Default Re: New Phone: Apple vs Android

Until apple puts a microSD or other removal memory storage slot on their phones the answer will always be Android.

I know it doesn't seem like big deal to a lot of folks, but here's why it is.

First off, you can store your apps on the SD card. This allows you to keep the internal memory of your phone clear, which means faster operation.

Second, some of us have more that 32 GB of data. Sure you can get the iphone with more than 32 Gb, but that memory costs about $100 per 100 GB. Meanwhile, you can buy microSD cards for about $30-$50 per 128 GB.

So if you want to pay Apple a premium for something that cost less with other manufactures, Oh wait, that's Totally Apple's business model. Nevermind, carry on...

I had a Apple 5 at my previous job and I have a Galaxy S3 for my personal phone. I preferred the S3 because of its larger size and removable SIM card. I thought I was going to have to replace the S3, but and aftermarket battery made by Duracell solved all the issues I was having with that phone.

We'll see about a new phone when the S8 comes out.

Recently updagraded from an S4 to the Note7. I stayed with Android because of Showbox.

I think we should not compare Apples and android phones. Because both have their own incentives. As for as android concerns you can customize anything which iPhones didn't allow.

Default New Phone: Apple vs Android

I think feature wise they are pretty neck and neck - with it coming down to personal preference.

Security wise the main advantage Apple has is it can push security updates straight to the users in a matter of days. With Andriod, google publishes updates, then the manufacturers and eventually the carriers have to push the updates. This can takes weeks or months. Or never for the lower cost phones.

I think google is trying to address this with the Pixel, but they cannot force it on other manufacturers.

The prices of these devices have been outrageous for a while, so officially getting to the 1k mark isn't a big surprise.

Second. I made it a day on the Samsung S7 Edge. It was a beautiful phone. Took amazing pictures. Fast. Had some functionality that I wish the iPhone had. But, after being on the iPhone for 5 years, I simply couldn't get used to it (yeah, I only gave it a day...). Even sending text messages was different and all my muscle memory is geared for the iPhone.

I do believe the S7 was the superior device though, by far, and recommend a Samsung phone to anyone.

The main reason I tried to make the jump is that Google Maps in Android has a function that mutes the map during phone calls. Google Maps in iPhone, frustratingly does not. Your only option is to mute it altogether.

Especially considering those things are only built to last 1-2 years, 3 at the most. imo they're absolutely not worth the money on release, yet people will line up for them...

Isn't the lining up thing over by now? For real.

It just so happens that our upgrades work out that we're always a generation behind. I like it that since the bugs have been worked out by then, it's still a significant upgrade from my previous phone, and the price is way cheaper.

This!!! Finally an apple user that realizes that both phones are amazing, and its a bigger matter of comfort and preference. I think the iPhone is fantastic, but I can't get used to it, plus I want removable battery and additional storage so I'm dragging my note4 around still.

What nobody can get away from, is that both platforms are designed to be disposable. Forced obsolescence within 2-3 years with forced software updates to ensure that demand constantly cycles through to create the necessity for more supply. The industry has convinced all of first world civilization that purchasing a $700+ device every other year is not only necessary, but desirable. So much so, that we line up outside the store hours ahead of time like foolish sheep just to let the industry stick it to us. Goodyear made a tire back in the 60's that would literally last forever, but they won't sell it because they'd be out of business...and I get that. Problem is that my tires on my car outlast my smartphone, that's messed up. Fooking crazy that we allow this to continue.

I'm Still using my iPhone 5S. I have resisted the temptation to upgrade as it does everything I need it to. This thing is almost 4 years old and runs just fine. The only reason I see to upgrade is to get a better camera. I will probably upgrade this fall. But I cannot see myself dropping a grand. I will probably go for either the iPhone 7 or 7S.

I am with you on using the iPhone 5. I have one for work. My personal is an android and it has to be close to 10 years old. My phones run fine and I just don't see the need to upgrade. I was recently blown away just by the IOS update and have much "newer" it made my iPhone 5. I honestly don't get the fascination with newer is better. I also don't like big phones but smaller ones so older iPhones work better for me.

I also want a removable battery, the battery in my Edge 6 has degraded to the point that I essentially have an expensive land line. The only new phone that I have found with a removable battery is the LG V20. The big screen, quad DAC, removable battery and expandable memory are pretty enticing.

Had an iPhone for two years until it started failing (planned obsolescence). Have had Samsung Galaxy Note for 3+ years. Love the ability to upgrade memory with a miniSD and can replace the battery with a new one.

I think that Anker makes the best portable batteries and cables around. Being on the go a lot with multiple devices I use one of their 4 port cig chargers and this fantastic battery: https://www.anker.com/products/A1271012. Has enough power for me to charge 2 phones and a tablet quickly.
