Default Defensive improvement

I am amazed at the quick turnaround for our defense. The coaching staff has put a premium on turnovers and it shows in the numbers. Now that we have defensive lineman finding their groove (Wonnum and Kinlaw specifically), I hope we can make strides in TFLs and sacks. Improving those areas will help the other defensive categories as well. I am developing a serious man crush on this defense.

I was looking at this an hour ago.

Really impressive. I honestly think and hope the Sacks, TFL's and Total Defense moves in to top 20 next year.

What Boom and T-Rob have done is nothing short of amazing. I can't wait to see the defense after a couple more recruiting classes.

It's incredible. I expected to field a solid a defense, but having the turnaround with playing so many young and first time starters is a testament to their coaching ability.

If they keep this up, we're looking at a top 10 national defense in 2-3 years. If the offense can make some improvement......

In my opinion, they did this without much help from the offense in terms of keeping the ball, field position, and discouraging 4th down attempts. Moving forward next year will be tough considering the players we are losing on defense. I think we'll need more help from the offense to keep moving forward. I hope the next guys step up and the offense improves.

It helped having some seniors at key positions imo. I look for the defense to take a small step back, at least early on, while some of the new guys get broke in. But excited about where this defense is going

Possibly. However, the contribution from first year players like Williams, Sterling, Johnson, Nixon, and fennel along with known commodities like Montac, Kinlaw, Brunson, Wonnum, and BAW make me believe Boom has enough to work with to hold steady and possibly improve the defense.

We will be young at safety so I expect some growing pains but the ceiling is much higher with these guys imo. Also depends if Montac is a starter next year. Dickerson redshirting this year and getting to watch from the sidelines an extra year may be a blessing in disguise. If his advancement is faster then there might not be much of a dip. Safeties are a huge part of Muschamp's defense being successful

If Montac is a reserve next year that's a good sign IMO. we redshirted several DBs due to injury.

I agree. I think he may start the season at safety but will probably be more of a backup/nickel guy later on. The length in the secondary, minus Williams, is going to be pretty scary. Depending on how quick some of these guys grow up that defense could be downright lethal in the next year or 2

Definitely impressive what CWM and staff have done with this defense! I am a little concerned for next year though, as we do lose a bunch of talent, experience, and beef. We lose Sawyer, Stallworth, Moore, King, and Lammons. I would be pleasantly surprised if we're able to overcome that without missing a beat. However, if anyone can do it, Muschamp can.

I tend to agree, at least for the first half of the season.

3 starters on DLine gone, no Skai and key losses in the secondary.

Just looking ahead to the spring, the likely starters are

DE: Thomas, Sterling, Blackshear
DT: K. Smith, Thompson
DT: Kinlaw, Webb
DT: Wonnum, Fennell, Johnson
LB: BAW, Wilder
MLB: Brunson, Greene
SLB: Thompson
CB: Fenton
S: Montac, Dickerson
S: Nixon
CB: J. Williams

MJ Webb, Aaron Thompson, Davonne Bowen, Korey Banks, Tavyn Jackson and Zay Brown will need strong springs and summers, I have a feeling they will be counted on greatly next season.

Also, if Ricardo Louis is as advertised, won't be surprised if Greene slides to outside.

I feel like Nixon might stay at CB, he showed some real promise the last few games. Jackson and Horn should both see decent playing time at cb and depending on how ready he is I think Gipson will get some pt at safety. A lot of these guys will be cross-trained and get time at nickel and some relief/backup roles too. Excited to see what Zay Brown looks like

I suspect D Bowen will get playing time at one of the outside linebacker spots. He has a lot of speed and strength an may be above 225 by the summer. Though we are losing 3 good DB's, I'm most concerned about DT. Kinlaw is excellent, but it's a war in there. I think our speed at linebacker will be a real asset, but we will miss Skai's coverage skills no matter who is in there.

I like watching our defense play - much like it was under Ellis Johnson, but I think we will end up better than those teams. Unlike some, I don't think there will be a drop-off next year. I think we will be better.

Going into the Outback Bowl, announcers said we led the SEC with 25 takeaways. So it's no surprise we added five more in the bowl game, to make it 30 for the year. Impressive!

What do you mean a couple more recruiting classes? Did you not see all those young players playing this past season? This defense will be better next season. Mark that down.

Dude what are you talking about? What players are we losing on defense that we can't live without? I can name only two that will hurt, but can be replaced. Moore and Stallworth. Brunson will replace Moore (with BAW next to him), and Kinlaw will be better than Stallworth. Outside of those two, I can't think of a single player leaving that we don't have a better player stepping in. You don't have to believe me now, but mark it down. This defense will not only be better next season, but they will be markedly better. The numbers will look better. Their play will be stronger. We will improve in most categories.

This is the thing!!! Excellent point! I think the guys above are discounting this very fact. Our freshmen played BETTER than our seniors. Guys like DJ Wonnum, Keir Thomas and Brunson were as good if not better than most of the seniors, and they will be even better next season. They are now being coached by coaches who are so much better than those outgoing seniors were coached by for most of their careers. We also have a much better S&C program. This is a primarily defensive coaching staff. Most of the talent is on that side of the ball. And it will continue to show up next season as elite. Look at what Dickerson looked like before he got hurt. Look how good Montac was this year. Williams was a beast in so many games. Nixon came on strong late. Sterling with another year in this system is going to be a BEAST!!! And so will Kinlaw; Brunson; Wonnum; Johnson and Fennel. And let's not forget about Kobe Smith, MJ Webb and the return of BAW. The future is very bright for this defense. And if Werner is half as good as his record indicates, this offense should take a big step next season as well. This team could be heads and shoulders better next season that it was this season. As coach Boom said, "our arrow is pointed up!"
