Default ***Nobody's Fault But Mine - Women's Tennis 2016-17 Season***

Hosting a small but eclectic group of schools to start out the Fall season

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091516aab.html

The Gamecock women's tennis team will kick-off the 2016-17 season when they host the South Carolina Fall Invitational this weekend, Sept. 16-18, at the Carolina Tennis Center. Six Gamecocks are set to compete against a field consisting of North Florida, Middle Tennessee and Winthrop.

"I'd like to see some consistency, work ethic and intensity this weekend," said head coach Kevin Epley. "These are the foundations for everything -- we're going to outwork people and keep the ball in the court."

Despite a youthful roster a season ago, Carolina was able to capture its 22nd-straight NCAA Tournament berth, its fourth under Epley. However, for now, the focus is on using this time as an opportunity to fine-tune their game.

"Individually, we're getting to know the younger ones," said Epley. "We're creating developmental plans and we'll use this weekend to further those as well."

Two of the three opponents headed to Columbia this weekend were also NCAA Tournament teams last season. North Florida fell in the first round to Georgia, 4-0, while Winthrop suffered a 4-2 loss to the Gamecocks.

Weekend Schedule
Friday
9 a.m. -- Doubles: South Carolina vs. Middle Tennessee | North Florida vs. Winthrop
10:30 a.m. -- Singles: South Carolina vs. North Florida | Winthrop vs. Middle Tennessee
1 p.m. -- Doubles: South Carolina vs. North Florida | Winthrop vs. Middle Tennessee

Saturday
9 a.m. -- Doubles: South Carolina vs. Winthrop | North Florida vs. Middle Tennessee
10:30 a.m. -- Singles: South Carolina vs. Winthrop | North Florida vs. Winthrop
1 p.m. -- Doubles: South Carolina vs. Middle Tennessee | North Florida vs. Winthrop

Sunday
9 a.m. -- Singles: South Carolina vs. Winthrop | North Florida vs. Middle Tennessee
Admission for the weekend is free.

The Gamecocks’ 2016-17 season is officially underway as the team completed day one of the South Carolina Fall Invitational at the Carolina Tennis Center on Friday.

The Gamecocks began the day by taking two out of three matches against Middle Tennessee in doubles. The team of Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Silvia Chinellato kicked things off by earning a 6-4 win over Alory Pereira and Holly Horsfall. Hannah Templeton and Alison Mills followed that up with a 6-3 triumph over Costanza Magazzini and Marta Peris Herrero.

In the second leg of Friday’s action, Carolina took on North Florida in singles, splitting the matchup 3-3. Brigit Folland, Rachel Rohrabacher and Templeton each picked up wins for the Gamecocks.

The final portion of Friday’s slate featured three more doubles matches, this time against North Florida. Martins and Rachel Rohrabacher captured a 6-2 victory over Irina Karangozishvili and Quetzali Vazquez, while Chinellato and Folland posted a 6-4 win over Rafaela Gomez and Luise Intert. The Ospreys salvaged a win in the third and final match.

Carolina gets right back at it on Saturday at 9 a.m. For updates, be sure to follow the Gamecocks on Twitter (@GamecockWTennis) and visit GamecocksOnline.com.

Another good showing on day two

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091716aab.html

The Gamecock women's tennis team played well in their second day of fall play at the South Carolina Fall Invitational on Saturday. Carolina won five of their six doubles matches and four out of six in singles action.

Like Friday, the Gamecocks began the day with three doubles matches. Carolina came out firing against Winthrop, eventually earning a 3-0 sweep of the Eagles. Alison Mills and Hannah Templeton got things going with a 6-2 win over Alysa Mourad and Nida Kamal. Shortly after the conclusion of that match, the duo of Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Brigit Folland captured a 6-3 victory. Rachel Rohrabacher and Silvia Chinellato capped the morning off by topping Caitlin Cridland and Megan Kauffman, 6-4.

Next, Carolina took on Middle Tennessee in singles. When all was said and done, the Gamecocks notched wins in four of the six matches. Martins, Folland and Rohrabacher finished off their opponents in straight sets, while Templeton used a third set tiebreak to come out on top.

South Carolina concluded play on Saturday with a doubles contest against Middle Tennessee, where the Gamecocks were able to come away with two more wins. Martins and Chinellato topped Alory Pereira and Maria Zehnder, 6-3, while Folland and Rohrabacher downed Sarah Sediri and Costanza Maggazini, 6-2.

The Gamecocks wrap-up the South Carolina Fall Invitational on Sunday when they take on Winthrop in singles at 9 a.m.

And another good day to wrap things up

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091816aaa.html

The Gamecock women’s tennis team cruised its way to winning five out of six singles matches against Winthrop to close out the South Carolina Fall Invitational on Sunday. Carolina’s Ingrid Gamarra Martins was named the top player in the tournament based on points after going 4-0 in doubles and 2-1 in singles.

“We were a little disappointed with the first day even though we saw some good things, but I think we got better and better each day,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “I was really impressed with a couple of our girls.”

Brigit Folland and Rachel Rohrabacher finished the weekend with another win to put them both at 3-0 on the weekend in singles action. As a doubles team, the pair went 1-1.

“I think Brigit and Rachel are playing some of the best tennis I’ve seen, which is a real good sign,” said Epley. “Rachel was extraordinary in singles and doubles, and today was the best I’ve seen Brigit play in terms of bringing her whole game together.”

The Gamecocks got another solid performance from Martins as she took down Winthrop’s top player, Lauren Proctor, 7-6 (3), 6-1. In the end, Martins was tabbed the top player for the weekend based on points. Alison Mills also had a strong showing Sunday as she defeated Nida Kamal, 6-4, 7-5. Silvia Chinellato, Carolina’s newest addition, collected her first collegiate singles win by topping Alysa Mourad, 6-3, 6-2.

Clines gets trophies in both singles and doubles

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092516aac.html

The South Carolina women’s tennis team is headed back to Columbia with two tournament titles in tow after a successful weekend at the UVA Invitational. Hadley Berg and Paige Cline combined to capture a doubles title, while Cline emerged as the top player in her singles draw.

“Overall, it was a very strong tournament for Paige in singles,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “She played a great finals match and she’s continuing to get better and better. Hadley and Paige played some of the best doubles that I’ve seen them play. There were a number of positive things that we saw, but we also have some things to work on and we need some girls to take that next step forward.”

The first part of the final day at the UVA Invitational saw the Gamecocks compete in two doubles finals matches. Berg and Cline captured Carolina’s first title of the fall when they topped Chloe Gullickson and Cassie Mercer of UVA. Rachel Rohrabacher and Silvia Chinellato fell in their draw’s final match. In the Blue draw consolation bracket, Hannah Templeton and Alison Mills picked up a win over a duo from Marshall.

Due to inclement weather and players and teams withdrawing, Sunday’s singles brackets were changed. However, Paige Cline’s match was not affected by the alterations and she fought hard to collect a three-set victory over Old Dominion’s Holly Hutchinson. Also playing finals matches on Sunday were Berg and Chinellato. Both dropped their respective matches. In all, the Gamecocks had three of the eight spots in finals play.

Sorry didn't keep up with things this week - we were out in Pacific Palisades, CA for the ITA All-America Championships and had a good performance overall.

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...100816aaa.html

The Gamecock women’s tennis team closed out play at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships with doubles action in the main draw consolation quarterfinals on Saturday. Hadley Berg and Paige Cline were downed by Oklahoma State’s Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic, 8-2.

“Overall, there were a lot of positives to take from this tournament,” said assistant coach Jeff Nevolo. “We competed well at one of the premier college tennis tournaments in the country. We’re excited to get back to work this coming week.”
Despite coming away with no titles, Carolina was able to accomplish some things that have not been done by the program in quite some time. Ingrid Gamarra Martins’ appearance in the singles main draw round of 16 marked the first time that a Gamecock has gotten that far since 1999. Additionally, Berg and Cline’s inclusion in the doubles main draw is the first time since 2000 (Katarina Markovski/Jennifer Radman).

The Gamecocks will get back on the court when they head to the ITA Carolina Regionals, which is set to run from Friday, Oct. 20 to Sunday, Oct. 22.

Back closer to home for the ITA Regionals in Chapel Hill NC

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...101916aac.html

The Gamecock women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament, which is being hosted by the University of North Carolina, is set to run from Thursday, Oct. 20 through Monday, Oct. 24 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

“We always love the regional tournament because it’s a great opportunity to see how far we’ve progressed with fall training,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “It will also give us an indication as to where we will be at the beginning of the spring season. I’m looking forward to seeing how we stack up against some other great teams in the region. “

Eight Gamecocks are set to compete in the event, including freshman Mia Horvit, who will make her collegiate debut this weekend. Thursday’s schedule is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. with qualifying singles matches. Carolina’s lone representative in that draw is Alison Mills, who takes on Campbell’s Alex Nicoara in the first round. With two wins Thursday, Mills would qualify for the main draw.

Following singles play in the morning, the afternoon will feature two rounds of main draw doubles. Carolina’s doubles pairings for the tournament will be Silvia Chinellato/Ingrid Gammara Martins, Caroline Dailey/Mia Horvit, Hadley Berg/Brigit Folland and Alison Mills/Hannah Templeton. So far this fall, Chinellato and Martins are 2-0 as a duo, while Mills and Templeton have combined for a 3-4 mark. The other two tandems have not yet played together this fall. However, Berg and Folland played together on five occasions last fall and went 4-1.

A more complete schedule of events will be updated on this page once it becomes available. Stay tuned to Twitter (@GamecockWTennis) and GamecocksOnline.com for updates throughout the weekend.

Ended up with Dailey and Horvit reaching the doubles finals and losing a close one

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...102416aaa.html

The Gamecock women's tennis team closed out play at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Monday morning in Chapel Hill. The doubles team of senior Caroline Dailey and freshman Mia Horvit fell in a thrilling, three-set title match to Duke's Ellyse Hamlin and Samantha Harris.

"We started a bit off today but hung around and kicked it into gear at the end of the second set," said head coach Kevin Epley. "We carried it over into the tiebreaker and it looked like we were going to run away with it, but we let up at some key times."

Hamlin and Harris grabbed an early stranglehold on the match when they captured the first set by a score of 6-3. However, Dailey and Horvit battled back to earn a 7-5 second set victory, forcing a decisive third set tiebreaker that saw Duke's duo grind out a 10-8 win after Carolina took an early 4-1 lead in the ten-point tiebreak. Despite the defeat, Epley is optimistic about the tandem moving forward, particularly because this is the first weekend the two have competed together at a tournament.

"Overall, it was a great tournament for Mia and Caroline," said Epley. "They have shown that they can play great doubles together, so we're looking forward to seeing them compete again soon."

Here, there and everywhere this weekend as we have participants in tournaments in both Los Angeles and Flushing, NY. Recapping the action so far:

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...110416aag.html

The Carolina women’s tennis team was outstanding in singles play once again on the second day of action at the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational on Friday. By the end of the evening, four Gamecocks had cemented their place in the quarterfinals.

“We started very slow with doubles today but picked it up significantly in the afternoon singles matches,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “We fought hard to come through some tough three-setters and are entering tomorrow with four in the quarterfinals. We expect a competitive day on Saturday and we’re looking forward to some tough matches to round out the fall season.”

Friday’s slate began with doubles play. Hadley Berg and Brigit Folland fell to Southern California’s duo of Katz and Westby, while Caroline Dailey and Mia Horvit opened with a win over Nuno and Portalatin of Cal State Fullerton before dropping their quarterfinal match to Northwestern’s Doshi and Rooney. On the consolation side of things, Alison Mills and Hannah Templeton took down UTEP’s Bennett and Visscher.

The Gamecocks closed out the day with one round of singles. Dailey, Berg, Horvit and Silvia Chinellato each advanced to the quarterfinals with victories. Templeton’s run ended with a loss to Fresno State’s Katerina Stloukalova. In the consolation bracket, Mills fell to Savannah Ware of BYU.

Saturday’s schedule will see Carolina begin with singles at 12:30 p.m. ET. The full schedule, as well as draws, can be found via the link here -

Carolina women’s tennis’ Ingrid Gamarra Martins finished off her second day of action at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Friday afternoon. She took down Nevada’s Claudia Herrero in the consolation round of 16.

“It’s always great to advance, especially at a tournament of this caliber,” said assistant coach Jeff Nevolo. “Ingrid did a nice job closing out the match in the third set. We have another great opportunity tomorrow for us here in NYC.”

Herrero opened up with a 6-1 first set win, but Martins battled back to secure a 6-4 triumph in the second set. In the critical third and final set, she cruised to a 6-1 win to take the match. Martins will now turn her attention to a Saturday consolation quarterfinals match against North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila. The time for that contest has not yet become available. With a win in that match, Martins would then play one more round on Saturday.

Serving up 2017 on the road at Furman

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...011317aad.html

The 16th-ranked South Carolina women's tennis team opens its 2017 season with a road match Sunday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. The Gamecocks will travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on the Furman Paladins at the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center.

"We may have the strongest schedule in the nation. We really want to get a read on where we stand after a long break and against a strong Furman team," said head coach Kevin Epley about this weekend's matchup. "We feel like we have some unfinished business from last year and are anxious to get wrapped up in competition again."

Carolina finished last season ranked No. 17 after going 19-8 overall and hosting NCAA regionals for the first time since 2002.

Six of the Gamecocks' singles players will start the season ranked, the most in program history. Ingrid Gamarra Martins headlines the Gamecocks ranked No. 16 after finishing her freshman campaign with four ranked victories and a 23-11 singles record. Three underclasswomen, freshmen Mia Horvit (No. 62) and Silvia Chinellato (No. 100), and sophomore Paige Cline (No. 72.) also made the list of ranked singles. Seniors Brigit Folland and Caroline Dailey close out the rankings with Folland at No. 122 and Dailey tied at No. 125.

QUICK HITS: FURMAN

  • The Paladins went 15-9 in the 2016 season and won the Southern Conference regular season championship with a 7-0 mark in league play.
  • Furman returned five players from last season.
  • Senior Ansley Speaks was named the 2016 Southern Conference Player of the Year.
  • Head coach Adam Herendeen enters his second season with the Paladins
