#56 Mike Johnson C LB 6-4 228 1963-1964 Church Hill, TN

Diagnosed with cancer, Mike became gravely ill as a sophomore in December 1964. During spring, students raised and contributed $1,589 to the Mike Johnson Hospital Fund. The fund was started by Herman Helms, The State's executive sports editor, to aid Johnson's family in meeting growing financial obligations due to Mike's Kingsport, Tenn hospitalization.

The starting center for the 1964 football season, Coach Bass described Mike as "the best offensive center I've ever coached."

Mike attended the Duke vs. Carolina game in Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 25, 1965. Four days later, on September 29th, 20 year-old Michael Forrest Johnson of Church Hill, Tennessee passed away while watching his brother play in a Pee Wee football game. The University of South Carolina honored him by retiring his #56 football jersey. The team carried it with them to Knoxville on Friday October 8th for Saturday's game with Vols.

Following a student petition drive and student government vote, in May, 1966, the new lounge in the "viel block" (K, L, M & N) of the men's residence halls was dedicated and named in honor of Mike. Mike's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Clay Johnson of Kingsport, TN were present as USC President Thomas F. Jones conducted the dedication ceremony for the Michael Johnson Memorial Lounge.

#55 Joe Williams HB QB 5-11 158 1935-1938 Bishopville

"A spectacular touchdown pass on the frst play of the game gave the Carolina Gamecocks a 7-0 victory in their season finale against Catholic University in Washington. Monday's game, scheduled last Saturday, had been postponed because workmen were unable to remove ice from the field of Griffith Stadium. Two seniors playing their last game for Carolina figured prominently in the lone touchdown play. Ed. Clary, halfback, tossed a long aerial to Ben Joe Williams, 152 pound senior back, who gathered it in directly on the 50 yard marker and scampered to the goal. The play started on the Gamecock 18, where they had taken the kick-off. Minutes later the same diminutive Williams broke through the Cardinal line and traveled 79 yards to cross the Catholic goal, but the play was called back and Carolina penalized 15 yards for holding." #48 Nick McGriff LS 6-0 221 RS SO Gainesville FL

A walk-on sophomore long snapper, GamecockOnline suggests that Nick has the ability to have Drew Williams fighting to keep his job. Appearing in 6 games, Nick earned a letter in 2015, his redshirt freshman season.

While Dexter's name doesn't appear on the Gamecock's post-spring depth chart, his official profile states that he's "expected to provide the Gamecocks some much-needed help up front." Rated a top defensive tackle out of H.S., No. 237 on Rivals 250, and a Scout, ESPN and 247 Sports four-star prospect, here's hoping that Dexter is living the Lombardi creed that "The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand."
