Default NCAA introduces new basketball policies

1. Elite HS and college players can be represented by NCAA certified agents (not sure who determines if they are elite?)

2. Players can enter draft but return to college if undrafted

3. Stiffer punishments for programs/couches that run afoul of the rules.

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-bas...ostseason-bans

Of course, they waited just long enough with Bowen to implement rule change #2 to screw him over.

I think once you've signed professionally that ship has sailed. Bowen, of course, JUST signed with an Australian team this week.

That's the way I read it. And if Felder signs with an agent he too can come back.

Yeah, is not likely they will break their contract with their teams even if they could come back, but maybe Dozier get's cut or something. Then what?

A lot of these terms have yet to be clearly defined. Were all these rules approved by the presidents and/or coaches, or did the NCAA just say, this is what we’re going to do with zero input. I like where this is going but there seems to be a lot left undone.

ultimately it wouldnt have affected us with bowen because the eligibility is what pushed him out, he still would have been in the position under this rule if he didnt get drafted of deciding either to enter the gleague or go overseas if he wanted live action prior to the next nba draft.

it gives players a safety net, if these rules were in practice back then dozier potentially could have come back to usc after going undrafted if he had notified the usc ad of his intentions to return to school by 5pm the monday following the draft. dozier is not eligible to come back now, hes already played in the nba and gleague and i dont think this rule will be retroactive considering the deadline has obviously passed for players who have went undrafted in previous drafts.

Uhh but what if they decide to come back and their spot is taken? How do teams recruit with this in mind? Not very well thought out by the NCAA.. should’ve been if you aren’t drafted in the 1st round.

I guess you have to gauge whether or not you think your guy will get drafted and go from there. You already have to figure out if you think your guys will turn pro, so this just seems like a variation on that.

Your second point confuses me as it seems contradictory to your first. Allowing people drafted after the first round to opt to return to school would only make figuring out your numbers even more confusing. If you're concerned about figuring out numbers for recruiting, seems like you wouldn't want something that would further muddle the process. Also that would have massive implications for the NBA draft itself. Taking guys with eligibility after the first round would be a big risk because you'll waste the pick if they decide they want to play another year to shoot for round 1.

But they never decided on his eligibility. They punted on the decision long enough to force him to choose between continuing to wait on them or declaring for the draft.

Under this system, he could have declared for the draft and, if not drafted, come back to await the NCAA's decision on his eligibility.

Apparently NCAA gave that duty to USA Basketball without them knowing about it and they're not to happy about it.

Adrian Wojnarowski‏Verified account @wojespn 20h20 hours ago

Few are pleased w/ NCAA's handling of release. USA Basketball and the NBA were blindsided w/ NCAA dictating USAB would decide which HS players could eventually hire agents. USAB doesn't have desire or infrastructure for those evaluations. If anyone has that expertise, it's NBA.

I saw that. Seems like the idea is flawed out of the gate. From what I read, it's contingent on the NBA dropping the one-and-done rule, but that's not gonna happen for a couple more years or so at least.

Wouldn't matter. Dozier being paid to pay professionally automatically voids any eligibility he had remaining.

Not surprising at all, given it's the NCAA.
