Default Brian Steele promotion?

I wonder if Frank would consider promoting Brian Steele to fill the spot left by Matt Figger?

Extremely doubtful. Frank needs someone who can help on the recruiting trail and since Steele hasn't been on the recruiting trail before he would have an adjustment period to say the least.

Football should have taught us to go get the best coach available. No more buddy hires just because they are a friend. No former player hires just because they were once a player. No more lazy hires, period. If one of the aforementioned is the best, then hire them. Otherwise, go out and find a great replacement coach.

I'd like to pilfer Duke's Nate James. He's a great natural fit to be Frank's #2.

Steele would not take Figger's spot. If anything, one of the more veteran assistants would take Figger's spot and everyone would move up one spot in the pecking order.

And if we need to add a new assistant at the lower rung, and assuming that he is not wanting to play overseas, go with Justin McKie. He is a tie both to our great run this year and to our prior success, when his Dad teamed with Larry Davis and Melvin Watson to win the SEC.

Another great hire would be Chuck Eidson. Eidson retired from playing overseas and I believe is working with his Dad, Pat, at Pinewood Prep. Like Justin, a coach's son and a real Gamecock.

I would have to say no.
We need an established assistant who is strong on the recruiting trail.

Some guys might be Marty Clarke (St. Mary's), David Cox (Rhode Island). The biggest thing is to higher a coach with connections on the AAU circuit as well as overseas. Both Clarke (Australia) and Cox (D.C. area) have those connections.

Niko Medved (Furman) and Dan Mueller (Illinois State) are two head coaches, but I think they both have eyes on power 5 HC jobs.

Where are you getting your information from? Gee is the head coach at Longwood. Alexander is the head coach at Lipscomb. McMahon is the head coach at Murray State. While it's not unprecedented for head coaches at low/mid majors to take an assistant job at a power conference school, I don't really see that with those guys.

Is this a list of potential D3 Head Coaches? Can we not get someone who actually coaches D1 basketball?

I don't necessarily agree that Frank needs to hire some "established" coach. Steele wants to be a coach. He's a coach now. He's young, energetic, intelligent. He loves USC. He's available. I would bet he would love the job. Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm sure he would learn what he needs to learn quickly. I know Frank thinks Brian has many fine qualities. If Frank wanted to hire him, I would love it.

Frank could hire him, but not for Figger's job. Figger was the top assistant. Hire Steele on the bottom and move the other assistants up one rung on the ladder.

When you have the ability to hire a good proven coach, and we do after this Final Four run for sure, you don't go the unproven route. Hindsight being 20/20 we could have hired a proven DC after Ellis left us but we went Ward. The route the coaches like Steele go is a few years at a bigger school then they take an assistant job at a smaller school, maybe Austin Peay in a few years and then moves up from there. You don't make the hire you're talking about in our position.

There are different ways of doing it. It depends on if Frank thinks Brian has what he wants in a coach, minus the experience of course.

Also minus the already built up recruiting connections. That's why power conference teams hire already established coaches, they already have AAU and HS ties and don't have to spend years cultivating them. That's the big thing.

Perry is not on staff to recruit much, he is more of a teacher. Bruce has had issues hitting the ground running in recruiting, that doesn't mean he won't get his feet under him soon but it hasn't gone as smoothly as planned so far. Frank has had to do way too much of the heavy lifting on the recruiting trail since Underwood and Evans left, we flat out must land someone who can recruit.

Do we know Steele can't recruit? He seems to be a very personable, intelligent young man. I don't know what kind of ability Brian has to evaluate talent, but I'm sure he can relate to players and charm their Mommas.

I have no idea what Frank is looking for, or if he is giving Steele consideration. But if Frank wanted to hire Steele, I'd be fine with that. Not that Frank cares what I think.
