Default Roku vs Chromecast (Stick)

I just bought a new 50" TV, but it is not a Smart TV. I have narrowed my search down to Roku Streaming Stick + and the Google Chromecast (2nd Gen).
I have read reviews, but I'd rather hear from a regular user.

My main concern is performance and ease of use. I don't want something that lags, has buffering issues (I am close to the router), takes forever to load up, etc. I know the primary difference between the two is the UI and lack of UI, but once again all I care about is performance. Chromecast not having Amazon Prime is a downer, but I can work around that if needed.

Anybody currently or in the past use the Streaming Stick/SS+ or the 2nd Gen Chromecast?

Tiebreaker for me was that Roku has a remote, and Chromecast needs a phone or other device to be controlled.

This. I have both and never had lag issues with either but with the Chromecast you need the extra device. Roku has many benefits over the CC. There are several flavors of the Roku. We do have a couple of the Express versions to get sling to other TVs and they work fine.

I have Roku and I love it...works great and it has a remote but I would recommend putting the remote app on your phone or tablet in case you lose remote. I also like using my phone for the keyboard when searching in the roku.

I will throw my hat in for the Roku as well, can be controlled with a harmony remote like the rest of my HT gear.

Thank you all for the feedback. Few ?'s:

Do you have it powered through your TV or the wall? How long does it take for it to "boot up" once powered on?

Is there lag when switching between apps/loading up content?

Is it possible to stream my local media (aka downloaded movies)?

I had mine run via HDMI to my AVR and used the usb outlet on the AVR for power booted up pretty quickly.

Not much of an issue with lag or loading content.

I do think you can use it to play movies if you have them stored on a server, just have never actually tried.

We have both. We have used Chromecast for years for projecting apps to the TV. Great for Watch ESPN, in GA I donít always get the USC games.

We got Roku recently and use the Charter Spectrum app for live TV, this saves us from paying monthly for multiple cable boxes. We just have 1 DVR. It is also great for other apps. Easy to use with the remote and the kids love the headphone jack on the remote.

The Amazon Fire stick is sweet too, particularly if you have Prime. I have a Roku TV but both my Fire and Chromecast sticks are more intuitive.

I have firesticks. My coworker has rokus and I have used his extensively, personally I greatly prefer the amazon interface, along with the ability to "sideload" apps that aren't available through the amazon app store, I am not familiar with the chromestick but I know the roku is not capable of that. Or if it is, it is a much more complex process than just "flipping a switch" like what you do in the fire OS

I power mine through the USB port in my TV (some kind of Samsung TV). It is on all the time so I just switch inputso nthe TV and it is ready to go. There is some lag going b/w apps but only like 5 seconds or so and I have no idea on the last one.

Default Re: Roku vs Chromecast (Stick)

Ordered the Roku- since the user experience and performance seemed like a non issue, it came down to Chromecast not offering Prime video and the Fire Stick being too pro-Amazon. I was able to pick up the Streaming Stick+ for $30 (normally $70), and will be getting it next week.

I will update with my thoughts when I start using it.

Just saw where Google will restrict Amazon devices from using Youtube.. looks like a war has begun

It's working today, and this is per google or amazon? If it's an amazon decision (they aren't gonna offer the YouTube app in the amazon ap store) it's an easy fix, go into settings then click allow third party apps, and use an amazon approved ap like downloader to download the YouTube ap from the google play store...

Amazon and Google are fighting like a couple of 3 year olds about it. For the time being it only affects the Echo Show. It won't kick in on the fire stick and fire tv until 1/1/18 and by then they will have worked it out.
