That looks interesting, Yancey. Hope it isn't cost prohibitive.

I am chomping at the bit to brew again as I have taken about 4 months off due to life's intrusion. Still haven't brewed my brown ale so that will be my first batch (hopefully in a couple of weeks).

I bet that wold work well with keeping a steady mash temperature. Not sure how it does heating up a whole ton of water fast.

I would be concerned about possible wort scorching of the wort around the unit.

That is why I use the wifi model. Most times I give it a head start by starting with hot tap water but it heats my 12 quart Rubbermaid SV container to 145 from tap in a matter of minutes. You can find deals on them frequently. https://anovaculinary.com/anova-precision-cooker/wifi/

The water is constantly circulating so that all areas of the bath register the same temp. No hot or cold spots.

Not sure where I should put this, either here or in the WTF thread... Ultimately it fits better here but, wow!

http://thechive.com/2017/10/30/so-va...u-know-FB-page

I may try this but have to collect samples and perform quality control!

After taking a 6 month sabbatical from the hobby I will brew my first batch this year on Saturday. It will be an American brown ale, followed the next weekend with a pale ale.

I will rethink ordering a Dark & Stormy in the near future.

Ha! I remember hearing about this when they first announced it. Ehh, it's just lacto. I'd try it. I've even considered swabbing my dog's mouth to see if I could get any viable lacto. Haven't done it though. Yet...

My American brown ale is finishing its fermentation and will be bottled on Saturday. I just pitched a lot of French saison yeast (wyeast 3711) into a batch that I brewed Sunday and had a nice head of krausen in 11 hours. This yeast likes it warm so I will ramp up the temps a degree or two each day to about 78°, which imparts a funkiness to saisons.

I am as excited as a little girl!

WY3711 is my absolute go-to for saisons (and a lot of my mixed fermentation beers). That shit will ferment rocks. I will say though, it's a pretty exothermic fermenter, I've never had to raise temps for that yeast. Regardless, my 3711 beers typically finish 1.000 - 1.004, dry as a bone, just how I like my saisons.

So, I gave brewing a six month break but started again in ernest around March. In 5 consecutive weeks I have brewed an American brown ale (pictured), a saison, a cream ale and two pale ales. Gonna take this weekend off. But I have next few brews planned out so that my spring may have ten 5 gallon batches to my name.

Anyone want to drink some homebrew???

Not only is tomorrow Cinco de Mayo AND national naked gardening day, it is national homebrew day! I will be out at DIY Brewhouse in Pontiac (near Advance Autoparts) brewing an all grain steam beer to celebrate. There will also be a tasting going on, so if you have free time there is fun to be had.

Hope to see some of you out there!

Go Cocks!!!

Just cracked a bottle of my house pale ale 10 days old and it's my best yet in 2018. Have done 6 batches currently and I love this one, with great fruity aroma and an underlying bitterness that compliments the maltiness. No off flavors I can detect, unlike my honey pale ale which has an astringency that sucks.

Two are fermenting away and soon to be bottled. A steam beer with a new yeast, wlp800 which is the pilsner urquell strain, but I am using it around 58°-60° instead of a preferred 48°-50°. We shall see on that one. The other is an apricot wheat with good old wlp001, west coast ale yeast. Cheers!

Got up early this am to get a jump on brewing and hopefully finish early. Got my mashtun cleaned and ready, then measured out strike water. Grabbed my bag of grains.... They aren't ground.

I have no mill and the LHBS is closed til Tuesday.

In the words of Charlie Brown...

I would let you borrow mine if we lived close.

Crushing manually with a wine bottle is an option. But probably would take too long.

Thanks, SA! For some reason I had thought I had these ground about 3 weeks ago but, alas, that wasn't the case. I have used a rolling pin in the past with good results, but only for 1# or less. This recipe has 11# in the grain bill.

I have been thinking about getting a mill but then if I did I wouldn't have to visit my friend as frequently at the beer store. On the other hand, I could get a Corona mill for $25-$30 and do my own grinding. After that, how much more time before I start to keg!!!

Sobering...
