I will repeat, we don't have to have a lot of in-state recruits. Frank is winning anyway.

That tells you all you need to know about how in-state recruits view or program.

Frank better get on it and figure out a way to do what Spurrier did when he arrived and lock down the top talent in the state.

There are better sports programs out of state. The top talent in every discipline leaves South Carolina, from law to engineering to medicine. They only ever come back to retire and play golf. All three neighboring states have better colleges and jobs. That’s the way it will be until we abandon the good ol boy system in government/leadership positions.

Last time I checked, we only neighbor 2 states.

Keeping kids in state is tough when you're competing against the premier programs in college basketball. Kids are always going to be attracted to programs with bigger fanbases, better team support, and a history of preparing elite recruits for a potential NBA career. There's so much money behind Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, etc.

Who can really blame Zion for going to Duke? Seventh Woods hasn't lived up to the hype so far, but I can't knock him for going to North Carolina. These are schools kids dream of playing for. Never say never, because South Carolina's women's program has become a staple in college basketball. But, the road for the Men to achieve something similar is pretty steep to say the least.

This is a good point as well. Frank has never operated on getting the highest ranked recruits each year. The highest rated recruit Frank ever had was Michael Beasley as a 5-star, but Beasley was originally a Huggins recruit. Frank is one of the best coaches in the nation in terms of maximizing what he has.

Basketball is no different than footballl. The bulk of our games are played in the same territory as football games. Family would get the opportunity to see their kid play almost 20!times at home alone.

Try to explain it away all you want, but if we can’t compete for our own in-state talent we’ll never have consistent success. Never.
We’ve had a crappy program for over 30 years and the taters aren’t any better. Why should good players stay. If we keep winning, they’ll stay.

I think this is a stretch, especially jobs. When it comes to income (both per capita and median), South Carolina is barely below our “two” neighbors, NC and Georgia. All three are in the mid-30 to 40 range. But the other two states have higher unemployment than South Carolina. Those are hard numbers and not opinions. As for opinion, I don’t think our “good ol boy system” is any stronger than the two other states’. As for basketball, I don’t see the best players from SC flocking to Georgia. Actually, I don’t even think Duke has killed us in that regard. UNC has but it’s due to its winning tradition. Players go there because of that. We need a consistent winner to change that.

The three neighboring states are Georgia, North Carolina and Pickens County. No one knows where Clemson is anyway, so we just forced them to secede.

I actually think the 3rd "neighboring" state that is referenced is Florida, although you do have a stretch of the Georgia coast in between. NC, GA, and FL are all larger geographically, larger in terms of population, have more football talent and better paying jobs. NC does not produce a lot more football talent, but are a real problem for our in-state hoopsters because of Duke and UNC.

But we are growing rapidly, bringing in industry/better-paying jobs, have a great place to live and visit (Chucktown still #1 tourist destination),and have major cities close by (Charlotte is just over the border, Augusta and Savannah are on the border, ATL is not too much further and neither is JAX).

With our facilities, coaches and support, there is no reason that we cannot be competitive across the board - and we are rapidly headed in that direction. Even if we do not keep all of the top basketball talent in-state.

And we have even started cleaning up the good ole boy network a little bit.

Frank is an incredible coach. If they don’t want to come here, it’s their loss. Playing for Martin would make you a better defensive player, which would be a huge advantage in professional basketball. Why you wouldn’t want to play here is beyond me? Go Gamecocks.

I won't say plenty of kids want to play here but I'll say enough want to. And as long as Frank keeps squeezing blood from stones and winning, the talent level of the kids that want to come play here will continue to rise until we won't be having this conversation. Might take some time.

We’re going to get 2 of the 5 best BB players in the state of SC for the 2019 class.

Normally, that would not be a big deal. But 2019 is an exceptional class and getting two means a talent upgrade and continuing our upward trajectory.

I will be interested to see how Malcolm Wilson develops. Right now, he is a strictly a rebounder and shot blocker. But he might be good enough at those two things to be worth a scholarship.

This. You can't undo almost 40 years in 5 years. But it is already starting to change. We just have to keep winning.
