I believe people are overreacting somewhat.

My 15yr-old daughter has been counting down the days for this vote, and is upset with the outcome. I told her that things are rarely as great as touted to be, and rarely as horrific as they are purported to become. And the idea of a slowed, or more expensive internet is horrific thing to her. ;-)

Net neutrality has been the normal state of the internet since it's creation. You have no earthly idea what you're talking about.

No one really talked about it until around 2012ish when Congress(particularly Republicans bribed by Telecom companies)tried to dismantle it with SOPA. After that, it was steady congressional Republican attacks until 2015 when the FCC finally officially protected it. Then, those telecom giants focused less on congressional corruption and more on bribing the FCC.

I'm just waiting for the twitter mob once people have to pay a monthly fee to use social media.

Then people will care.

In all honesty I don't see this affecting the popular sites too much, but it's going to make it much harder for another YouTube/Facebook/Twitter startup to be possible w/o serious investment. Sites will either have to pay for their bandwidth priority, raise subscription rates to offset the difference, or sell a lot more ad space. Either way, the consumer loses.

Wow. Net neutrality wasn’t even a term until 2003 so no it hasn’t been around since the creation of the internet and therefore wrong again bc it was talked about before 2012 as you say ‘ish.’ If anything I’ll give you the benefit of thinking of common carrier systems. It’s similar but not the same.

The term wasnít coined until later but the concept of an open internet for everyone and any business to use has been there since the dawn of the internet.

Pre 2015 we didnít have net neutrality, do you remember all the chaos then? No, no you donít bc the internet was fine then without govít regulation as well.
The Madison River Communications company was fined US $15,000 by the FCC, in 2004, for restricting their customers' access to Vonage, which was rivaling their own services.

AT&T was also caught limiting access to FaceTime, so only those users who paid for AT&T's new shared data plans could access the application.

In July 2017, Verizon Wireless was accused of throttling after users noticed that videos played on Netflix and Youtube were slower than usual, though Verizon commented that it was conducting "network testing" and that net neutrality rules permit "reasonable network management practices".

Wrong. Lot of ISPs currently have day caps and charge you more if you use more.

Quote:
Now sitting on the other end of that pipe is the internet that you use. So Facebook is coming through the pipe to you. And so is Amazon. And so is WeeklyStandard.com. All of these businesses use that pipe to get to their customers. And the guys who own the pipeóthe Verizons and Comcasts and Coxes of the worldóarenít allowed to charge them anything.
Wrong again. All of the websites and services have their own ISP test they pay to get you the content. You donít think companies like Netflix or amazon or cockytalk donít have fees they pay their ISP?

Bullshit. I stopped reading after these two paragraphs.

The sad thing is that people don't care... they don't care that our politicians.. democrat or republican can be wine and dined aka Lobbied to vote to whoever is the highest bidder. Even if it means selling out Americans to companies like Verizon or Comcast.

Unfortunately the bright side is that when people's internet bills start to rise, and they are forced to pay for different websites or face throttled speeds people will be forced to wake up.
This. Lobbying should be illegal as hell. Its a joke that ANY Politician can be legally bought and paid for but isn't this the reason those Politicians will spend Millions to get elected to a 180K year job. Our Government is corrupt and its so easy to see.

What I believe you will see (and are already seeing) is a marriage between content providers and service providers. ISPs will then upcharge or throttle down opposing content...

Could mean a lot of things. ISPs could make exclusivity deals with the companies that run the gaming servers to entice consumers to pay more to not be throttled. They could sell packages for certain games and gaming services. They could cap your data usage...well for any reason they want.

Ex. Microsoft makes a deal with Comcast that throttles Xfinity users connections to Steam and PlayStation Network to force Xfinity customers (the majority of whom already have no choice but to use Xfinity for internet due to non-compete contracts ISPs have with each other) to either pay more money, switch to Xbox/Windows, or suffer uselessly slow connection speeds.

The short version is net neutrality forced ISPs to handle all data without discrimination based on where that data was going or where it came from. Comcast couldn't slow Netflix down to force you to watch Hulu.Google couldn't intentionally throttle connections to Vimeo.

Nothing says neutrality like expanding the FCCs power to constrain the internet. Nothing gives the executive branch the authority to restrict internet lines. These regs were only allowed recently by a circuit that heavily leans towards activist judges. That is, judges who create law, not who stand by the rule book given to them.
https://www.cato.org/publications/co...net-neutrality

That kind of thing should be passed through Congress, not the executive branch. If you care about all of your internet coming through at the same speeds, then contact your congressman. Don't get pissed at an executive branch sticking to the rules.
