I say no. Not a smart team move to turn our practices into personal NBA tryouts for someone who hasnít played a game here yet.

It's a good idea if the NCAA doesn't give him his eligibility, which is a possibility.

Why would it be a good idea? And for whom?

On the other hand they may see another player they like, like a Chris Silva, for instance.

If an NBA team were to come to practice and see something they like from Bowen he could leave after a year right? As for Silva he doesn't stay on the floor long enough and still needs to develop a midrange but I could see him as a Draymond type player at the next level

2. Has anyone heard anything new about the FBI case?

With those questions, I say go for it. Get the NCAA to clear him before he hits the court but there's plenty of time with the transfer rule. I don't see the harm, either, in asking for a waiver to play in the Fall.

The optics depend on who's looking. From my standpoint as a fan, I take this that Martin and co. either 1) feel entirely confident that Lamont was just a rogue coach and nothing will touch the program because of it or 2) It's still up in the air, so f*** it. Just go for it. I'm cool with either approach. This is, however, putting a lot of faith in the compliance office but whatever.

I'd put the odd at 30% he'll never see the court, though.
The NCAA hasn't ruled yet, and IMO they may not even have anything to rule on. It could be that all Bowen is, is a typical transfer from another program, and like typical transfers he has to sit out two semesters before being eligible to play. Anything that changes that may require a waiver being submitted by USC.

Evans' issues did not tie USC into the FBI probe. Evans got himself caught while employed at Oklahoma State. USC was never a target of investigation by the FBI.

The FBI has subpoena power, something the NCAA has never had. USC was subpoena'd in Sept. 2017 when the complaints were made public by the FBI. They provided the FBI with a ton of stuff and cooperated 100%. This is old news now.

USC hired their own law firm and conducted their own investigation concerning the matter, and have stood ready to further assist and cooperate with either the FBI or the NCAA should any new questions arise.

Louisville's case is more serious. Theirs involved actual money changing hands, not just talk about it. The FBI complaint stated that Bowen's father took money. The FBI notified all universities that were under investigation - which did not include USC - to hold off on initiating their own internal investigations until after the FBI concluded theirs. So Louisville ruled Bowen indefinitely suspended from participating with the program, to prevent any NCAA eligibility backlash. They didn't want games revoked after the fact for playing an ineligible player.

Apparently, the FBI ultimately cleared Bowen:

https://www.courier-journal.com/stor...ion/825604001/

https://www.sbnation.com/2017/11/2/1...-investigation

This took place back in November. Louisville was also cleared to initiate their own internal investigation into the issue. In late November, they chose to not reinstate Bowen to the team, and instead he could stay on scholarship and complete his degree, but he would not be a part of the team moving forward:

https://www.sbnation.com/college-bas...-play-transfer

They also stated they would release Bowen to transfer to any school he chose to. Apparently he chose to come to USC. Per CFM, Bowen had a relationship with asst. coach Chuck Martin while Martin was at Indiana, and Martin recruited him for UI. And that's how Bowen ended up coming to USC.

The big question now: as stated above, this becomes sort of like the Cam Newton situation at Auburn. Bowen's attorney is saying that if any $$ was paid to Bowen Sr., Brian knew nothing about it, and has had no benefit from it. The NCAA made a change to their rules post-Cam to make the parents of prospects/student-athletes considered as "agents", if said parents attempt to profit financially from their sons or daughter's talents.

So, if the FBI didn't find anything, will the NCAA? If it can't be shown that Bowen gained financially nor had any direct involvement in the money being paid - he didn't talk to anyone or accept any payments personally - for him to go play for Louisville, will the NCAA punish him for leaving Louisville and playing for someone else?

Zion is the #3 ranked Small Forward for the 2018 class, per 247 Sports. The #1 and #2 ranked SFs both committed to Duke. But, they are Duke.

Provided that Bowen is ruled eligible and plays for us: he is a SF from the 2017 class. Would Williamson want to come play for a program that already just got a 5* elite player, for the same position he'll play? He's going to be a one-year guy, so would he care to share prime time with someone else, or would he care to play alongside Bowen? Perhaps both or one of them have well-rounded skill-sets that they could play as a Wing/Guard, like Sin did for much of his career, or can rebound and be a presence in the paint and play some 4, like Carrera did.

I guess either way, it's been done before under CFM, so it can be done again. Also, Silva is a definite 4 moreso than a 5...

like you said i wouldnt worry about the positions, theyre not so similar that they cant coexist. play both at forward or put bowen at shooting guard.

Frank said Bowen could play the 1, 2 or 3. I think heíd be a PJ-esque 1.

Thanks for the excellent information and clarifications, Conway.

I don't see a problem with Zion and Bowen playing together - Zion is listed as a SF because he is not tall, but he is more of a PF in the way he plays. Bowen has more perimeter skills with his passing and shooting. They would complement each other well with Bowen's passing setting up some rim-rattling dunks.

Provided there are no eligibility issues, I don't see Bowen turning pro without playing a year, at least. He would improve his stock by showing what he can do against live competition.

There was a lot of talk about Sin going early also, but he was not ready after his Freshman year, then was hurt both his Sophomore and Junior years. He was smart to come back and show what he could do as a Senior.

Then the same thing with Dozier - and he succumber to the pressure and left too early, IMO.

Returning Felder and Bowen to next year's team would be pretty big, assuming Silva comes back for his senior campaign.

Zion isn't even a factor at this point. He's not coming here.

Do y'all think that Wiley at Auburn being ruled eligible for next year helps our case with Bowen? Seems to me that it should set precedent, but it still is the NCAA we're dealing with.

“He’s an unbelievable player. I watched him play in high school. I watched him play summer ball. He can actually play a little point guard, if he wanted to. He’s multi-skilled, great team player. He’s not one of those guys who just plays for himself. He plays for his teammates. He’s humble, very talented. Offensively, very gifted. Can really shoot, can really pass. … He’s a very, very talented player. The best part of the whole thing is how humble he is and how much he wants to be a teammate. It’s not about, let me take a platform, to make myself look good. He just wants to be a part of something. I know that he’ll fit in great in the locker room.”
