrop Lake Course, which is near the Winthrop Coliseum, with an award ceremony following the event.

A near perfect performance

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091716aaa.html

South Carolina claimed victory in the 33rd Winthrop/adidas Invitational Division I section on Saturday morning at the Winthrop Lake Course, coming three points away from a perfect score.

With 18 points, the Gamecocks cruised to the Division I title, besting the host Winthrop Eagles' 46. USC Upstate finished third, a point ahead of Presbyterian.

Senior Mary Reiser paced the field with a time of 18:40.3 on the five-kilometer course, just off her pace from the Carolina Challenge two weeks earlier. Freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard finished second at 18:47.3, shaving 12 seconds off her first collegiate race time. Redshirt junior Martha McCoy ranked fourth overall, just behind Winthrop's Olivia Paxton while posting a time of 18:57.9. Sophomore Allison Mueller rounded out the top five with a 19:01.1, a near four-second improvement from the season opener.

Junior Kaylee Wessel rounded out the scoring in her first race of the year, finishing in 19:06.4, a new personal best. Junior Allie Sprague ranked ninth (19:21.4) and freshman Emily Crounse ranked 10th with her 19:22.7 clocking, a 16-second betterment in two weeks of work. Stoddard, Mueller, Wessel and Crounse all had collegiate-best timing as well as two others, junior Sarah Taylor (19:27.5, 11th) and Colleen Openshaw (19:49.7, 17th).

"I was very pleased with the team's performance," said Gamecock assistant coach for distance Andrew Allden. "It was a significant step up from two weeks ago. Mary did a really good job of taking the lead and pushing the pace. Anna Kathryn Stoddard continues to do a great job as our No. 2 again. She had a very strong last mile and ran faster than the first week. I feel like we did much better against our Division I foes than we did two weeks ago. I think this sets us up well for our next race."

The Gamecocks continue the season in two weeks, running at the Notre Dame/Joe Piane Invitational on Sept. 30

Traveling up to Notre Dame for a tough national match

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092916aaa.html

South Carolina puts its best on the line on Friday afternoon against a packed field in the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational. Gun time is 4:15 p.m. for the Gold Division race.

The Gamecocks won their first two Division I events against smaller fields, taking the Carolina Challenge and the Winthrop/adidas Invitational team titles. Senior Mary Reiser has led the team in both meets thus far, while freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard and redshirt junior Martha McCoy have been close behind in each race. Sophomore Allison Mueller has been fourth on the team each time, improving her personal-best time in each race.

That quartet has been supported by juniors Kaylee Wessel, Allie Sprague and Monica York, with Wessel and York both finishing strong at Winthrop in their first race of the season. All three hail from Illinois and will run in front of family in South Bend on Friday afternoon.

Full results will first be at UND.com and DeltaTiming.com for Friday’s race.

A respectable 15th place finish out of 28

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...093016aaa.html

South Carolina's runners tallied their best times in college almost across the board in a 15th-place showing at the 61st annual Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on the Burke Golf Course.

Competing in the Gold Division 5K, the Gamecocks ranked 15th in the field of 28, a solid showing in the first crowded field of the year. Senior Mary Reiser led the team for the third time this season, finishing 35th with a time of 17:54.3, the second time she's broken 18 minutes in a 5K at South Carolina. Six of her teammates posted collegiate best times, including two of her junior teammates running near home. Monica York (71st, 18:17.9) and Allie Sprague (80th, 18:24.1) both improved their best time, by 25 and 41 seconds, respectively, running just across the border from their home state of Illinois.

Freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard continued her stellar rookie campaign, improving her time by 23 seconds while finishing 84th overall. Sophomore Allison Mueller shaved her time to 18:34.1, crossing the line in 100th position. Redshirt junior Martha McCoy posted her best time since her freshman year, ranking 108th with an 18:40.5 timing. Freshmen Emily Crounse (120th, 18:48.9) and Leah Ford (153rd, 19:06.6) both posted personal bests as well.

"I'm very pleased with the team's performance today," said Gamecock assistant track coach for distance Andrew Allden. "We had a lot of PRs and lots of runners solidly in the 18s. This course is fast, but fair and a true showing. Mary (Reiser) got out aggressively and ran with the top group early but struggled in the last mile. She has more to come. That experience will be good for her heading into the postseason. Monica York really got back into the lineup in a big way. That was good to see."

In the Women's Open 5K, junior Sarah Taylor broke 19 minutes for the first time as a Gamecock, finishing 56th with her 18:59.7 clocking. Freshman Sarah-Sims McGrath lopped 23 seconds off her top time this year with her 68th-place finish. Senior Kayla Scott continued her improvement in the Garnet and Black, ranking 71st with her time of 19:20.5.

Once again, a good showing in a challenging field, finishing 13th out of 26 down in Alabama

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...101416aaa.html

South Carolina’s cross country team put together a solid showing in the Crimson Classic at the Harry Pritchett Running Course, finishing 13th overall and fifth among its fellow Southeastern Conference competitors in the field.

In the field of 30 teams overall and 26 in the University Division, senior Mary Reiser led the charge to finish in the top half. She posted a 42nd-place finish in 21:46.2, while sophomore Allison Mueller, running just her second 6K at South Carolina, finished 72nd and second on the team in 22:11.9, a personal best. Three juniors, Monica York (106th, 22:44.6), Martha McCoy (126th, 22:59.2) and Kaylee Wessel (129th, 23:02.7) rounded out the Gamecocks’ top five.

Freshman Emily Crounse, one of seven freshmen running their first 6K, ranked 132nd overall with a clocking of 23:04.3. Redshirt freshman Colleen Openshaw finished 11 spots behind Crounse in 23:12.8. In total, 10 Gamecocks posted 6K personal bests, including Mueller, Crounse and Openshaw.

“It was a solid team showing,” remarked assistant track coach for distance Andrew Allden. “On the plus side, we beat Tennessee and LSU. It was a little warm, and the course is challenging. Allison Mueller had a standout performance in a solid race today. Another who jumped up was Colleen Openshaw. She’s been working her way back into the lineup after being out all last year. Emily Crounse also had a really solid run for a freshman in her first 6K. We have the capability to get better. We can run better, and we’ll try to do that at SECs.”

Oh well, a tough going at the SEC Championships

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...102816aaa.html

On an unseasonably warm morning at the University of Arkansas's Agri Park, South Carolina finished 13th in the 2016 SEC Cross Country Championships.

Senior Mary Reiser (61st) led the way as she has all year, clocking a 22.09.9 on the tough 6K home course of the Razorbacks. Freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard, competing in her first 6K, ranked 90th with a time of 22:46.0. Sophomore Allison Mueller (100th, 23:03.6) and junior Kaylee Wessel (106th, 23:08.8) were next to cross for the Gamecocks, with junior Monica York (115th, 23:31.4) rounding out the scoring.

Redshirt freshman Colleen Openshaw (120th, 23:41.6) and freshman Emily Crounse (124th, 23:46.4) both had fair showings in their first SEC Championship.

Missouri's Karissa Schweizer won the event, finishing in 20:10.6, while Arkansas took the team title by 30 points over Mississippi, 46-76. South Carolina runs in two weeks at the NCAA Southeast Regional, hosted by the University of Virginia on Nov. 11.

On to the NCAA Regionals in Virginia

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...111016aab.html

South Carolina faces another tough field on Friday, facing 33 other teams in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Southeast Regional Championships on Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.

The Gamecocks take a familiar group to Panorama, sending the same 12 that competed at the SEC Championships two weeks prior to the regional race. Led by senior Mary Reiser, South Carolina hopes its fortunes improve running closer to its home base. Senior Kayla Scott, redshirt junior Martha McCoy, juniors Allie Sprague, Kaylee Wessel and Monica York and sophomore Allison Mueller bring the postseason experience alongside Reiser. Freshmen Emily Crounse, Leah Ford, Colleen Openshaw and Anna Kathryn Stoddard as well as junior Sarah Taylor all run in their first regionals on Friday morning.

The race, set to begin at 11 a.m. EST for the women’s 6K, pits the best in the region, which consists of schools in the states of Kentucky, Virginia, North and South Carolina, on the course near the grounds of the host institution, the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers have won three of the last five regionals, but they enter the week 10th in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings. The top-two team finishers and top four individuals of teams who don’t earn a bid to move on as a group advance to the NCAA Championships, held Nov. 19 at Indiana State University.

Oh well, an uphill climb to get to the main NCAA's and the bid fell short, ending the season

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...111116aab.html

South Carolina’s cross country team wrapped up its 2016 season in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday morning, finishing 24th in the event.

Senior Mary Reiser led the team as she did all season, finishing 74th with a time of 22:06.4. Freshman Anna Kathryn Stoddard posted her best career 6K time (22:27.1) while ranking 103rd. Sophomore Allison Mueller ranked third on the team (22:42.8, 123rd), while junior Kaylee Wessel (23:24.8, 160th) and freshman Emily Crounse (23:35.4, 172nd) rounded out the scoring.

NC State claimed the regional title over 31 other teams, while Louisville eked out second and the automatic NCAA Championships bid by a point over Kentucky. Coastal Carolina’s Annie Bothma claimed the individual title, finishing the 6K course in 20:15.4.

This caps a season where South Carolina won three of its outings, including both home races.
