I don't think you're giving Microsoft enough credit for the turnaround they've enacted since the launch of these systems. Sure, the red ring of death put them way behind from a brand and quality point of view in the prior console generation. But recent moves like backwards compatibility for 360 games, pulling back the always online requirement they'd announced when the Xbox One was announced, etc. have allowed them to climb their way back into the race.

For example, thru Nov. 26, 2016, for the prior month Xbox One sales actually exceeded Playstation sales in North America (668,206 to 591,336). That was, in fact, the 5th consecutive month of Xbox seeing better sales than Sony dating back to July 2016.

PS4 got off to a massive head start largely, IMO, because of the differences in the way the systems pitched themselves following E3 in 2013. And I don't think that Microsoft will ever bridge that gap this generation, but they've done a lot of work to repair their relationship with consumers (and I don't think you're giving them enough credit for that). Problems from 2013 that they've fixed:
1) Backwards compatibility
2) Always online requirements
3) Continuing to push the Kinect
4) Pricing
5) Game ownership issues (ability to lend, resell, etc. games that you actually bought due to the notion of just owning a license for one system)
7) Lack of support for indie developers

No doubt, Microsoft was COMPLETELY TONE-DEAF in 2013 and was trying to minimize the ownership and control that consumers had over their games and game-play experience to maximize its own profits. The market slapped them down and because Sony (perhaps in part b/c got to present second at that E3) was able to capitalize with a conference that highlighted how they wouldn't be doing any of those things, which allowed them to rocket ahead when the systems launched shortly thereafter.

To be fair, though. Microsoft has changed its policies on that and has appeared to have been trying very hard to listen to the market more recently. I think this is not insigificant as Phil Spencer came into power at Xbox in March 2014, replacing former head Marc Whitten. The changes really started to take place then.

I agree though, people would still by consoles, but it would be useless for people who game on the PC to buy.
In terms of specs and costs to get those specs, PC trumps console all day every day. The convenience of console is a huge selling point - no compatibility issues, you're guaranteed that games are going to be optimized to run at the best of their (and your equipment's) capabilities. Not to mention the other ways a console expands your entertainment system in regards to video content, so it's essentially like replacing your Apple TV/Roku/Chromecast with an all-in-one machine that plays real, AAA franchise games.

And Xbox doesn't get indie games left and right too?

PS4 had the initial jump start, but ID@Xbox has brought a ton of indie titles over to the platform. Some are exclusive, some were already on PS4, and some have the support to release on both at the same time.

I find that people heavily favoring one system or another are just misinformed or ignorant about what all is available from the competitor, or they don't care to weigh to the two sides before touting a victor. They see sales numbers, mainstream popularity, and assume the other masses did their research for them (not necessarily you, CockyDevil, as I've seen you post in a few gaming threads and assume you at least casually follow it).

Good points, friend got one because he said he didn't want to look at a computer screen all day. I told him about the Steam Link afterwards, and he was Meh about it. Also doesn't hurt most of our friends are on XBL.
