Yeah for sure! One day perhaps I can hear your system. Or if you are in COLA for a game we can talk in person!

I'm currently running a Yamaha RX-A1050, w/ Sony SS-F7000 Mains, Sony SS-CN5000 Center, Sony SS-B1000 rear and Micca M-8C Ceiling speakers and a Velodyne VX-11 Sub in a 5.2.1 Dolby Atmos setup.

I use it mostly for movies with my Sony XBR75X940C. I ordered an Oppo UDP-203 4K blu-ray player that'll be here in a day or two. That'll finish my system off for the time being. 4K, HDR and Atmos feels like you're actually there in person, well at least with a 75" screen it does lol.

So you have a bit of a surround sound home entertainment system. Do you ever just listen to music and from what source (CD, LP, FLAC)?

I've been into music for some time and have a sizeable vinyl collection. Most of my music is "pre-Beatles". Blues, Big Band, true original Rythm and Blues (not the junk they call R&B today). I also DJ'ED for 30 plus years doing weddings, reunions, etc. So, I have a home system using a 70's Era Sanusi amp with JBL L100 speakers and a portable system I using a Numark mix board and Macke thump powered speakers which I love. I mIuch prefer the warm vinyl sound. The midrange where the vocals are is so much better. I use the Technics Sl-1200 turntables with Ortophon cartridges. You do need a nice amp, obviously, but speakers determine sound quality more than any other component. For the best control, you need some for of crossover extern to the amp and split the bass to a subwoofer, not to enhance the bass, but to get it out of the way of the midrange. FWIW, some of the DJ style speaker systems provide exceptional sound Ina home environment and are much cheaper too. Go by a Guitar Center and give the Thumps a listen.

I'm glad you showed up, because it looked like the thread was going to devolve into home entertainment systems, which is NOT exactly what this thread was intended for.

You are so right. Of all my sound sources, by far the best is the vinyl; you really lose a lot of the upper range with other sources. I have a Harman Kardon linear drive turntable, and like you, I prefer the Ortophon cartridges. They are more expensive but well worth the sound. Some of the newer amps don't even have controls for midrange, treble and bass, either.

You have some quality equipment. I'll bet it sounds great.

I have a friend who lives in Batesburg-Leesville SC who hand builds custom speakers and amps. His website is thehornshoppe.com. He is a real down to earth dude that builds world class gear that competes with systems that cost way lots more. Check out his website and give him a call if interested. It's the real deal

My hearing has deteriorated over the decades. Some of that is probably due to years of firing hot air balloon burners. Anyway today I find that I just have no need for high end audio. It would be wasted. My 32" monitor has a 40" soundbar and subwoofer that meets most of my needs. My car has a kicked up satellite radio system that is great for when I am rolling. A couple of my Amazon Echoes are connected to adequate bluetooth speaker systems. I gets by.

In the past I did have some quality systems though. When I was travelling and moving about frequently I needed a good rig suited for an apartment. I decided on a pair of 5' tall Acoustat electrostatic speakers powered by an Adcom 555 amp. I could couple that with a subwoofer and mid range for times it was OK to blast but still have quality sound when I needed to let the neighbors sleep. I still have these speakers sitting in storage.

"what??"

Jokes aside, I love the sound of those. Huge fan of Magnepan as well.

The problem I have with soundbar is they generally sound kind of tinny and lack low end. Those little bitty 8" subs seem to roll off around 40hz.

Since you care enough to repair, you must also listen. What sort of system do you play?

What sort of power are your speakers rated to handle, and what is your present amp rating?

Don't know a thing about sound equipment, but would love to learn about it as I'm a big music buff. I would love some advice on a good setup. I want something that I can hook my turn table into and will be good for home theatre as well. I'd say my budget would be somewhere around $2-3k.

I would suggest getting a decent AVR (audio video receiver) ($300-$500ish)and some good speakers, should start with just the Left & Right (Probably 500-700 each)and a good subwoofer ($500 and up), then buy the matching center speaker and as time passes save up for the surround speakers. You should be able to run the AVR in stereo for pure music if you like that sound.

Few questions so I can help you a bit better...

How big is the room and is it open or closed off?

Do you mind Floor standing speakers or would you need smaller bookshelf speakers?
