Default Front 7

Muschamp said it well yesterday at the media day. We have 5 seniors starting in our front 7. They will just have to play well for us to have a good team. Plain and simple.

Yep. The season will depend on that front 7, being able to get consistent pressure on passing downs, and being nasty against the run. The secondary will be good enough, but not secondary can hold forever. The offense will score enough.

I'm going to feel really good if we come out the gate thumping NC State.

I'm not sure how we will generate a pass rush, but if Coach Boom can't make it happen no one can.

BTW, what's King's timetable on rehab from that broken arm in the Spring Game.

I believe he was lifting 2 weeks after the injury. He's put on around 10 lbs or so in the offseason. I can't wait to watch this D. Not saying the D will be world beaters, but I think we'll be much improved. I'm guessing top 40 type D which should be good for 8-9 wins with our offense. Go Gamecocks!!!

Wednesday, he was at Boom's house on lake Murray riding jet skis......so I'll venture a wild guess, he's probably doing OK.

A top 40 defense will look unlike anything we've eeen here in quite awhile.

Yeah, 10 pounds heavier should help. Hopefully he watched the Clemson game every day and will come out motivated and ready to make sure that never happens again.

I agree with a number of posters, if this defense can make even just a few stops a game and generate a few turn overs, the offense should be able to keep us in most of the games.

If this D can crack the top 40 and the offense is as explosive as we all seem to think it might be, then 8 wins is not out of the question.

With a top 40 D and offense that scores around 30 a game we should win a minimum of 8 games.

I think we have enough on our D line and Bucks to generate good pressure and stop the run. If nothing else we should have a good rotation to help keep our guys fresh.

Up front, I think we have some upgrades and will see some improvement as well. We lost English (buck) Lewis, Griffin, Lamin, and Whitlow. Lewis was solid, and Griffin contributed, but was inconsistent. English and Lewis had the tackles (108 between them) and sacks (10.5 with English getting 9 of those). Hate losing Taylor, but he didn't contribute. I think we see the middle anchored by Jones and Stallworth, who both can play and push the pocket. K Smith and Thompson should back them up, but with some dropoff. I'm guessing Webb will be the other backup. Then there's Kinlaw. I doubt he can beat out Jones or Stallworth, but hope he can compete for playing time. He's likely an upgrade from Griffin and Lamin, pretty quick for his size. On the outside, I doubt we see much dropoff at Buck from English to Wonnum, who had good production for his time last season. His backups are good athletes, Fennell and likely B Johnson - Johnson with excellent speed and good size. At the strong side, I think Sawyer will be better than last year , both from health and experience. K Thomas may shine having moved outside. He had to play too heavy last year moving inside out of necessity. He and Sawyer may both give us edge sealing and a pass rush from the strong side. Blackshear is an unknown with potential to rush from either side. If the recovery is there, he could be a big upgrade on either side.
At the second level, we are thin. Getting Moore back can be a big upgrade in production and leadership. His football savvy and skill will help boost the run defense - he's side to side and on the ball. His opportunism in coverage steps the whole middle level up. BAW should be at his best yet, and if his mistakes are minimized, he will be notably good. Walton is our big loss at LB (68 tackles). If Brunson can handle the middle spot, Moore can stay outside, and we should defend the run much better. Behind these guys, I think we've got a big drop-off, pretty much freshmen and walk-ons plus 190lb Wilder, a small safety in reality. Fortunately, the freshmen are really good ones with Bowen, Greene, and Staley. I hope we don't have to move Johnson or Fennell back there to fill-in. One injury could be a huge problem - and it happens often. The JC guy, Thompson is small like Wilder, though taller. We're just frighteningly thin, and that's my big worry.

If the front 7 can play just AVERAGE SEC defense we'll win 7-8 games.

I don't think you give the guys that played in this system last year enough credit for being in their second year. Yes we are thin at LB, but Johnson can play LB in our hybrid defense. I do think both Greene and Bowen will play meaningful snaps and will get better as the season wears on. But Moore, BAW and Brunson will definitely be better than the 3 starters last year. And our safeties this year will be much better than last year. Plus we can play a lot of 4-2-5.

I am very curious to see how Skai has recovered from injury. The coaches seem positive right now on that (and of course they would be) but I want to see for myself what he can do. He led the team in '15 with 110 tackles, and for reference: our leader last year (DJ Smith) had 80. So, while Skai certainly stands out for his ability to grab a timely interception or two, it's important to keep in mind as well that he was an absolute tackling machine before his injury.

If he does come back at full strength, it might be a fun season.

I've watched Skai Moore intently since he started here. His diagnosing and sideline-to-sideline play are just outstanding. His size was an early concern, but he has shown it doesn't limit him much at all. One thing I noticed early-on, Moore is maybe the best arm-tackler I've ever seen. His hands and forearms must be very strong, and he knows how to use leverage and technique to bring a runner up short without a heavy blow. We've seen hitters who pop but don't bring ball carriers down and all know the need to wrap and use good technique. Year before last, just when I thought he never did it, I saw him deliver a head-on hit, wrap, and dump on one of the top power runners in the conference. I believe he got the spy assignment on another running QB and frustrated him the whole game. I think his technique and smarts may enable him to be highly effective (100 tackles maybe) without getting banged-up much. That's my hope. I hope we don't have to use him in the middle very much.

I just read Muschamp's recent comments about Skai Moore. I thought he must be strong, but Muschamp seems to think he's the strongest player on the team pound for pound. I don't know what power-cleaning 330 means, but I know it involves explosive strength.

There seems to be a lot of talk about Skai and how he is feeling lately or is he up to the same form that he was before the surgery. Ok, let me clear the air, the injury to his neck wasn't something that just popped up, he probably played years with that discomfort, and yes that is all that it was to him, and he still led the team in tackles his first three years. Keep in mind, this year, there will be NO discomfort...let that sink in for a minute. There seems to be a lot of talk also about his weight or lack of weight. Skai carries no body fat on his frame and never has, he is as strong as they come and just as many have said, pound for pound, he might be the strongest on the team. If he did put on some FAT..he would possibly be slower but would those few extra pounds really make that big of a difference in play, he is an athlete, and a gifted one at that. He will be fine this year, he has more motivation than anyone else on the team. He is in his senior year, out the door, he wants a Championship very badly. He also wants to lead the team in tackles for his fourth year as a player. He also wants the record for the most interceptions in a career here at SC. So think about who you are releasing onto the field again....staying and not going into the draft a year ago after his junior season, then sitting out an entire season due to an injury and watching that defense play for an entire season like they did without him. You have the championships, records and achievements dangling in front of him, and throw in what the experts are saying about HIS Defense/Team and (also let's not forget how the media tried to paint him as a violent athlete in a bar fight against a war vet) you have the ingredients for an explosion. SC fans, just wait, the match has been struck...and all the doubters placed it on the fuse

Lots of speculation there.

When a lot of guys get hurt badly and need surgery, they not only have to recover physically...they need to recover mentally, trust their body and not be tentative.

I'm really going to be watching him close in that first game...hopefully he's totally healthy.
