Default AKORN GRILL FROM LOWE'S

Mine gave up the ghost during the cold part of early Jan. I was cooking some steaks on it and the threaded bolts that hold the round cover on (lid) came completely out of the bottom part. Took it back to Lowe's and they gave me a brand new one. I hope this holds together as I take good care of my stuff and constantly go over it to insure that all bolts and nuts are tight. Must have gotten a bad one, but it was a good one for a long time. I had only had it for about 6 months.

I have cooked many a great steak/chicken/hamburger on this Akorn Ceramic Cooker now and if you watch your temps & vents - it does a wonderful job. This past Sunday I did a Crown Pork Roast and I used the Kamado Joe recipe for it and it was awesome.

I know that some of you have the BGE and also the Kamado Joe and both of them are amazing at what you can do with them, but this Akorn for those who are trying to save some money - ain't a bad deal and cooks awesome once you learn how to control the air flow/vents.

If anybody else is considering on and you can wait until August(maybe before), the Vision grill will start going on sale. I got mine for $400, luckily they were on sale about the time I started looking so I didn't really consider it waiting. I've seen Big Green Eggs and just can't see why anybody would pay double for one.

Costco has a pretty sweet kamado grill for around $600 that looks pretty awesome...especially for the price.

I still like my kamado joe if only for being able to divide the heat deflector so that I can cook direct and indirect heat at the same time. Also helps that I got employee pricing rather than paying retail. If money were no object, I absolutely think the kamado joe is the best set up out there. However, cost vs. value leads me to believe the visions and pit boss ceramics are the best way to go.

I would be the first to admit that the Akorn is not a Kamado Joe or BGE. I was able to get mine at the price of $225.00 as I am veteran and they had it on sale the day I first got it. For that price I could not pass it up. Yes, it's the lower end of the market on ceramic cookers, but if I had to do it all over again and could get one at that price again, I would do it. Whatever model you buy it is going to be a learning curve to get use to it and if you have a tight budget, then this is the one for you - if you can get it at a sales discount.

There also might be a 5 to 10 degree difference in cooking temps on the Akorn versus the other - more expensive ones, but if you know how to cook, then you ain't going to be that much off the mark. BGE and Kamado Joe offer a lot of recipes that you can write down to use on whatever brand you prefer. I am still going to get me a "RECTEC - Slow Cooking Pellet Grill" that are made in Augusta, GA. I have several friends that have them and for slow cooking - you can't beat them. Somewhat on the pricey side, but it is a quality item like the BGE or Kamado Joe, just a different type of cooking.

One thing that helped me out was getting a good thermometer. I got the thermoworks smoke(2 probes, one for grate temp, one for meat temp) and a free thermopop pen thermometer with my order for around $100. they have really changed how well I can smoke meat. Comes in handy for doing chicken and tri tip to where you cant afford to go over target tamps.

I have heard nothing but good things about the akorn besides rust and after fighting rust on grills, that's why I spent the extra. if I could only spend $300, I would of got one and kept it in the garage.

Am I missing something? Was it a bad one or a good one? Did it last a long time or 6 months?

I hope you did not miss anything as it was kind of a play on words. I really enjoyed the first one that I got and used it a lot before the thing came apart on me during the cold weather we had back in Jan this year. Lowe's give me another one already put together and I have been using it ever since. As I stated earlier, it is a cheaper version, but at the price and of course if you love grilling out/cooking out, then maybe it is for you. The temp probes are most likely a better way to go for those who really want to keep that temp right where you need it. Sounds like I need to get me one of those.

This is what I ended up getting after trying the igrill weber thermometer. if you are new to kamado like I was and use to using a controlled smoker(electric), the grate probe and receiver really help with setting up alarms. I can be in the shop or drinking with neighbors across the street and it will let me know if the grill went over my target kamado temp. It is a really large learning curve when you first start with the egg type of grills/smokers, but this thing has really helped with control. after a few uses, you will know what to exactly do when cooking for the temp you want.

https://www.thermoworks.com/Smoke

Edit:
These things were designed for competition smoking so they are right on with readings and built very well

Lonnie, that is a great commercial about your grill. That guy is a hoot.

Keep us posted about how you like your new grill/smoker and what you have cook on it so far. How does this smoker/grill stack up against other ones like the RECTEC?

Ah my favorite threads to ever pop up.

I have a Weber Smokey Mountain 18 "Bullet Bill". That we use to smoked meat balls or if I'm just doing 1 brisket or need fall over room when Jessica (see below) gets full.

https://www.weber.com/US/en/grills/c...pimid_112.html

But my baby is my Lang 36"

https://www.langbbqsmokers.com/lang36/

Once I'm able to get some money rolling again. She will be upgraded to the 48" or I may have them make me a 60" patio option.

For me, I do BBQ because of the cook. I love getting out there and playing with the fire and drinking beer. I don't want some big crock pot you can feed smoke into. If I want to "set it and forget it", I have a BBQ Guru thermostat that I can put on my Weber. If I do a cook over night, I'll use it so it can regulate things throughout the night and I don't have to worry about spikes or drops.

There are several people on this site that have setups that sell for three times as much.

ps. I hear there is a grill over at cocky swap that doesn't cost anywhere near $600.
