It was a bad movie written and directed by second rate hacks. It shows a real lack of continuity with the first movie and is full of plot holes.

Pretty much this. I can't imagine what JJ Abrams is thinking right now he pretty much handed that moron Rian Johnson a home run ready made formula for a sequel and Johnson just shit all over it and managed to ruin the legacy of the best hero in the entire Star Wars canon and give completely unfulfilling answers to the questions from TFA in the process. Hopefully JJ can clean up this dumpster fire in Episode IX.

Don't disagree, but I don't think his goal was the status quo, and I don't hate it. I'm glad we'll be moving on from a Skywalker driven storyline, and that the last of the trilogy won't be handcuffed into bringing it all to an end. They can now focus on the new heros.

It was a very uneven movie in tone, pace, and quality.

There were scenes like the Rey and Kylo team up that was thrilling as was the Poe scene in which he tries to take out the cannons. Then there were other scene that would have been at home on network television or a sitcom.

I was completely taken out of the movie when Poe did his “i can’t hear you” skit.

The amount of comedy was just wrong for this series. It felt like they saw Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, and Deadpool and said, “yes, add more jokes.” This fall lm was missing a laugh track.

Additionally, i recognize this may be mine own fault, but, Carrie Fisher was very distracting in this movie because i just kept waiting for her to be written out of the movie. I thought for sure they would have killed her when she got BLOWN INTO SPACE. So the next scene she was in felt even more STUPID. I literally facepalmed when she flew back to the ship. Every scene after that i wondered how would they write her out.

There were things i liked:

It was a unique movie in the series

More character development for the new guys (Rey, Ben, Poe, Finn)

Some of the action scenes where very well done

The scenes where they went to the Casino planet felt like a call back to the prequels so i liked that they attempted to marry the prequels to the original with the visuals there.

Yoda reminded me of original trilogy Yoda than prequel Yoda through his wise words and without each sentence being inverted

I didn't even get that leia organa floating scene..I personally want her gone..she is creepy at this point.

The luke thing at the end was dumb..especially when he acted like he was brushing off his shoulder..dumb...

Nothing to do with the movie but I hated that the 20th century fox intro wasn't used...those drums and horns tell me star wars is coming. Now that disney bought them, I expect that back..

I'm in agreement with the majority of this. Particularly the issue with the comedy parts.. I don't know that I have been so quickly removed from a movie in the theater. The Leia ship return was really weird as well. I'm not exactly sure as to what they were going for with that. I had just worked a 10hr day and was running on little sleep and I really had to step back mentally to wonder what I just saw.

I really liked the movie, despite feeling disappointed early on. The attempt at comedy was nearing blooper-reel levels at times.

It was just her using the force to get back to the ship because her time wasn't done. She still had a role to play in the balance. Everybody saying kylo saying reys parents were nobodies means she is not a Skywalker that isn't necessarily true. He could have been saying they were nobody to him. She's gonna be related to someone

It was, but it felt "off" because she's never used the Force in such a manner in the previous 4 movies, other than feeling that Luke wasn't dead when the 2nd Death Star blew up and feeling when Han died (still hate typing that). And we've never seen her learning how to use her skills. Even Little Man was confused (for lack of a better word) over that.

Overall I enjoyed it, and didn't look deeply into anything in this viewing. I'll go see it again, as I did Episode VII and delve more into my critical thinking of it.

And...Phasma isn't dead. It was too easy. Gwendolyn Christie has to be back for Episode IX. There was still too much tension left after that fight scene. I want a more epic battle between Phasma and Fin.

I was not prepared for Luke's death. I told Little Man as we were walking out that "they are killing off my childhood heros".

I laughed at her flying back to the ship harder than I laughed at any of the actual jokes in the movie.

I agree there was too much humor and it was too campy overall.

I was underwhelmed by the "training" with Luke, if you can even call it that.

I thought Snoke was actually a pretty interesting character but they killed him off before he was able to have a huge impact in the series.

Among other plot holes, they still haven't done anything to make Rey's power believable. No training at all and she is still Kylo's equal, if not a little more powerful. Maybe they'll reveal something in the last one.

Zombie Space Leia was one of the many things that ruined the movie. If you didnt realize, they also killed Admiral Ackbar with that same scene.

The casino side story was such a long/drawn out turd sequence just to set up the kid at the end using the force to grab his broom.

Rian Johnson basically took all the key plot points that JJ Abrams set up in TFA and shit all over them. Snoke back story? Nope, kill him off. Rey family story? Nope, they were drunks and sold her into slavery. Luke Skywalker return to hero of the rebellion? Nope, make him a whiney bitch and then kill him at the end of the movie after doing something only kinda cool.

Overall the movie was ****ing stupid and worse than The Force Awakens which I did not believe was possible. The only movie Disney has gotten "right" as far as Im concerned as a hard core star wars nerd was Rogue One. Maybe they should have let Gareth Edwards be the creative director over the main triology movies instead of a second rate hack like JJ Abrams.

-Deep breath-

I honestly don't know what I watched the other night. I don't hate it. I don't love it. For everything I have a gripe about, I can find something that I loved. So these are going to be some scattered thoughts in bullet form:

- I don't like that JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson were not on the same page for this movie. I can also see why Colin Trevarro (sp) got the heck out of dodge for the next film. All of the plot lines and potential plot lines that Abrams created and set up in The Force Awakens were destroyed in 3 hours by Rian Johnson. I honestly have NO idea how Abrams is going to save this trilogy with the 3rd film. To be honest, I am no where as hyped for the last film as I was pre-TLJ. I get that they want to end the Skywalker story line (and I actually am looking forward to a fresh start) but they couldn't wait until the last film to do it? Johnson is getting his own trilogy that he can do whatever he wants in as far as story. Abrams had the entire road map for this trilogy mapped out and Johnson pretty much says "nah" and blows everything up. What are we going to have for a plot(s) in the 3rd film? Rey vs Ben for 2.5+ hours? Poe vs Hux I reckon.

- How come there was never any backstory to Snoke or Phasma? Apparently Snoke is a pretty powerful dude with his ability to connect people with the force but he goes out like a bitch? I mean have absolutely no connection with him because I have absolutely no idea who he is. How long has he been around? How does he know about Vader? Same thing with Phasma. Obviously she is human so give us some backstory instead of running around Canto for 30+ mins.

- Like GregoryHouse, I pretty much facepalmed the Lea in space scene. That was brutal. However, I thought her dialogue with Poe was fantastic in this movie.

- I'm mixed on how they handled Luke Skywalker. I like the general idea they had but I think they really botched the execution. I like how they showed the X-Wing in the ocean, I like the dualing suns as a nod to New Hope. I like that he is a Jedi that has lost belief in the Jedi teachings and became an old hermit. I like that we found out where the blue milk comes from. What I didn't like were the flashback scenes with Ben. A guy that experienced his own flirtation with the dark side, that tried to turn his father back to the light, suddenly had a split second thought of killing one of his best friend's and sister's kid? Wut? I also think there was too much "Mark Hamil" in him when it came to the comic relief. Just...UGH.

- The action scenes in this movie were great. The first battle with the Resistance Bombers, Ben & Rey vs the Guards, the kamikaze Command Ship. I thought all of those were great. The kamikaze shot was one of the best shots in the entire Star Wars saga. Ben & Rey vs the Guards was an epic battle. This is where I hope Rian is involved in someway in Episode 9. I liked what he did there and I actually look forward to his own story.

- I like the little easter eggs to Rogue One and the Rebels series in regards to the Hyperspace tracker. BB-8 saying he has a bad feeling about this. The ocean monster behind Rey when she is climbing the mountain.

- I thought Adam Driver was EXCELLENT. I didn't know what to think about him in TFA and even at the beginning of this movie, but by the end he has me sold now. JJ has got to continue his character development. SHOOT THAT PIECE OF JUNK OUT OF THE SKY .. LOL, Han Solo stays winning.

- I also thought Oscar Issac was great. He is one of my favorite characters in the entire Star Wars saga. Its going to be really interesting to what his character progression as he handles losing Lea and I am assuming will have command of the Resistance. I didn't think he got enough time in TFA but it was better this movie. I expect him to be MASSIVE in Episode 9.

- I DO NOT like what they are doing with Rey. I'm cool with the fact that her parents were junk mongers that sold her for parts/money. That was actually a relief that she isn't affiliated with the Skywalkers, Kenobis, Palpatines as it shows there are other force users in the world and that is the direction Rian is supposedly going in his new saga. But it does not make any sense to me how she is so advanced right now. It would've made more sense for her to struggle against the guards and have Ben trying to protect her. Then she improves her skills as she reads the books that she took from the tree since she isn't receiving any direct teaching. Unless they have something planned for EP9, its always going to bother me how she can do the things she does without any explanation. BTW, how does a person from Jakku know how to swim? Please give us more backstory and give her a right of passage somehow. Make her go through the Jedi trials or Jedi temple hunting or something.

- The Anakin Skywalker blue light saber has had a good run. Think about all of the events that thing has been a part of. I thought it was neat how it broke apart. I mean look who it belonged to originally. A guy that was torn between Light/Dark. It'll be interesting to see if Rey puts it back together or makes her own w/ the crystal in it.

- Speaking of that light saber, CAN WE PLEASE FIND OUT HOW MAZ GOT IT? This is driving me crazy.

- Raise your hand if you thought we were going to see Lando Calrrisian on Canto Bright? Idk, I felt like they missed a golden opportunity there.

- I liked bringing Yoda back (puppet version). That was cool. But I really hope one day we get to see the force ghosts of Yoda, Qui Gon, Obi Wan, and Annakin all together. To be honest, it would've made more sense to me for Obi Wan to appear than Yoda but I'm not going to argue about the results. "Page turners they are not" got a pretty good laugh from me.

- I wish there was more R2D2.

- WHERE ARE THE KNIGHTS OF REN? Its very disappointing how they haven't done anything to expand on the clip in The Force Awakens were they are all standing in the rain.

- Didn't mind the porgs.

- Someone clarify, but the ending with the kids must've been years after the end of the movie right? Referring to Luke Skywalker's legend.

That's all my scattered brain can think of right now. I'm sure I'll dig up something else.

Intentional or unintentional?

The Casino Planet is a complete ode to the prequels?

The Space Chase felt more Star Trek than Star Wars?

General Organa flying in space = Guardians of the Galaxy?

Luke Skywalker getting the milk = Kingpin scene with the milk?

The scene with the iron = SpaceBalls?

Rey parents a throwback to Joe Dirt?

Luke/Kylo Ren recounting the last time they saw each other = Rashomon (1950)?....also Gollum?

I think Benicio Del Toro could have pulled out a Heineken I would not have batted an eye (though his character was a bright point in the film)

Captain Phasma as inconsequential overall as Bobba Fett?

Old Speeders trailing across the salt leaving red trails = Raptors in the high grass of Jurrasic Park 2?

Luke dodging Ren's lightsaber = The Matrix?

The kids at the end of the film = Moonwalker or Newsies?

in the process of making a film I guess many things will feel like something else at this point in history so there no good/bad jugdement here, I just couldn't help but think of those things while watching it.

There is something about intertextuality that is alluring overall.

I read some of your comments about the movie and I disagree with many of you. I thought this was a very good movie. I saw it twice this weekend so I had a chance to digest what I may have missed the first time.

Things I didn't like:
-Leia floating back to the ship. Cheesy and unbelievable. Doesn't really fit into how the force works.
-Feel that Rey could have used more training from Luke. Felt there was a bit of a void there.
-DJ. Liked his character. Seems a Han Solo type. Yet thought there could have been more of a story line with him.

My views on the movie:

I thought the humor was great. It was subtle and not over the top. And some of it played into the plot. For example, Poe not hearing Hux was him buying time. Luke's shoulder move was subtle and a nod to him being a hologram. However, these moments are real life. We interact every day with a little humor in how we do things. Their behavior and humor is no different than how many of us would act. So I appreciated the humor and felt it was a reflection of real life. Not everything in Star Wars needs to be so serious and focused.

Mark Hamill was fantastic. Thought this was the best I've ever seen him in a Star Wars movie. I thought him using the force as a hologram was the most bad ass thing ever done using the force. It is above and beyond what anyone has ever done with the force. He went from a weak character who seemed to lose touch with the force to doing one of the most bad ass things ever. Most importantly, it was the message behind it - sacrificing yourself to save others for a greater cause.

Final scenes with Luke and Leia. As Luke sits with Leia at the end, he is talking about Han and says "no one is ever really gone." Then he kisses her forehead. Knowing that Carrie Fisher is gone, that was a powerful, emotional scene realizing he could have been speaking of her as well as he said goodbye.

Old and the new. I think there was a tie back to the old with the way things happened and the first order/resistance thing. However, there seems to be a new direction as well. Star Wars will go in a slightly new direction and that's fine. There isn't as clear of a line between dark and light. I loved the relationship between Ren and Rey. Feels like they are brother and sister much like Luke and Leia. Yet one is dark and one is light but those lines are a little blurred. Love the twist where Ren kills Snoke and fights with Rey. Yet their connection remains even on opposite sides.

The movie was a bit long at times as it took time to develop the characters and the story. However, there were some powerful quotes in the movie. My two favorites were "Failure is the greatest teacher" and Rose's quote to Finn "Don't fight what you hate. Save what you love."

I thought this was a different Star Wars. One that pays tribute to the past yet also seeks a new direction. I thought it was deep, meaningful, had a good message, and was a very good movie. I enjoyed the humor (that's real life) and the twists. This Star Wars showed that everything isn't black and white or dark and light. Yet the messages of hope, sacrifice, and giving yourself to something bigger are still there and still resonate with what Star Wars is about.

Those were the same kids that Fin and Rose came in contact with, that helped them escape from the Casino guards. The ring the kid is wearing is the one Rose showed him to get his help. She must have given it to him.

Yeah but the scene they created on the floor before the guard broke it up was the final scene of Luke Skywalker in action. So it had to happen at least a year or so later than when the movie "ends". Hence the "legend of Luke Skywalker".
