TBH, I think Frank stays in Columbia a long time. He has a lot vested in our program.

I thought at the time he was a great hire, but I didn't realize he was responsible for Bowen.

Anyone know what we pay Martin's assistants?

According to The State that's the case, here a quote regarding Chuck Martin on getting Bowen.
"No. 2: Chuck Martin, the first-year South Carolina assistant coach who joined Frank Martin’s staff over the summer after a three-year stint at Indiana.

“And then the advantage that we had on our staff is Chuck Martin recruited him at Indiana,” Frank Martin said, “so there was a relationship there with him and the young man and the family, which allowed us to have a little background as to who they are as people.”

Bowen, a 6-foot-7 small forward, played his first two seasons of high school basketball in Saginaw, Michigan, before transferring to La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana. The Hoosiers were one of 28 programs to offer Bowen in high school, according to Rivals.

Chuck Martin became available to the Gamecocks after former IU coach Tom Crean was fired in March. Chuck Martin was instrumental in the recruitment of USC freshman Justin Minaya, a starting forward who’s fourth on the team in scoring (8.6 points per game)."

I’ve seen some compare him to David Beatty, which I hope is not accurate. Beatty has been extremely disappointing this year and I am very unimpressed with Beatty’s game.

Me too. Guards who can't make shots don't leave a favorable impression.

Think that's a little harsh on Beaty - he's a freshman guard under Frank Martin. His wheels are spinning 1000 mph when he plays trying to do what Frank' demands. When the game slows down for Beaty he will be a good player.

Agreed, I think he's still making some Freshman mistakes and the lack of a true PG has increased what is expected of him. We have seen glimpses of what he can do. Only time will tell.

That may be true. But it also means that, for most of the freshmen Frank recruits, they won't be productive as freshmen. It means most freshmen cannot be counted on in games to be productive players. And, it means that playing them in games will be more of a liability than an asset, and makes it harder to win games. The answer would seem to be don't play freshmen like Beatty and Doumbia. I don't think it will happen, but making freshmen ineligible would be good for the USC program.

Comparing him to Beatty is not accurate. Beatty struggled to make outside shots in high school.I'm not at all surprised at his poor perimeter shooting.
Couisnard is a good perimeter shooter can be a little streaky shooter at times. He compares more with Duane Notice a good shooter, good defender and a littler taller.

I feel the same way. We just didn't have any depth at the guard position this year, or I think he would have had a Red shirt year.

That's correct most freshman don't come in and set the world on fire under Frank. Beaty was playing so much last game because of necessity not because he's the best option. A few things happened that put guard play behind the 8 ball this yesr.
1. Dozier left early
2. Felder not on the team anymore due to his off the court issues
3. Injuries to Holden
4. Hassani didn't take a big jump from year 1 to year 2.
5. Recruiting misses on some guards (woods) and others so we had brought in grad transfers like Meyers who don't know the system but have experience.

Beaty will be better with time...

Interesting. I looked up his clips on YouTube and the way he drives to the hoop was reminiscent of Thornwell. Not quite as polished at finishing the drive the way Sin was, but had some nice moves and the ability to draw fouls. Granted, this was just a highlight clip and before his postgrad year at Montverde, so it's tough to tell.
