Default Re: Waiver for Te'a Cooper has been submitted

Twitter thread from The State’s Greg Hadley:

“Some context for the NCAA's delay in deciding on Te'a Cooper's hardship waiver for the #Gamecocks: The case most compared to Cooper is Jessica Shepard and Notre Dame, who got a similar waiver at the beginning of the year (thread)”

“According to the South Bend Tribune, Shepard's waiver was submitted on Sept. 1. It was approved on Nov. 2, two months later. Links are ndsmcobserver.com/2017/11/jessic… and”

“On Sept. 5, Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said she expected the NCAA to reach a decision in a "week or two," pretty much exactly what Dawn Staley said she expected the timeline to be for Cooper's waiver ndinsider.com/basketball/wom… and”

“So here are some takeaways from that:
1. The NCAA (probably) isn't targeting South Carolina with a slow decision
2. If two months pass before Cooper's waiver is approved (if it is), we're almost in March
3. Any timeline you've heard is basically meaningless”

Dawn Staley choosing to delay submitting the waiver request until after the fall term was probably a bad idea.....

I think she waited until her grades were in for the fall semester. if she's available for the 2nd half of the conference season and the NCAAT, that's ok.

But would Te'a want to lose another year of eligibility to only be able to play in just the conference and NCAAT? Cause she will have to hit the ground running. We both know Dawn will shorten the rotation in a heatbeat around tourney time.

Compared to Te'a staying in college for 6 seasons, when she was a high 5* rated player? This is what Coach Staley was talking about in the article by The State: it's very difficult for a player in ANY college sport to stay years after acquiring their college degree, and just play a sport, when there's opportunities to make $$ at the next level playing it. Coach Staley doesn't expect Cooper to want to do that - probably because she's already talked to Cooper behind the scenes, and knows that for a fact.

The comments being made are making it like Notre Dame got special consideration over what USC got regarding Cooper. But that's not true - if the NCAA responds to our request like they did for ND, then we'll hear something back from them around mid-February. The regular season ends on Feb. 25th, so its possible Te'a could be available for the final 3-4 SEC games - including the last one which would be against UT in Knoxville - the SECT, then the NCAAT. She could get a dozen or so games out of 2017-18, play one more season next season, and then call it.....

Ok, that's what I wanted to know. I figured Te'a had to be ok with it somewhat for them to wait this long to send the waiver. But two months to get a yes or no? Are they sending it through pony express??

It's not taking that long to get the message from A to B: the NCAA has already had the request for a while. It's just how long they are taking in reviewing the submittal, before deciding on an answer. I don't know what their staff size is, or how many such applications for waiver they get from all the programs, but I do know they've gotten a number all the way back to before the season began (like with ND). The NCAA likes to take their time....

Also, I'm just assuming that Te'a is OK with it. I'm sure if it was up to her - and Coach Staley - Te'a would prefer to be playing in games since the season opener. For whatever reason that I'm not privvy to because I'm just a fan, Staley chose to wait. IDK if as Cockhornleghorn stated above her grades had anything to do with it, or perhaps Staley thought it might help the waiver get approved to do so, but the NCAA would have to give us special consideration they didn't give Notre Dame, for Te'a to get cleared any faster than it has taken....

This is a little different from the clearinghouse that has screwed us over so many times. Or what would have happened if Rah was allowed to play second semester.

In this scenario, Te'a is already on campus and participating in practices, so she will be able to contribute immediately once she is cleared. No time required to get in shape, learn the plays, get to know her teammates, etc.

In Women's basketball, we are a blueblood. Just like Notre Dame, it is in the NCAA's best interest for us to be competitive and successful. So if it is a toss-up scenario, I think she gets the waiver.

We should be treated as a blue blood program, but we won’t be. Carolina is a Johnny come lately and when A’ja Wilson leaves we are going back to the pack. Carolina has not recruited like a blue blood program. The lack of instate prospects has hurt no doubt, but Staley’s lack of being able to draw big time HS players from out of state will be felt next season and beyond, barring some transfer wings and bigs coming into the program.

This year is not her fault. She fully expected to have Davis and Gray back. It’s unfortunate Bianca is injured and Spann has been slowed. But not landing an elite post after having Wilson and Coates is going to be felt. LaDazhia Williams is light years away from being an SEC upper level player, and she seems more comfortable shooting 3s than posting up.

Outside of PGs, this will be a roster of average talent next season. Cuevas, Cooper, Harris and Henderson will be the highest rated players on the team. All point guards.

At this rate, I doubt Cooper is cleared before Feb 1, if she gets it at all. The SEC is probably not going to help due to her transferring from Tennessee....the real blue blood program. Holly is kicking Dawns ass on the recruiting trail. Like it or not, that’s the facts.

Looks like Notre Dame (McGraw) is smarter than Dawn. They submitted request in September, approved in November. Dawn in her infinite wisdom waited until December to submit Cooper's waiver. And we wonder why no word yet. Blame it on the NCAA, but we shot ourselves on this one.

If Jennings goes pro, we are sunk. Williams, so far looks like she should have went to Savannah State. Maybe she will come around, but she has been the most disappointment.

What is puzzling in this recruiting class is why Nelson Odo, who is from Georgia,
went to a loaded UCONN roster, when she would probably have started day one here with Wilson gone. It was thought we lead the entire time for her services. Epic fail or just bad luck

Have you not read this thread? Dawn pretty much had to wait in order for her to get her grades up.

The 5 position isn't loaded at all actually. If Stevens turns pro this year Odo will be the only player to take over that position. Sometimes it's not just about starting immediately for players. I find it puzzling that fans are so quick to not TRUST THE PROCESS. We literally JUST started getting Top 10 recruits a few years ago. We just so happen to win a national championship in 9 years. Dawn being one the best point guards in the country in her 10 years JUST recruited the #1 PG in the country in this past class.

Not to mention Nikki just left last year when she probably had a lot of relationships with players that we didn't know about.

Am I the only one that remembers how far Dawn has taken this program and what she built and how we got there? TRUST THE PROCESS!

I think we've lost a ton of recruiting battles and I do think there is some question as to whether we are a Final Four caliber team next season.

But at the same time, Coach has signed five top 50 players in the past two classes and the players she has missed on have been to other top 10-15 programs.

It's not all bad by any stretch of the imagination. We will still be good next year and may be very good.
