http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092916aab.html

The Gamecock men’s tennis team is set to compete in the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational in Belton, S.C. this weekend, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2. The event will feature players from eight in-state schools, including Clemson, Furman, Wofford, Citadel, Presbyterian, Anderson, Coastal Carolina, Winthrop and Lander. Matches will be held at the Belton Tennis Center, Leda Poore Park and Belton-Honea Path High School.

"We look forward to and take pride in this tournament every year," said head coach Josh Goffi. "It is put on in memory of 'Big Jim' Russell, one of the most recognized figures in South Carolina tennis history. Hopefully the boys can continue to impove with every match they play this weekend."

South Carolina will be traveling three players to the tournament. Wood Benton, Scotty Cameron and Sam Swank are all slotted to compete this weekend. The tournament format will feature two singles flights and one doubles flight. At the conclusion of the weekend, one player or coach will be presented the Big Jim Russell Award, which is given to the person who is selected by the tournament committee and coaches to have best represented a combination of sportsmanship, passion and play.

Action on Friday is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. with one round of doubles, followed by a round of singles. On Saturday, play is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. with two rounds of doubles before two rounds of singles. On Sunday, the third and final day of the tournament, matches will start at 8 a.m. with one round of doubles, followed by two rounds of singles.

Last fall at the South Carolina Collegiate Invite, the Gamecocks won both the singles and doubles titles. Thomas Mayronne defeated teammate Andrew Schafer in the singles final, while Mayronne and Schafer took down fellow Gamecocks Dennis and Swank in the doubles final.

There will be no live scoring or video available for this weekend’s tournament. You can receive updates via Twitter (@GamecockMTennis) or GamecocksOnline.com.

Cameron advances to the finals today in his singles flight

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...100116aad.html

The Gamecock men’s tennis team wrapped up its second day of action at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational with one player set to play in his first career finals match on Sunday. As a doubles team, the duo opened with a quarterfinals win before coming up short in the semifinals.

Sunday, the third and final day of the tournament, will feature Cameron’s finals match in addition to consolation matches for Benton and Swank. Action is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

Cameron left the competition dazed and confused, winning his flight, while Benton & Swank overcame bad times in the quarterfinals to have a good time winning their consolation matches

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...100216aaa.html

BELTON, S.C. – Freshman Scotty Cameron highlighted the third and final day at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational for the Gamecocks on Sunday. The Mount Pleasant, S.C. native collected the Flight B singles title with a win over Lander’s David Korsten.

Cameron battled back from a first set loss to take down Korsten, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 to capture his first career collegiate singles title. In the Flight A draw, Wood Benton cruised past Winthrop’s Gabriel Dias, 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation final. Sam Swank’s consolation match did not finish due to his opponent defaulting.

Cameron now carries a 5-1 record in singles through the first two weekends of the fall season, while Swank sits at 5-2. Benton bounced back from an 0-2 outing at the Southern Intercollegiates to go 3-1 this weekend in Belton.

Friedrich and O'Keefe travel over the hills and far away to Tulsa for the ITA Men’s All-American Championships

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...100216aab.html

Gamecock men’s tennis juniors Gabriel Friedrich and Harrison O’Keefe are set to begin their journey at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa this week. O’Keefe will be in action starting Monday, while Friedrich will play his first match on Thursday.

“This is the biggest event in the fall for college tennis and the best of the best will be there,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “Year in and year out, the level of this draw is the same as an ATP Challenger event, so it’s a great tournament for guys in college to prove to themselves that they have the ability to compete at a high level.

“I’m excited for Harrison and Gabriel to be in the mix out there in Tulsa. It’s important for them to see that they are every bit as good as anyone in the draw.”

O’Keefe, ranked No. 96 in the ITA preseason rankings, will be the first to get underway with a qualifying singles match on Monday, Oct. 2. Friedrich, by virtue of his No. 30 ITA preseason ranking, was an automatic selection for the main draw, which begins on Thursday, Oct. 6. Additionally, as doubles tandem, the duo is ranked No. 16, placing them in the main draw, which also begins on Thursday. Specific match times and opponents are still to be determined.

This week’s participation at the ITA All-American Championships is the first since 2014, when Andrew Adams was the No. 30 seed in the main draw. That year, he battled back from an opening round loss and worked his way back to the consolation quarterfinals.

Stay tuned to the team’s Twitter (@GamecockMTennis) and GamecocksOnline.com for updates throughout the week. Free live streaming will be available for O’Keefe’s qualifying singles match. All main draw matches will be streamed through FloTennis.com and will have a fee associated with it. Links for both streaming options are available on the tournament page.

Yancey Dennis (no relation to The Yancey afaik) takes the title in his draw

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...100916aac.html

Three Gamecocks wrapped up play at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Sunday. Yancy Dennis topped teammate Thomas Mayronne to capture the DII singles championship, his first career collegiate title.

Thomas and Yancy competed their hearts out in a very tricky dynamic in their match against each other today. We are very happy with the way we finished strong.”

After Dennis and Mayronne posted two wins apiece on Saturday, it set up a Sunday showdown between the two Gamecocks, where Dennis was able to come away with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Despite the loss, Mayronne has been very strong for Carolina this fall. He finished the weekend 3-1 and is now 6-2 overall this fall. Following a tough first two days in singles, Schafer was strong on the final day of the tournament, defeating Georgia’s Robert Loeb 6-2, 6-4. In doubles, Mayronne and Schafer downed Florida State’s duo of Rana Bhullar and Alex Knaff, 8-3.

The Gamecocks will be back in action this coming weekend at the ITA Carolina Regionals in Cary, N.C.

The South Carolina men’s tennis team looked strong in the first two rounds of singles play at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Friday at the Cary Tennis Park. Five Gamecocks reached the round of 32 after posting two wins apiece.

“There were a lot of nerves at the start of the day and, for the most part, the guys played through them and ended up playing some quality tennis,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “We will be looking for the guys to settle and keep building throughout the tournament from day to day.”

In the 128-player draw, just 32 would be left standing at the conclusion of action on Friday. Harrison O’Keefe, Yancy Dennis, Wood Benton, Gabriel Friedrich and Thomas Mayronne were the Gamecocks to make the cut. O’Keefe, Dennis and Friedrich posted straight-set wins, while Benton and Mayronne were resilient in their three-set victories.

Guaranteed to have a Gamecock in the singles finals as Friedrich and Mayronne face each other in the semis

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...101616aab.html

For the first time since 2009, a Gamecock will be featured in the singles title match at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. Gabriel Friedrich and Thomas Mayronne gutted out two more wins apiece on Sunday, setting up a semifinal match between the two teammates on Monday.

“We got better today and I’m very proud of all of our guys that took the court and battled,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “Regardless of result, we left it all out there.”

In Friedrich’s first match of the day, he cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Winthrop’s Diego Quiroz. In the quarterfinals, the junior overcame an opening set loss to capture a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Bo Boyden of North Carolina. Mayronne’s road to the semifinals was a little more eventful. The Monroe, La. native battled to earn two three-set triumphs, the latter of which came against the 10th-ranked player in the country, North Carolina’s Ronnie Schneider.

“Gabriel stepped up and took care of business against a very dangerous player from North Carolina,” said Goffi. “Thomas took down a very highly-ranked player who is one of the toughest outs in college tennis today by being an even tougher out. He was an absolute warrior today and proved what it is to be a Gamecock.”

Also competing in the round of 16 singles, but falling in their matches, was Harrison O’Keefe and Yancy Dennis. O’Keefe drop his contest to the tournament’s top seed, Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-3. Dennis captured a first set victory over Duke’s Nicolas Alvarez, but the 14th-ranked player in the nation pushed back and ultimately took down Dennis 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

“Yancy raised his level and put himself in position to win against one of the best players in college tennis,” said Goffi. “He left his heart on the court today but came up a little short.”

Wrapping up Sunday’s slate was the doubles round of 16. Mayronne and Andrew Schafer toppled Furman’s Jake Munns and Adam Steryous 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7). The Gamecock duo will play in the doubles quarterfinals on Monday. With a win in that contest, they would play a semifinal match after that.

Friedrich moves on to the finals today

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...101716aac.html

In a semifinal battle between two Gamecocks on Monday, Gabriel Friedrich topped teammate Thomas Mayronne 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the title match at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships. It is the first time since 2009 that a Gamecock has been featured in the tournament’s finale. Diego Cubas reached the final that year, but ultimately fell in three sets.

The top seed in the tournament, Wake Forest’s Skander Mansouri, awaits Friedrich on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Mansouri’s path to the final saw him earn straight-set victories over each of the five opponents he faced, including Carolina’s Harrison O’Keefe. Friedrich needed three sets to come out victorious on just one occasion, against North Carolina’s Bo Boyden. The Porto Alegre, Brazil native rallied after an opening set loss to capture the match 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Also on tap Monday was a doubles quarterfinals match, featuring Mayronne and Andrew Schafer. After a strong run the last few days, the duo could not get past the team of Robert Kelly and Josh Peck from North Carolina.

Stay tuned to Twitter (@GamecockMTennis) and GamecocksOnline.com for updates on tomorrow’s finals match. There is no live stats or video.

Friedrich falls in the finals but still an impressive showing

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...101816aaa.html

Gamecock men’s tennis junior Gabriel Friedrich had his run at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships end in the singles title match on Tuesday. The Porto Alegre, Brazil native fell to the tournament’s top seed, Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest, 6-4, 6-4.

“I’m really happy for Gabe making it through the draw and to the final,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “That’s definitely difficult to do in our region. It was a tough matchup today against Mansouri. Our goal was to jump all over his second serve to break his rhythm and stay on the baseline, in order to keep him from controlling the match. Gabe had a few openings today but he couldn’t take advantage of them. Credit goes to Mansouri for sure.”

Friedrich was not the only Gamecock to impress the last several days. Junior Thomas Mayronne continued his strong fall campaign by reaching the singles semifinals before falling to Friedrich. Sophomore Yancy Dennis came into the tournament sporting a 6-1 record this fall, including a DII singles title at the Georgia Tech Invite last weekend. Dennis reached the round of 16 this week before dropping his match to Duke’s Nicolas Alvarez, the 14th-ranked player in the nation.

“Overall, it was a great week for the whole team and I’m very proud of the heart that our guys showed,” said Goffi. “Gabriel, Yancy and Thomas each had a breakthrough tournament in their own right, and that’s very important for us for the spring season.”

Carolina gets back on the court when it heads to the Charlotte Invitational next weekend. The tournament kicks off on Friday, Oct. 28 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 30.

Also pulling double duty this weekend, at both Tuscaloosa and Athens

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...110416aab.html

The Gamecock men’s tennis team closed out its first day at both the SEC Coaches Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga. on Friday.

At the SEC Coaches Classic, in singles, Gabriel Friedrich and Harrison O’Keefe each posted a win to move on to their draw’s quarterfinals. Thomas Mayronne and Andrew Schafer dropped their openers but they will have a chance to redeem themselves in the consolation bracket. In doubles, the teams of Friedrich and O’Keefe and Mayronne and Schafer both went 1-1 on the day, and will play in their respective draw’s third place match on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Following just the one round of doubles, the Gamecocks will play two rounds of singles.

“It’s great for the guys to compete against SEC opponents again,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “There’s a different type of pressure and intensity that comes with SEC play, and that’s why anyone can beat anyone in the draw and it showed today. We struggled to hold our focus throughout some of our matches and we paid for it. The boys are playing good tennis right now, but we are looking for the whole squad to play complete matches in singles and doubles tomorrow.”

Over at the Bulldog Scramble, freshman Scotty Cameron was solid in going 2-0 on the day in singles. Alex Fennell went 1-1, while Sam Swank finished 0-2. In doubles, Fennell and Swank fell to Georgia’s Duncan and Reinberg. Day two action is set to begin at 10 a.m. with two rounds of doubles, followed by one round of singles in the afternoon.

“We finished strong in the afternoon and I think the guys made good adjustments form the morning,” said assistant coach Kyle Bailey. “Hopefully we can keep building on each match and start off well tomorrow with doubles.”

Let's play two! Starting off the spring season with a doubleheader at home against The Citadel

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...011917aaa.html

The South Carolina men's tennis team opens its 2017 season with a doubleheader at home Friday, Jan. 20. The Gamecocks will face off against the Citadel at the Carolina Tennis Center once at 2:30 p.m. and again at 6 p.m.

"The team has put in a great training block since we've been back from break and they're chomping at the bit to compete. We are all looking forward to getting this season going," said head coach Josh Goffi. "Since coach Chuck Kriese took over the reins at the Citadel the team has improved every year. They train hard and compete hard, which is why we scheduled them for our season opener. This matchup will give us a good measurement of where we are at moving into next weekend"

As a team, the Gamecocks received votes in the initial ITA top-25 rankings to start the season. Head coach Josh Goffi looks to build on a strong fall campaign with a squad that finished last season ranked No. 45.

Sophomore Yancy Dennis will begin the season ranked No. 75 in the nation after posting a 9-2 record in the fall, including winning the DII singles championship at the Georgia Tech Invitational, his first career collegiate title. Redshirt junior Gabriel Friedrich enters the spring ranked 76th in the nation after going 12-5 in the fall. He finished his redshirt sophomore campaign ranked No. 49 with a 21-18 record.

The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 21, but was rescheduled due to incoming inclement weather.

Scouting The Citadel

  • The Citadel is 0-4 entering Saturday's action after falling to Georgia Southern, Clemson and a pair of losses to NC State.
  • The Bulldogs reached nine wins in the 2016 season, the most since 2008 when they posted 15 wins in one season.
  • Head coach Chuck Kriese is in his third season with the Bulldogs.
  • Sophomores Michael Anzalone and Matthew Henson return after tying for most singles wins for a freshman with a total of 11 wins.

South Carolina swept a doubleheader over The Citadel on Friday at the Carolina Tennis Center with strong play across the board. The Gamecocks (2-0) won both matches 7-0 after sweeping the doubles point.

The Gamecocks opened the doubleheader with a strong doubles showing.
