I can see why Charleston and HH could be above Greenville. But Mauldin and Five Forks are just part of the urban sprawl outside of Greenville.
It looks like they took into account commute time, which I'm sure hurt Greenville and Charleston.

But is this just the city or the metro? Those lists are so flawed.

But a commute from Five Forks into Greenville will be much longer then from Greenville into Greenville. Just doesn't make sense.

Very true...yeah, I got no idea. I didn't know what Five Forks was until this article tbh.

The answer is Beaufort, but please don't tell anyone or we'll end up crowded like Charleston.

I'm bias to the lowcountry. If I'm not within 3 min of saltwater then I can't live there.

From what I remember it's a strip mall shopping center and some subdivisions about 1/2 hr. outside of Greenville. As far as I can tell it's not even an actual town or city. I may be wrong.

I've been out of Greenville for a fair number of years, but I grew up there...and I never heard of Five Forks. Is this a recent build up?

Honestly, I'm currently in Aiken, but hoping to retire somewhere back near Florence. I grew up in Marlboro County, but don't want back there (except to visit family) as it is just a very poor county with little to offer.

► Beaufort - nice, but too expensive for what I'm looking for. I'm also thinking of being at least a little ways away from the coast to hopefully avoid hurricanes, but we will see how that goes.

► Greenville - awesome area from my limited knowledge of it, but no closer to my aging parents than where I am in Aiken.

► Lexington - may be good as it is at least a little closer to my family, but I'd prefer moving a little farther, like maybe the other side of Columbia at least.

► Charleston/Goose Creek/Mount Pleasant/N. Charleston - stationed there several times and like the area. I just prefer to be somewhere a little more rural and away from the coast.

Ideally, I want a semi-low cost of living area that I can buy 10 acres of land and build a house on to grow old in. On a Federal Employees retirement I won't be able to afford the expensive areas like Beauford or Hilton Head. I'm also not looking to be in a city, but at the same time don't want to be over 20 minutes away from grocery stores, Home Depot, Lowes, etc..... so rural, but not anything too far from civilization, if that makes sense.

I'd recommend the gilbert area, although it's on the opposite side of Columbia from where I think you want to be. Lexington is growing fast.

Fort Mill area

Columbia and Aiken are in the conversation as well.
I grew up in Aiken and had to get out of there. It's gone downhill.

Actually Aiken is a fine place to live. I'd put it head and shoulders above North Augusta any day.

But Aiken is simply farther away from my aging parents than I want to be, so I'm trying to get closer.

Interesting. I worked in Aiken for a few months (while living in Columbia) and thought it was a pretty place for the most part. Not a lot to do there but I can see the appeal to living there if you're retired. The Alley downtown and the Wilcox are pretty awesome spots.
