Default 2018 Offense

OK, it's basically the dead season and we have a long time before we see actual results on the field to talk about.

This season our offense finished 99th (24.2) in scoring offense and 109th (337) in yards gained per game.

Our new OC is being received with many mixed reviews, but what does his offense need to do for it to be considered a successful first season? Notice I said successful (as in some decent improvement) and not great/elite/etc.

Default Re: 2018 Offense

I'd say up the ppg and have a half way decent run game.

As a note, I am only talking offensive production here. Special teams production is excluded.

I said it in the other thread, I'd like to see a 30 ppg average. I would also like to see us blow out teams we should like say ummmm Coastal. No offense to them, but our guys should be able to win that game on talent alone, the other benefits should just be icing on the cake. Not going to happen, but I'd like to see us lay 50 or more on them.

I'd like to see us go from over 100th in offensive production to around 75th? I think it would be considered progress doing that. I'd like to see BMac being really comfortable by around game 3-4 in play calling(really in game 1, but is that a realistic expectation?). Lastly, I'd like to see it reflected in the W/L columns with at least a 8 win season like this year(preferably more but I don't want to see regression).

If we throw QB coach into this, I want to see Jake start to reach his potential. He obviously regressed from Freshman to Sophmore. I want to see that trend turned around.

I understand what you are saying about ST being 3xcluded, but the reality is that these stats are calculated using all points scored, whether on ST's, Offense or Defense.

I would also love to see a much improved run game. Until our offensive line is more talented and deeper, I'm not sure how much improvement we will see though. We do have some solid recruits coming in, but them being true freshman and there still won't be a ton of quality depth IMO.

I mentioned this in another thread, but if McClendon can have the offense averaging 28 ppg, that's nearly 7 more than this year's squad in the regular season when the non-offensive touchdowns are taken out of the equation.

According to this site we averaged almost 24 points a game. Where are you getting 21? Not being argumentative just unsure of the stat.

To me it isn’t just a points a game or ranking, it’s an O that makes plays in big games. When we play UGA Florida A&M and Clemson I want to see an O scoring 24-30 points in meaningful game action, not junk points. If we do that, then I think we’d all agree our O is finally where it needs to be.

I think we'll do better scoring wise - perhaps around 28-30 PPG - but that won't necessarily mean a lot of total yardage. I see us around 370 YPG. Our defense will help us have better field positioning, and hopefully our FG kicking improves next season too....

Good thread to talk about but the only thing that matters is whether we score more points than the other team at the end of the game.

The flaw in this poll is that the defense and special teams can also score points.

I subtracted the special teams and defensive touchdowns. I then divided by twelve.

I don't see that as a flaw at all. All teams that score any nonoffensive TD's have them counted in their scoring, but not total yards, category.

So comparing one year to the next or even one team to the next is still comparing apples to apples.

Like I said, I only calculated the points generated by the actual offense so the touchdowns scored by the special teams and defense weren't part of the equation. Furthermore, I used only the regular season games since Roper was over the offense at that time. That way there can be a direct comparison to what Roper's offense accomplished and what McClendon's offense will.

If we just don't suck, we will win a lot of games over time, maybe not next season but as muschamp continues to get the defense up to snuff.

If our offense scores 28 points/game we will win a lot of games. I don't think we will crack the top 50 in scoring offense. We play in a conference that is defense oriented.

1) Be able to convert with the running game on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1.

2) Be able to mix fast tempo and grinding clock, depending on the situation.

3) The OL needs to assert themselves. (See #1)

4) Avoid injuries. Our quality depth is ok at TE and RB, thin at WR, a bit thinner at QB, and very thin at OL. It doesn't matter who the OC is, he has to have the players to execute.

If those 4 things happen I think we'll be improved on offense. We may not average 50 ppg or 500 ypg, but we'll be improved. Just think how many drives could've been extended if we could simply convert a 3rd and 1. I'm optimistic we could improve 10-15 ppg just by doing the simple things successfully.

To improve 10 ppg would be monster improvement for 1 year, that would move us from 99th to 24th. The reality is a 7 ppg improvement would be a big success.

10 points is doable.

Score one more TD a game and kick another FG.

Can be done with lots of improvement. Especially at the FG kicker spot.

I agree it's possible, but to set that as the lowest bar for success would be setting that bar a bit high. An additional 7 ppg would move us into the top 50 of scoring offense, to go from 99 to 45th would be a huge move and definitely a success. Increasing our ppg by 10+ would mean to back up the Brinks truck to McClendon's house.

This season's passing yds/g was 214.9. I hope we can improve that by about 25% that us closer to teams that have the same or more completions that we do.

This season's rushing yds/g was 122.2. I hope we can improve that by about 40% to give us a competent and consistent run game. We average 3.9 yds a carry so just bump that up about .5 and rushes by about 5 per game.

The biggest things I want to see IN ORDER:

1) Score more than the opposition

2) Score touchdowns in the redzone

3) Get to third and short and convert a majority of 3rd downs

4) control time of possession
