According to one poster here, Steve Spurrier offered Blaylock the option of skipping high school altogether and that he will start day 1.

This is the first time we've offered someone this early isn't it? It kind of doesn't mean a whole lot. I don't think SOS is leaving any time soon, but I seriously doubt he'll be around by the time this kid gets here, and our entire staff is likely to look significantly different.

Maybe it's Spurrier's way of saying that he'll be here longer than 2-3 more years.

Do you know if Mookie's current incarceration play any part in us offering the Blaylock kids?

This is stupid. I understand the trends and this probably having more to do with show than trying to jump on him early, but I hate this. Offering a 13-14 year old kid has got to effect them in various ways--motivation to achieve in the classroom, pressure from parents/coaches to continue to play a sport they may not have the desire to do next year, an attachment of self-worth to a game.

If the NCAA actually wants to do something decent before they are extinct, they need to set low limits of age as to when a kid can get an offer.

Why not?

It's not a binding contract, it's his first offer.

Can't please some of you guys. Y'all bitch because we aren't active recruiting, then turn around and bitch when we target a guy that is already bigger and apparently more athletic than Al Harris Jr., who played a lot of snaps last year.

At what point does it get ridiculous though? Like you said, nothing is binding here, it's all for show. What about 6th grade? Maybe 4th?

The argument always comes back to how soccer is handled in Europe, but my issue is that we need to let the kids just be kids. If a kid really likes football when he's 12, and is really good, but wants to stop for whatever reason, how much pressure will this put on him?

In medicine too, I don't like the specialization of sports at an early age. There is too much emphasis on developing an athlete at the age of six than it is for the kids to enjoy the game, and to have freedom to do a variety of sports. It's a strong argument as to why there seems to be an increase in athletic injuries.

Just my two cents, I would like to see an age of say 16 at which point schools can 'offer' a kid.

The kid is not even in high school yet and coaches are already recruiting him. That's just wrong.

There is absolutely no point in offering a kid that won't even graduate until the current class that is coming in is gone.

AND, what's the point in offering a kid that is so far from college that by the time he graduates could not even play football anymore. Or he could not get any better between now and then and be a 3rd stringer.

What would we miss by offering him his first semester as a high school junior as opposed to now? Absolutely nothing. So no, this stuff should not be allowed.

It used to be that college coaches couldn't start contacting you until the start of your junior year.

Lebron James has said that his son is already being receiving letters from colleges. I think the kid is 8 or 9.

If you believe all things considering that there is a 50% chance or greater that you are looking at a 4-5* player, what's the harm in offering now and getting yourself in the kids good graces.

Probably just made this kid the coolest person in his damn school... he won't forget it.

You have just proven you may have no clue how cutthroat and intense recruiting has become. Nor do you seem to understand how the egos of these kids work. It has become a very good idea to be the first to make a kid feel wanted no matter how early you have to start.

We're not the only school to do this and it's something we've needed to do for quite a while IMO.

You only offer the really special 8th graders. It's clear to me at least, that this kid is very likely to be a high 4*/5* by the time he's a junior. Might as well make a big first impression.

I am not sure there that a 13/14 stands above the rest because he will be so superior when he is 18. There are some kids that mature much faster than others and it could be just a size difference.

One thing an early offer does is that it gives a person plenty of time to vet agents. LOL.
