Off to the coast to face the Chants

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...090816aag.html

The South Carolina men's soccer team (1-2-0) heads east for its first true road game of the season at Coastal Carolina (0-2-1) Friday night. The two teams will be squaring off for the fifth straight season.

"It'll be a big test. Coastal year in and year out has a wonderful team," said Head Coach Mark Berson. "They're well coached, and it'll be a really competitive game for us. The fact that it's on the road will also be a challenge. First official road game for our guys and we bring some pretty young guys out there. It should be a great game."

Last season, the Gamecocks knocked off the No. 11 Chanticleers 1-0 on Senior Night. The win marked just the second time in school history Carolina finished the regular season with a perfect record at home. Trygve Ellingstad scored the team's lone goal in the match.

The Gamecocks will continue to wear teal warmup shirts for the contest to help raise awareness for ovarian cancer.

SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA

The Chanticleers return 10 lettermen, including five starters, from a team that went 13-3-4 last season and finshed the year ranked No. 20 in the final NSCAA poll. They were voted the preseason favorites to win the Sun Belt Conference in 2016. Coastal is led by junior forward Frantzdy Pierrot, who was voted Sun Belt Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year alongside Hartwick’s Jamie O’Grady. CCU had four player’s named to the preseason all-conference team: Pierrot, junior midfielder Louis Dargent, senior defender Elis Bjornsson and senior defender Einar Einarsson. Coastal lost two road matches to start the year falling 2-1 at No. 17 Virginia and 2-1 at William & Mary. They recently played UAB to a 0-0 draw at home. The Chanticleers outshot the Blazers 27-9 in the match with 10 shots on goal.

Last non conference game tonight hosting Ga Southern

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091216aaa.html

South Carolina (1-3-0) returns home Tuesday night to face Georgia Southern (2-2-1) in its last nonconference game before entering conference play on the road Saturday at Florida Atlantic. It will be the Gamecocks last home match until Sept. 24.

"It's a great opportunity for us," said Head Coach Mark Berson. "Great to come back home. Our fans at home are unbelievable, so it's a great place for us to play. It's exciting to get back home again. Obviously we need to get on the winning ways here. Georgia Southern brings a very good team in here. They're off to one of their best starts in several years, so it'll be a big challenge for us."

Last season, Carolina downed GSU 4-2 in front of 3,735 fans at Stone Stadium. Koty Millard, Danny Deakin, Kevin Walker and Jeffrey Torda all found the back of the net for the Gamecocks.

SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN

The Eagles are led by junior forward Blake Wilson. He leads the team in points (6), goals (3), shots (13) and shots on goal (6). Wilson had a hat trick in the team's opening game vs. Houston Baptist, which was a 4-1 win. GSU's lineup features four different players with one goal each: Rasmus Juul, Emil Laursen, Sander Wang and Adam Abdellaoui. Goalkeeper Chase Herzog has 11 saves in four games played with a .647 save percentage. The Eagles scoring offense averages 1.4 goals per game (T-87 nationally). Tuesday night will be just the sixth meeting all-time between Carolina and Georgia Southern. The Gamecocks and Eagles first met on the pitch on October 20, 1982. South Carolina won 4-0.

Starting conference play down at FAU

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091616aac.html

South Carolina (2-3-0) hits the road this weekend for its opening match in Conference-USA play at Florida Atlantic (1-2-1). The Gamecocks, who have been C-USA members for men's soccer since 2005, have won two tournament titles and two regular season titles.

"FAU is off to a really good start this season," said Head Coach Mark Berson. "They've been very, very competitive in all their matches early in the year. It's important that we get off on a good foot. The most important thing is not really the competition. The most important thing is us improving. I think we still have a long way to go to be the type of team that we think we can be."

Last season, midfielder Danny Deakin led the Gamecocks to a 2-1 victory over the Owls after scoring both Carolina goals. South Carolina outshot FAU 18-10 in the match, including a 5-4 advantage in SOG. Goalkeeper William Pyle notched the win in the net after recording three saves.

In last season's conference opener, the Gamecocks tallied a 1-0 victory on the road at UAB. Asa Kryst scored the game-winner for South Carolina in the 55th minute of the match.

SCOUTING FAU

The Owls return 13 players from a squad that went 2-12-2 overall and 1-7 in conference play last season. As a team, FAU has totaled three goals, 42 shots and 17 shots on goal through four games. Junior forward Dylan Huber leads the team in shots (10) and shots on goal (4) this season. The owls have three players tied for the team lead in points with two: Jason Fitzgerald (1G), Elijah McDonald (1G) and Niko Gomez (1G). Goalkeeper Phillip Hitpass has logged 281:25 in three appearances with a 1-0-1 record, including one shutout. He has six saves on the year, good for a .667 save percentage. In FAU’s last outing on Sept. 4, the Owls played Wisconsin to a 1-1 draw. FAU finished the match with eight shots and four shots on goal. Hitpass logged two saves on three shots on goal by the Badgers. There were seven yellow cards in the match.

Tough match tonight at #18 Furman

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...091916aad.html

South Carolina (3-3-0) heads to Greenville, S.C. Tuesday evening for an instate matchup with No. 18 Furman (4-1-1). The Gamecocks will be playing their second consecutive road match after downing FAU 1-0 in Boca Raton, Fla. Saturday night.

"It'll be a great game," said Head Coach Mark Berson. "They have a good team, they're very well coached and it's a rematch of last year's NCAA first round game, which was as close as it could be. We know it'll be a really tough game especially up at their place."

Furman is led by Gamecock soccer legend Doug Allison, who played and coached at South Carolina under Berson. As a player, Allison was a four-year starter, earning first team All-America honors as a senior in 1987. He's the program's all-time leader in points with 158 (63G, 32A). He helped lead the Gamecocks to a 67-14-6 record, including three NCAA tournament appearances, as a player.

As a coach, Allison served as an assistant under Berson for four seasons (1991-94). He helped lead Carolina to a 59-18-7 record and three NCAA tournaments, including a national runner-up finish in 1993.

SCOUTING FURMAN

The Paladins are currently ranked No. 18 nationally by Soccer America and boast wins over two ranked opponents in No. 16 Kentucky and No. 23 FIU. Josiah Baker and Lewis Hawke lead Furman offensively, as Baker leads the team in points with seven (2G, 3A) and Hawke ranks second with five (2G, 1A). Goalkeeper Jonathan Smith was recently named the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week after posting consecutive shutouts in the net. The Columbia, S.C., native had four saves vs. Presbyterian and five saves vs. Kentucky.

Yes, a very impressive win! I was able to follow along online for the last 30 minutes or so and when it went to 2-0 with 9 minutes to go things finally seemed pretty confident, then 3-0 right at the end to put the cherry on top

Hosting Georgia State tonight

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092316aap.html

South Carolina (4-3-0) host Georgia State (5-3-0) at home Saturday night. The Gamecocks have won three-straight matches, including posting consecutive shutouts in their last two outings.

"Georgia State is a very good team" said Head Coach Mark Berson. "We play them often. We played them in the spring as well. They're an experienced team, and they've got a lot of very good players that can play at a high level. We know that we need to be ready to go."

Saturday night's match will be the team's Camper Reunion / Youth Soccer Night. All Gamecock soccer campers that wear their camp shirt or any youth soccer club members that wear their jerseys receive $1 admission as well as everyone in their group.

Carolina and Georgia State last met on September 30, 2014 in Columbia. The Gamecocks prevailed 2-1 over the Panthers. South Carolina leads the all-time series with GSU 10-0-0, including a perfect 8-0-0 record against the Panthers at home.

SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE

In 2015, Georgia State went 9-8-1 in and finished second in the Sun Belt Conference. They advanced to the championship match in the league tournament. The Panthers are fresh off a 3-2 overtime win on the road at UNC-Asheville on Wednesday. It was their first road win of the season. Hannes Burmeister leads the way for GSU with seven goals, which currently ranks tied for sixth nationally. Burmeister's 1.17 goal per game average is tied for third in the nation. The Panther's high-powered offensive attack ranks No. 25 in the country in scoring offense with a 2.13 goal per match average.

Well, at least someone got a win last night as we beat Ga State 3-1

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092416aad.html

The South Carolina men's soccer team (5-3-0) tallied its fourth-straight win Saturday night at Stone Stadium after downing Georgia State (5-4-0), 3-1. The Gamecocks took the lead in the 22nd minute after a goal by senior Koty Millard and remained ahead the remainder of the match.

Millard's goal, assisted by senior Kurtis Turner, was his first of the season. He cutback on his defender and fired a beautiful left-footed shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net on the far post.

Carolina would have several more chances in the first half recording six more shots, including two on goal. Senior Danny Deakin had a great chance on a long pass across the box by senior Kevin Walker, but he mishit his shot slightly and missed high.

Freshman Luca Mayr put the Gamecocks comfortably ahead in the 50th minute, scoring his third goal of the season from eight-yards out. It was Turner again that had the feed on the score, tallying his second assist of the match.

Sophomore Ben Davidson got in on the scoring in the 65th minute when he was able to score off a deflection from a shot on goal by Deakin. It was Davidson's first goal of the season and Deakin's third assist this year.

For the third straight match, the Gamecock defense was locked in nearly pitching its third-straight shutout.

A late lapse would lead to a Georgia Southern score with eight seconds remaining in the game after the Gamecocks were unable to clear a late corner kick by the Panthers.

Hosting High Point tonight, with coverage on WatchESPN

http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sport...092716aad.html

South Carolina (5-3-0) welcomes High Point (5-2-1) to Stone Stadium Wednesday evening in the middle match of a three-game home stand. The Gamecocks have won four-straight matches dating back to a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern on Sept. 13.

"The big thing for us is to improve. We say it again and again, but that's really our focus to make sure we're getting better every time we step out onto the field," said Head Coach Mark Berson. "We have a lot that we can continue to work on. Clearly scoring three goals in each of the last two matches and having six different players score is a real positive for us. At the same time, we know we want to keep playing faster. We want to be more sharp. We want to finish our chances better."

Wednesday night's match will be Youth Soccer Night. All Gamecock fans that wear their youth soccer club jerseys receive $1 admission as well as everyone in their group.

Carolina and High Point will be meeting for the just the third time in school history. The Gamecocks lead the all-time series 2-0, with both wins coming at home.

SCOUTING High Point

The Panthers were picked to finish second in the Big South Conference preseason poll behind defending champion Radford. Senior forward Chris Ramsell, who was High Point's leading scorer in 2015 (5G, 3A) is tied for the team lead in points (10) with Siggi Benonysson. The duo each has four goals and two assists. The Panthers have a well-balanced attack as 10 different players have scored goals this season. High Point has outshot their opponents 138-67 in 2016. The Panthers feature two all-conference players from a year ago in the midfield in seniors Renato Punyed and Ebe Kudolo. Goalkeeper Keegan Meyer, a redshirt freshman, is 4-2 with 12 saves in his first season starting in the net.

Great come from behind 3-1 win. USC dominated the first half, outshooting HPU 10-4 but High Point got a quick goal with about a minute left in the half, but in the 69th minute Gudjonsson literally subbed in then scored (maybe 10 seconds apart) to tie it, then 2 minutes later Deakin put us up 2-1. High Point put on a ton of pressure and Pyle made several good saves, then Gudjonsson gave us the necessary insurance in the 86th minute

South Carolina (6-3-0 overall, 1-0 C-USA) plays host to Marshall (5-5 overall, 1-1 C-USA) Sunday night in the team's first conference match at home this season. The Gamecocks opened C-USA play on Sept. 17 on the road at Florida Atlantic with a 1-0 win.

"Marshall is a team that last year knocked us out of the conference tournament in the semifinals, so clearly that thought is fresh in our mind," said Head Coach Mark Berson. "It's a team that's very important in terms of the conference because the top-seven teams in the league go on to the conference tournament. Every match in the league is critical for points. We know Marshall will bring a very good team, a very physical team, a very big team, a very strong team into Stone Stadium on Sunday night."

Sunday night's match is Heroes Night Out as the Gamecocks will honor military members past and present with a pregame ceremony and halftime video. All military members and their families receive FREE admission. Also, fans will receive FREE admission if they bring their ticket stubs from the football game vs. Texas A&M.

Carolina and Marshall split matches last season. The Gamecocks beat the Thundering Herd 2-1 on the road in the regular season, and fell 1-0 to them in the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament.

SCOUTING Marshall

The Thundering Herd fell 2-1 on the road at Evansville in their last outing on Sept. 28. Marshall has scored nine goals on the season and has two players tied for the team lead with two scores in Daniel Jodah and Trevor Starcher. Starcher leads the team in points with six (2G, 2A). Jodah (2G, 1A) and Paul Whitener (1G, 3A) are tied for second on the team in points at five. Jodah ranks first in shots with 14 and Whitener is second with 12. Whitener leads the team in shots on goal with nine and Jodah is second with eight. Whitener sports a solid .750 SOG percentage. Goalkeeper Trevor Clemens has a 4-2 record with 22 saves and three shutouts. His 22 saves are good for an 81.5 save percentage. The Thundering Herd sport a 1-4 record on the road so far in 2016. The team's split matches last season with Carolina winning 2-1 in the regular season at home and Marshall winning 1-0 in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

A good 2-1 win with Deakin scoring in the 79th minute after Marshall had tied it in the 55th minute. Gudjonsson opened up the scoring in the 38th minute

Nice little win streaks both soccers teams have going on right now. Hopefully they both keep it up. The men's team game with Florida International - originally scheduled for tomorrow in Miami - has been postponed until the 10th (Monday) due to the obvious weather conditions this weekend....
