Default How did USC/fans handle 1981?

I wasn't around yet and I realize college football was a much different animal back then, but I'm just curious for some historical perspective here.

Fans: No message boards in 1981. The team handled it with 1984; one bad game away from playing for an NC.

There was less animosity among the fans that I regularly talked with. We basically thought it was Ok since it appeared so unlikely considering the handful of dominant teams back then.

But it was an easier path back then....you didn't play that many games and competition was not the same. Lots of cupcake wins.

Yep...no social media, etc. The volume of hate was not being stirred via the internet. It really was so different.

I just continue to live life, if someone wants to flaunt they won a game, that the refs handed to them, it's on them.

This was my first thought. I remember everyone just going on about how they were buying recruits and then the NCAA came in and everyone just began saying the title wasn't legitimate so it didn't matter.

I was happy for my Grandmother, Aunt and Uncle who were Clemson fans. Honestly, I'd let Clemson have another to let my Grandmother celebrate it if that meant she was back with us to do so.

Three short years later, we got as close as we ever have.

I think that's what makes this one legit and harder to swallow. College football is as big and competitive as it has ever been. As far as we know, Clemson didn't cheat to win this and nowhere near where they did in 1981. They not only beat the best college football team in history, they did it during what many would consider a dynasty. This is easily the greatest achievement in the history of Clemson athletics (and possibly the school) in the most competitive era in college football history. So this one, along with the day and age in which we live, does make this one harder to swallow and deal with.

Yeah, I can definitely understand how the new media age would amplify things. I imagine it was a lot easier to roll with or even ignore in an era without a billion 24-hour news channels, people going nuts on Twitter, etc.

Default Re: How did USC/fans handle 1981?

Historical perspective?/?...blame Panthers owner Jerry Richardson to start with.

Richardson then owned Spartan Foods (which owned Hardees, Quincys & other chain restaurants).

Richardson's son Mark played for Danny Ford...and Ford used the Spartan Foods offices in Spartanburg to make shady back-channel deals ($100/$500/$1000 dollar handshakes) with upstate SC recruits, their family members & even HS school coaches during '79-'81...before they got busted for on campus violations.

^^This is first hand knowledge from my father (who went to college with Jerry Richardson) and my HS girlfriend's dad (who worked at Spartan Foods).

Basically, Richardson (getting a no-talent son a scholarship at Clemson) let Ford use his office to the get best players money could buy.

Want to put this story to the test, ask Mark Richardson (now on Clemson's Board of Trustees) how many D-I college offers he got besides Clemson??...ZERO.

They redefined cheating in the college athletics in the late 70s - early 80's here in SC/NC/GA areas...they had to get advantage to compete with UGA...who was on their schedule every year back then.

I was just a kid back then, but the stories I heard from people I've known all of my life (including older Clemson grads) made me despise that cow town & the color orange.

GO COCKS!!

I was living in Cola in 1981. Hated it when Clem won the natty.

The following football season when Clem started out by losing to GA, then tied BC and won a close game vs Western, I had a bumper sticker on my car that read:

Beaten, Tied, Taken For a Ride
Clemson Tigers - EX-National Champs

Funny thing is I don't think Clem lost another game that year.

Probation later on helped soothe the pain.

IPTAY - It's Probation Time Again Y'all!

We were quite clever back in the day.

We hired Joe Morrison in 1983 and were one bad game away from playing for the Natty in 84, RIP Man in Black!

I thought it was funny in 1981. As soon as Clemson won, there was a NCAA investigation and they were proven as cheaters.

The NCAA was already looking into their program before the National Title run. They knew they were going to get nailed before they even left for the Orange Bowl.

Nothing like that happening now

It's kind of pathetic to let a team that you are not a fan of's success negatively impact your mood. I say congrats to Clemson for their success.

Default Re: How did USC/fans handle 1981?

I was a college freshman that year.....most students were mad as hornets for a few days....but college life is such a distraction that it didn't last all that long in my world. If I had been an adult rubbing shoulders with the other side on a daily basis in the business world, it might have been far more disturbing for far longer.

Having graduated from high school in Aiken in 1980, I had lots of friends on both sides of the equation. Aiken sent several players to Clemson, William Perry, Kenny Danforth and William Dean Perry....so that amped it up even more when they won in '81. But again, with college life being college life, I quickly moved on.

But yesterday and today, I have seen a relentless stream of all my old high school friends celebrating the Clemson stuff. All I can say is that now that I'm an adult, it's bad enough to deal with it on facebook from 800 miles away. I'm REALLY glad I don't have to rub shoulders with them in person for the next 365....
