Florence is where I-95 and I-20 meet and thus has a large amount of hotel rooms and places to eat for a town its size. Also for women's basketball they really don't pick the locations for people to vacation in. I mean they put games in Sioux Falls...

Some people from up north are miffed...

Quote:
The NCAA, in its release of the more than 600 championship sites, noted it included North Carolina cities only after its board of governors voted to allow us back in. They let us back in, but you wonít hear a lot of celebrating.

That seems inappropriate considering what it took to get us back in.

And donít think this didnít cost. Yes, weíre in the rotation again. But so is South Carolina. If youíre keeping score at home, and here in North Carolina we all keep score at home, the Tarheel State will share postseason glory with the Palmetto State for some time to come.
Tournaments in nc return with a cost

The NCAA isn't looking for a town that small though. In SC it will always be hosted in either Greenville, Columbia, or Charleston.

And hardly anyone traveled there. I was there, but very few others.

I doubt it would be in Florence but its not totally out of the question either. As mentioned earlier Greenville and Charleston are your best bet. I could see even Myrtle Beach over Florence at this point, especially with them just doing the women's ACC tournament.

The roster isn't even finished getting put together yet and you're writing them off? This team will surprise you next year.

You'd be surprised at how many hotel rooms there are.

I'd be amazed if Florence has the hotel rooms for their normal traffic plus 10,000 additional rooms.

Even say that they do..... why would the state every put in a bid for arguably the 5th or 6th city in the state?

I think most would agree that the following are SC cities that would be better suited:
- Columbia
- Greenville
- Myrtle Beach
- Charleston
- Possibly even Hilton Head

Unless they converted the North Charleston Colosseum into a court sadly there isn't a place in Charleston capable of handling an NCAA Tournament game. C of C has the nicest arena in the area but it's too small since it only seats a little over 5,000. I would highly recommend catching a C of C game down there if you're ever visiting Charleston during the season, doesn't hurt that they sell beer in the arena. Unless Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach convert a non-basketball arena to hold a tournament game they're in the same boat.

If we're talking about the USC women hosting the first two rounds in Florence in 2019 , I think that would be just fine . Attendance for USC vs Arizona State was 8276 , and probably a lot of those were from the Columbia area . Some would probably make it a day trip . I would think Florence would have plenty of hotel rooms for those spending the weekend .
A women's regional , I think , would be a different story although the arena would be big enough . The NCAA has different requirements for the regionals .

The North Charleston Coliseum just hosted the CAA Men's Basketball tournament this year and will next year I believe.

Oh nice. I had tunnel vision down the stretch on USC basketball. If I had realized I would have tried to catch a few games, especially if they sold beer.

You're right. They don't. The Civic Center says the area has about 5,000 hotel rooms.

This was pretty much my thoughts exactly. If it was just for the first two rounds I think it would be an ideal location as it is close enough to Columbia to make it a day trip to see the team play. I will have to email the city but with all of the new hotels that have been built in just the last two years alone I believe there has to be WAY more than only 5k rooms.

That dude is a giant douche. We would have earned a bid at some point without the bathroom bill in NC. He seems to have a real distaste for our state.

I'm on the east side of Columbia so it would be better for me . One thing, the NCAA does have some requirements for where the teams are housed . They want things like room service , meeting rooms , etc. Does Florence have any of the Sheraton or Hilton type hotels ? The NCAA prefers no more than one team in a hotel , but I'm told you can get a waiver to put two teams in the same hotel .

I really wish Greenville would have gotten the 2019 Men's first two rounds. That year we could have one of our stronger teams. Hope it doesn't come back to bite us in the ass.
